Daily devotional: Roses

If there is a world day of roses, it will surely be February 14. Valentine’s after all, is just so kind to this lovely species of flower that gladdens any woman’s heart. Be it given as a bouquet, one-piece long stemmed, or as a meaningful three-piece set, it is surely welcomed with gratefulness, and even romantic love.

The problem though is when we women start to see flowers as a sign of approval. A sign of love. A sign that we are adored and beautiful. It could make even the loveliest-looking woman feel unattractive, even unworthy of love and attention.

But as followers of Jesus, this should not be the case for us. Whether we receive a bouquet of flowers, a one-piece plastic one, or none at all, we should not feel unworthy because we are made in the image of God, and we are loved by Him as His children.

“I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” Psalm 139:14

When we know that we are pleasing to God, we will no longer aim to please fellow mortals. Be it the opposite sex, or fellow women, we will no longer live for the fleeting joys of receiving roses, and hearing the ooohs and ahhhhs of friends who see our posts or witness us receiving the gift. Instead, we will be more concerned about ensuring that our Maker looks on happily to us, and that we do what pleases Him.

“For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.” Galatians 1:10

When we put Christ at the front and center of our lives, we will no longer feel sad about trivial things. We will no longer feel depressed over what most people value. This is not because we are better than them, but because we know what truly matters. And what truly matters is nurturing a relationship with our Creator, our maker, our eternal bridegroom who loves us beyond measure.

“Because you are precious in my eyes, and honored, and I love you, I give men in return for you, peoplesin exchange for your life.” Isaiah 43:4

When we focus our energies on living our lives for the Lord, we will no longer be affected by worldly cares. We can do our jobs happily, serve other people in such a way that will glorify God, and will go about our lives enjoying the abundant life that Jesus offers.

“You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you.” John 15:16

Our worth will no longer be anchored on the likes and hearts that we receive, nor the amount of flowers and gifts we receive. We no longer have to prove to anyone that we are happy and living a good life because we know what and who truly matters.

Our worth will be in how the Lord sees us. And nurturing a relationship with a faithful, generous, merciful, and promise-keeping God is worth all our energy, after all we are created to worship Him.

“For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 8:38-39

Thank you for reading through our devotional today. I invite you to
ponder on Psalm 139 to dig deeper on today’s topic.

Reflection Question: Are there things that make you feel unworthy and unloved? What might a close relationship with our Savior help you know what truly matters?

Conversation with the Lord: Lord Jesus Christ, thank you for assuring me of my place in your heart. For instilling me a deep sense of security and contentment in just being by your feet. Thank you for loving me and calling me to your embrace. Amen.
