Whenever we pray to seek guidance, and await God’s response, may we remember that He may not choose to guide us in the way we expect it. He may not always give us the “sign” that we ask for. Instead, He can choose another way to direct our paths.
Moses’ successor Joshua, needed God’s guidance and encouragement on leading the Israelites into the final leg of their journey to the Promised Land. While Moses tried His best to prepare Joshua to take his place before he died, the Lord’s personal commissioning of Joshua gave him the guidance, strength and encouragement to lead God’s people.
“This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.” Joshua 1:8
Like Joshua, we, present-day believers can also receive guidance from the Lord through His word. We can get hold of it by reading the Bible during our daily personal time with God and hearing His word in church and during group Bible study activities.
“Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” Psalm 119:105
We can also receive guidance during our personal prayer time. Whenever we pray, we get to reflect and realize that the best decisions that we can make are those which are aligned to God’s will.
Guidance can also come through the Holy Spirit as promised to us by Jesus. When we abide in the Lord and do as He says, the Holy Spirit will lead us and even help us endure challenges that come our way.
“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and remind you of all that I said to you.” John 14:26
Sometimes, God gives us guidance through Godly elders and leaders, and even God-honoring people in our lives. We must be careful to discern though whom to accept counsel from because it is a weird world, and so it is important that we have strong ties with our church mates as they are the one we will journey through life.
“Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.” James 5:16
More importantly, we can look up to Jesus and the life He lived as a way to guide the choices that we make. When pressed to make a decision, we can ask ourselves, “what would Jesus do if He were in my place?” And as we seek God’s guidance and truth, we get to honor God with our lives. After all, when we truly follow Jesus and His ways, when we choose to please God with our day-to-day choices and in the life-altering decisions that we make, we will get to live the abundant life that He has promised.
“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” John 10:10
So whenever we are at a loss as to how to decide on a life choice, let us not run to social media, a chatbot, or to just about anyone for help. We should first ask God, because He will be more than happy to guide us throughout our whole life.
“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” James 1:5
