Daily Devotional: The Unbusy

God did not call us to be busy, He calls us to be fruitful. Let us then level up our days from just existing and surviving to truly living and thriving. Let us examine if our pursuits are pleasing to God and if these pursuits bring peace to our hearts and minds.

Ecclesiastes 2:26

“I denied myself nothing my eyes desired; I refused my heart no pleasure. My heart took delight in all my labor, and this was the reward for all my toil. Yet when I surveyed all that my hands had done and what I had toiled to achieve, everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind; nothing was gained under the sun.” Ecclesiastes 2:10-11

Reassessing our priorities, and re-aligning them to God’s will, would help us live out the best plans our Creator has in store for us. And as we grow in our faith through intentional and regular Bible reading,
prayer, and reflection, we will be able to better discern God’s will for our lives. We will know that God does not want us to lead hurried and frantic lives, instead we are to live a meaningful life that is
both honourable and truly worth living.

“What do people get for all the toil and anxious striving with which they labor under the sun? All their days their work is grief and pain; even at night their minds do not rest. This too is meaningless.”
Ecclesiastes 2:22-23

And while being unbusy may not be stressful, it does not mean we will no longer pursue goals and just be content with mediocrity. We are still called to excellence, but our goals should be recalibrated and
should not drive us to an excessive desire to possess temporal things that provide us a false sense of security. We should not fall into the trap of working too hard to either impress others, or to support a
worldly lifestyle that we forget God and totally ignore those who truly matter to us.

“But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction.” 1 Timothy 6:9

What God truly wants for us is to live each day with His joy and peace in our hearts. That we are truly assured that in spite of the challenges that we face, we have a God whom we can truly rely on. A
God who gives us hope, healing, and mercy.

“But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.” Matthew 6:33-34

Thank you for reading through our devotional today. I invite you to ponder on Ecclesiastes 2:17-26 to dig deeper on today’s topic.

Reflection Question: Are you too busy to have peace in your life? Are you just existing and surviving instead of truly living and thriving?

Conversation with the Lord: Heavenly Father, thank you for loving us enough to call us to a life of being occupied only by the things that truly matter. Forgive us for the times we are too busy for the wrong
reasons that we fail to see your will in our lives. Thank you for not growing tired of calling us back to you. Amen.
