Daily devotional: Tears in a Bottle

Whenever we feel like life is beating us down, let’s remember that God does not waste our tears. Whatever the Lord allows to happen in our lives, will in the end be for our greater good. It may be to hone our character, deepen our faith, increase our capacity to forgive and be more like Him, or to prepare us to steward a bigger blessing. Whatever it may mean, may we continue to hold on to our faith in Jesus.

John 16:20
John 16:20

Truly, truly, I say to you, you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy.” John 16:20

Throughout the Bible, God has been recorded as seeing the tears and hearing the cries of His people, and He responds to them. He heals them, He vindicates them, He protects them, and supplies what they need. As they seek Him in prayer and in repentance, He responds in His own good time.

One of the most emotional examples was the healing of King Hezekiah. He had fallen ill and was at the point of death and was told that he will no longer recover. He cried to God  for help. The answer came to Him through the Prophet Isaiah.

“Now, O Lord, please remember how I have walked before you in faithfulness and with a whole heart, and have done what is good in your sight.” And Hezekiah wept bitterly. And before Isaiah had gone out of the middle court, the word of the Lord came to him:“Turn back, and say to Hezekiah the leader of my people, Thus says the Lord, the God of David your father: I have heard your prayer; I have seen your tears. Behold, I will heal you.” 2 Kings 20:3-5

And as present-day followers of Jesus, we serve the same God. Our Messiah, Lord Jesus Christ, shows compassion to every one of us, brings healing, and brings comfort. Ultimately, none of our tears are cried for nothing.

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God” 2 Corinthians 1:3-4

And as we dry up our tears, and comfort those who are going through the same suffering we have gone through, we can look forward to the Lord’s promise: that time will come when we will cry no more, and grieve no more.

“He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” Revelation 21:4

Thank you for reading through our devotional today. I invite you to ponder on 2 Kings 20:1-7 and John 20:16-24 to dig deeper on today’s topic.

Reflection Question: When was the last time you shed a tear, and felt God’s comfort? How can you pass on the same comfort to others who may be going through the same difficu;lty you have experienced?

Conversation with the Lord: Heavenly Father, thank you for responding to our cries, our pleas for help. We love you, and may you continue to give us the confidence to call on you in both good times and bad times. Amen.
