Daily devotional: Rough Sailing

Parenting during the roughest, dimmest seasons of our life could be very challenging. But taking care of ourselves is one of the best things that we can do for our children during these times.

We must remember that we cannot be everything to our children because we already have Jesus for that. His grace is more than enough to cover all the gaps, empty spaces, and zero energy areas in our lives as we experience grief.

Isaiah 41:10
Isaiah 41:10

“Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” Isaiah 41:10

With our lives fully anchored to the Lord we can be sure that we can survive our rough season. Holding on to His promises, and looking back to His past deliverance should strengthen our resolve to not give up and stay strong for the children He has entrusted us to raise.

“But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.” Isaiah 40:31

And so let us give ourselves the grace to be tired, to feel our raw emotions, to rest and to be nourished. Let us give ourselves the permission to reach out for comfort and convenience from time to time.

Not everything has to be picture perfect. Plans may be postponed, and projects may wait. God’s peace in our homes and our souls is paramount. And so seeking Him and spending time with our children, and just loving them, is enough until we feel strong enough once again.

Thank you for reading through our devotional today. I invite you to ponder on Matthew 11:28-30 and Psalm 34:17-20 to dig deeper on today’s topic.

Reflection Question: How do you manage to parent your children during your own rough seasons? How has God come through for you and supported you during these times?

Conversation with the Lord: Lord Jesus Christ, thank you for assuring us that your grace is sufficient to cover our weak spots and parenting gaps in our weakest moments. Thank you as well for embracing us through it all. Give us the confidence to continue holding on to you, Lord. Amen.
