When a person is injured due to someone else’s negligence – be it an accident case, a defective product case, or medical malpractice, it becomes a case of personal injury. And child personal injury cases are more complex as a minor can’t fight their case on their own or file a lawsuit.

Many times newborn babies suffer due to misuse of vacuum pumps or other medical equipment that are used at the time of pregnancy. Hence, it is imperative for parents to know how to deal with such situations.

In such cases, a person or a team is legally responsible for the injuries. If your child has suffered severe injuries which cost you a heavy amount of money, you can apply for a monetary claim from the defendant’s party. But for that, you will have to prove that the other party is at fault. Here we have discussed the steps you need to get your child’s personal injury claim.

Hire a Personal Injury Lawyer

Any personal injury case can get complex, but there are unique challenges with seeking a claim on behalf of a minor. Since a child case can be tricky and requires careful legal attention, parents should reach out to a personal injury attorney for help.

A lawyer is the best person to help you evaluate your child’s case and see if you are eligible for compensation. Moreover, personal injury cases always get difficult when it’s about calculating the estimated claim and convincing the defendant party.

A lawyer can help judge both sides, evaluate the child’s injuries and their long-term effects, and quote a genuine claim which is backed by facts and evidence.

Prove that the Other Party Is at Fault

Most child injury cases are due to the other party’s negligence, yet sometimes it can be grueling for the parents to prove the negligence. Moreover, you need to prove that the defendant owed a duty to your child and bring evidence to demonstrate that they failed to comply with their duty. Again, here your lawyer will help represent the evidence on your behalf.

Depending on your particular case, you also need to identify what kind of duty the other party owed to your child. For instance, if your child suffered due to medical malpractice, you need to prove that the healthcare providers didn’t act with reasonable care while attending to the child or failed to comply with their duties.

Speaking from the legal perspective, the child’s representative must prove the following terms in order to hold the other party liable:

  • Duty of Care: The defendant had a duty of care to not harm the child in the given condition.
  • Breach of Duty: The defendant breached their duty by doing something wrong, which a reasonable person should not have done in the same situation.
  • Causation: The defendant’s breach of duty and care is what caused injuries to the child.
  • Damages: You have medical bills and records to prove your child’s injuries.

Understand the Limitations of Your Case

Depending on the state you’re filing the case in, there will be certain limitations related to your child injury case. There are different statutes for different claim requests in different states, which an injury lawyer can help you guide about.

For instance, the statute of limitations for child injury cases in Florida is usually four years from the injury date, whereas, in Oakland, the child’s representative gets only two years after the accident to file the claim. Because child injury cases are more complex, complying carefully with the statute of limitations is imperative. Any misguidance in such cases can result in the dismissal of the lawsuit.

File a Claim Representing Your Child

Since an injured child cannot fight for their claim on their own, parents or legal guardians have the right to apply for the claim as their legal representative. In many states, they are known as the ‘next friend’ who is appointed by the court to protect the rights of the minor.

A next friend could be one parent, both the parents, a legal guardian, or a court-appointed lawyer. Moreover, depending on your local laws, you might also need to take the court’s approval to deem you as your child’s legal representative.

Once these claims are settled, and the victim gets the reimbursement, the fund can be secured as a trust for the child and can be used for their higher education. The amount of the claim will depend on the extent of damages suffered by the victim.

Cloth diapers are good for the skin and best for the environment!

Despite taking some major steps towards a greener, more carbon-neutral environment, the human population still has a way to go before reaching its sustainability goals. It’s much easier to change outdated lifestyle habits when you do it as a team, which is why it’s so important for families to work together when it comes to helping the environment.

Reducing Landfill Waste

In 2022, as much as 85% of textiles end up in landfills. A clothes swap with other families can help to reduce that percentage. Kids grow up so quickly and often outgrow their clothes after just a few wears. Hosting a community clothes exchange (all washed and cleaned of course) can not only help diminish the negative environmental impact of wasted textiles but can also save you and your community some money.

Composting is another fun, immersive, and highly effective way to reduce food waste. Get the kids involved in a home garden composting project, and either palm off the result to local gardeners or use it in your backyard for a family food-growing project.

Switching From Disposable To Reusable Home Supplies

It’s hard to escape the grip that disposable goods have on society. However, there are ways to work around it. One of them is switching to reusable goods where.

Cloth diapers, for example, are a very effective and sustainable alternative to disposable ones. These sustainable fabric diapers can be bought in packs of 10-25, and are softer on sensitive skin than their plastic counterparts.

But if you don’t have any young children in need of potty training, there are other ways you can help. Toothbrushes, shopping bags, aluminum cans, and tires are some of the most commonly found objects in landfills, and yet they all have eco-friendly, sustainable alternatives.

Drive Less, Walk And Cycle More

The accumulation of greenhouse gasses is one of the biggest threats currently facing the planet. If you want your family to do more for the environment, this is one major way to make an impact. Opting to use your car less in favor of walking, cycling (or even skateboarding) can significantly reduce your family’s carbon footprint – and promote physical health at the same time.

These adjustments may require some patience, but you can take comfort in knowing how your actions are positively affecting the planet. Plus, your kids will be raised to understand the importance of sustainable living. It’s a win-win!

Thanks so much for stopping by! Till Next Post!

Do not let his tummy ache prevent him from enjoying the day.

Tummy aches are a common occurrence among children, and they are usually not a cause for concern. The pain mostly comes from constipation, gas, indigestion, or a stomach bug. Unless your child is suffering from severe pain or the discomfort is accompanied by high fever and excessive vomiting or diarrhea, their sakit sa tyan or stomach ache is most likely harmless and does not require a visit to your pediatrician.

Mild abdominal pain often goes away after resting for some time. Nonetheless, you may want to speed up the recovery process so that your little one can go back to playing and laughing. Here are several home remedies for bellyaches that you can try to help your child feel better:

Warm Compress

One of the safest and most soothing home remedies you can try to relieve your kid’s tummy ache is by applying a warm compress on the belly area. The heat will help relax the abdominal muscles and increase blood flow, thereby providing quick and calming relief.

You can use a heating pad or make a warm compress using uncooked rice and a clean, long sock. Just fill the foot part of the sock with rice, then tie the top to secure it. Place the sock in the microwave for 30 seconds or so to warm it up. Whether you use a heating pad or a homemade compress, make sure that your child can handle the heat to prevent paso or burns.

Engage in Physical Activities

Constipation is a common cause of abdominal pain among children, especially if they do not get enough water and fiber in their diet or tend to resist the urge to go to the toilet. If your precious one is suffering from constipation, it is best to bring them outdoors so that they can play and keep moving instead of lying down.

Besides taking their mind off the pain, physical activities can help with the movement of food in the gastro intestinal tract. Just make sure that they do not engage in “tummy twirling” activities that could intensify their discomfort, such as tumbling or hanging on monkey bars.

Yogurt

If your toddler can already eat solid foods, you may want to let them snack on yogurt since it is known to help alleviate basic stomach pains. Yogurt, like other probiotic foods, is packed with good bacteria that support a healthy gut. Try mixing slices of bananas in the yogurt to make it tastier. Besides being rich in potassium, bananas are also easily digestible and known to relieve indigestion and bellyache.

Ginger Tea

Ginger is one of nature’s most effective remedies for an upset stomach and digestive cramping. This root vegetable hastens the passing of food through the gastrointestinal tract and reduces gas and bloating. Although ginger is undoubtedly safe for children, its slightly spicy flavor may not sit well with your little one. To make it more palatable, you may want to add lemon and honey to the tea.

Preparing ginger tea or salabat is easy. You need about a teaspoon of chopped fresh ginger, a cup of water, two slices of lemon, and honey to taste. Just mix the first three ingredients in a pot and boil for about 5 minutes. Turn the heat off and let the mixture steep for 10 minutes. Strain and add honey to sweeten.

If your child is less than a year old, use brown sugar instead of honey. Take note that honey or any processed foods containing honey are not recommended for babies younger than 12 months to prevent infant botulism.

Tummy Rub

Perhaps the easiest and safest home remedy to relieve stomach pain among children is an abdominal massage. A good belly rub supports healthy digestion, reduces gastric upset, and soothes the organs connected to the stomach and gastrointestinal tract. You may not realize it, but your mere touch has healing powers.

When the skin of your hands touches the skin of your baby’s tummy, their body responds by increasing serotonin, a neurotransmitter that helps alleviate pain and promote relaxation. Physical contact or touch also reduces cortisol or stress hormones.  As such, you should never discount the benefits of a gentle and loving massage.

To massage your child’s tummy, make a circular motion in a clockwise direction around the belly button area using your palms and fingers. Making repeated downward strokes from the chin to the lower part of the tummy may also help ease the discomfort.

While the home remedies discussed above have been proven safe and effective for most stomach aches, you should never let your guard down. If your child’s condition is not improving despite trying any of these methods, it is best to seek medical attention. You may also want to keep a diary of tummy aches with details of what they ate, the appearance of their stool, and the level of discomfort if your little one suffers from recurrent stomach pains. This information can significantly help your pediatrician in figuring out the issue and planning the best type of care.

Thank you for reading up mommies, hope your little one will feel better soon, and till next post!

Can babies and toddlers eat durian?

I grew up in a home that adores the taste of Durian. My parents believed that if you drank water from the pulp you would grow accustomed to the odor, would not mind it, and would be open enough to appreciate the sweet creaminess of this fruit. Now dont ask me where they got this notion or what age i started eating it but what is important is i got to love it even as a little girl.

And while my dad only goes to Davao a couple of times a year for work, he makes sure that everytime he goes home he would have a boxful of durian fruit as pasalubong. Yes, with the rind and all. Kabog ang lamp bergier ng sinaunang titas of manila aka my mom. Hahaha.

Anyway, i was suddenly transported to my durian loving childhood days when my graciosa next door neighbor chimed in to give us this baby:

Ahahahay! Pasalubong pa more. 😍😍😍 my Davaoena next door neighbor came by to drop off this durian and we are so thrilled! It is rich, sweet and super creamy! Kabait ng aking kapitbahay, napa pledge ako na iwan nya bunso nya dito sa amin if magpa salon siya 😂😂😂😂

Durian for babies?

So as soon as the neighbor left, we “butchered” the durian and I am just happy that at least one of my children loves it too! Kilala nyo na siguro kung sino? Si Shobe of course. I need not make her deink water out of the pulp. I credit baby led weaning for her live for durian (i have a full section on baby led weaning so click here if youd like to know more — we also have a facebook album full of BLW meal ideas and recipes for babies and toddlers).

Going back to the topic, this method of introducing solid food has been so effective on shobs because she does not think twice about exploring food including fruits of whatever texture, like the durian. I remember she had her first taste of Durian when she was 10 months old. Someone gave us Durian and I froze a portion of it. The next day when I served shobe her breakfast of rolled oats, i added frozen durian bits so it could cool off asap because she was tooexcited to eat already! Haha she so enjoyed it.

Since Shobe consumed not much, i decided to ask our pedia if it is ok to feed her durian if it is available, and as always our pedia’s answer is “all fruits as long as in moderation.” So there, when it is available she gets to have it. Now she eats durian like a pro – tuwang tuwa pa pag maliliit ang buto 😄😄😄

Benefits of eating Durian

And while most would shun Durian because of the odor, it is actually very good for the body (as long as consumed in moderation and you do not have hypertension or blood sugar issues). It is rich in antioxidants, Vitamin C, and dietary fiber. There is really a reason why you should try it and go past the weird odor.

Anyway I hope this little blog post of mine has convinced you to give this fruit a try. Till next post!

Using cloth diapers in the Philippines has proven to be very beneficial to our babies, our budget and the environment.

First time to not write for a very long time. Forgive me my dear friends because life has been happily busy in the homefront, with the mister and the kids, and some of my frelance writing commitments. I have a lengthy list of articles for drafting, I eveb have drafts sitting for uploads and I am sorry I was not able to find time.

Anyway, it is no excuse and this 2019 ill endeavor to write more, learn more recipes and parenting hacks to share with you and plan more meals and create meal lists you and I can share.

Anyway, as you know one of my advocacies is cloth diapering, and I will continue to spread the word for as long as this blog exists. As you know, using cloth diapers in the Philippines has proven to be very beneficial to our babies, our budget and the environment.

Loving Cloth Diapers in the Philippines

Another year of cloth diapering is about to end, thanking cloth diapers for a lot of year end savings for my little familia. Diaper expenses could have been huge when you have two babies under two years old but thanks to hybrid fitteds, pockets, and AIOs and fitteds we survived with less expense and less trash! Add to that the savings of zero UTI bouts and less incidence of diaper rash then really it is a great ongoing journey.

I wasnt able to cloth diaper my eldest and she had three bouts of UTI before she turned two. My two younger kids never had it (knock on wood!) And their diaper rash occurrences are very minimal. All these despite my panganay’s disposable diapers not being cheap and we changed it every 3 hrs just like cloth.
.
For my younger two I just invested on about 65 – 70 cloth diapers which I accumulated over time since my middle child was born and about 70 pieces of cloth wipes so we wouldnt have to use disposable baby wipes. The system worked. We now are able to sell our newborn cloth diaper stash because hopefully little guy will be our last baby.

Is it difficult to cloth diaper in the Philippines?

If you ask me if it is hard to cloth diaper, yes it has a learning curve but once you get the hang of it it will be easy! I am a yaya-less mom of three young children, I freelance write on the side and I am still able to manage to cloth diaper my two younger kids. All you need is a good wash routine!

If you need more info on cloth diapering feel free to visit my blog’s cloth diapering section — happypinaymommy.com or follow our Pinterest cloth diapering board. We have info on how to start, where to buy and what you need to know — wash routine, detergents to use, drying during rainy days etc. You can DM me for questions too.

Till next post!

Our baby led weaning journey in the Philippines

Giving you a peek on our daily life as we continue to pursue our baby led weaning journey in the Philippines with our two younger children.

Baby led weaning journey in the Philippines

Be informed and closely supervise your baby or toddler as you wean them BLW-style.

Be informed and closely supervise your baby or toddler as you inteoduce solid food to them the BLW-style.

Magandang tanghalian po from the little guy! Breaded porkchop, apple slices and rice for our little familia’s Tuesday lunch.

My bunso is trying his best to be so independent so kahit feling ko dapat counted na as squats ang pagpupulot ko ng kanin at ulam na nahuhulog sa ilalim ng lamesa, go parin tayo sa pag BLW.

I know it is really bad to compare kids pero Shobe and little guy are more independent and not much of a picky eater compared to Achie who was weaned the traditional way (pureed food and spoon fed), and nasanay na iba food nya at hinahabol ko ng subo. Grabe ang stress ko talaga sa pagpapakain kay achie that time and as a first time mom, i tried my best to find ways to make food introduction to my second child Shobe better so she would have healthier eating habits.

Until i stumbled upon the concept of baby led weaning. If you have long been a reader of the website, you would see the food adventures of my younger two, and im just so happy I pursued BLW for both of them.

Shobe and little guy both know that when it is eating time, it is eating time and that they should try the food that is on their plate. Napakakalat man nila kumain, super fulfilling to see that they try their best to feed themselves, and actually eat what is on the table. Chamba man o hindi that BLW worked for these younger two, im just happy that I stuck with it amid the kalat and other kakulitan and kapagudan that come with it.

So there goes our BLW story. If you are interested to learn more about BLW plus samples and BLW meal ideas that are feasible in the Pinoy setting, doable on a daily basis (kahit ng yayaless mom of three na gaya ko), affordable and nutritious, please check out our pinoy BLW album over at Facebook with close to 200 baby and toddler food recipes and ideas.

Today, we are fortunate to be publishing a guest post on a concern shared by a growing number of moms: toddler speech development and corresponding therapy. Let me welcome again Mommy Micah, who has been one of our regular contributors. Mommy Micah shares with us in this post her experience in seeking toddler speech therapy for his son in this two-part series.

What You Must Know About Speech Therapy for Toddlers

By: Mommy Micah de Jesus

Every child has a different timeline. However, some parents may find a cause for concern when their child’s developmental milestone seems to be impeded as compared with other kids. And nowadays, one problem area that many encounter as early as the toddler stage is speech development.

Usually, by the time a child turns 2, he already knows 50 words, can string words to form short sentences, and his vocabulary increases as reflected by the new words he learns every month. However, this isn’t always the case–and as a mom, you have to know when it’s time to look at it as a problem that your child has to overcome.

How to Tell if Your Child has a Speech Development Problem

According to Liberty Gates, a speech pathologist, most parents will be guided by their instincts to know if their child has speech or language problems. “They may notice that their child is falling behind the others in playgroup, or having trouble communicating and understanding. These are usually reliable signs that a child could have a speech or language disorder,” she says.

In addition to that is the checklist that can help you tell when it’s time to seek the help of a speech pathologist. Professional help may be needed especially if your child is:

  • difficult to understand
  • perceived by people as younger because of how he speaks
  • frustrated with how he talks and may already be teased by others
  • only using fewer words than other children his age
  • stuttering when he speaks
  • exhibiting inappropriate interactions or unusual play
  • experiencing difficulties with reading or writing
  • diagnosed with a condition that could affect speech or language (hearing loss, auditory processing disorder, autism spectrum disorder or developmental delay)

Does screentime affect speech development?

A recent study suggests that screen time could be a factor why nowadays, more children are experiencing developmental problems.
Based on the research involving around 900 children from 6 months to 2 years old, those who spent more time using mobile devices were more prone to experience delays in expressive speech, compared to those who didn’t use mobile devices as much. It also suggests that for every 30 minutes of screen time, risk of expressive speech delay increases by 49%.

The Role of Speech Therapy in Your Child’s Development

While with little children, problem with speech development is hard to judge as pronunciation and usage of grammatically correct words is challenging and usually takes time, parents should be able to acknowledge when speech therapy is needed especially for children with difficulties. And this should take little convincing once you realize the benefits that can help you realize your developmental goals for your child, including:

1. Develop your child’s capability to express what he wants or needs.
2. Develop understanding for verbal and non-verbal communication that people commonly use.
3. Develop the capability to build friendships or stronger bond with others.
4. Develop the ability to communicate by articulating words and sentences clearly.
But aside from knowing the benefits that it can provide your child, one important thing to look into is identifying when your child should begin speech therapy.

When to Start?

It is advised for a child to undergo speech therapy as early as possible. The sooner the treatment starts, the greater the results to be expected. However, you must first secure a doctor’s order for your child’s developmental assessment. After that, you’ll be referred to speech therapy centers and be advised on the frequency of your child’s therapy sessions.

One of the highly recommended speech therapy centers is N. E. S. T. (Nurturing Early Skills Therapy) Center, Inc. This is where I chose to seek professional guidance for my son, as the center is managed by experienced health professionals who have undergone extensive training and advocate early intervention and family empowerment. Aside from that, we have considered its proximity to our place, its nice ambiance, and the facilities it provides.

Based on personal experience, they have a gentle but firm approach to kids that even protective parents will understand. Thanks to teachers like Teacher Trisha and Teacher Nina who take charge of my son’s Occupational Therapy and Speech therapy, respectively, I’ve seen tremendous improvements on how my son communicates and interacts.

If you want to know if there is a N. E. S. T. center near you, here’s a list of their branches for your reference:

Best nailcutter for babies

What is the best nail cutter for babies?

As a first time mom many years ago, i was on the lookout for the best nail cutter for babies. If I were to ask you which type of nail cutter do you use for your baby/toddler? Found the pink one in the photo getting kinda rusty — we haven’t used it for many, many years — since the time i accidentally hurt my eldest — while trying to trim her fingernails during her newborn days.

Best nailcutter for babies

I then discovered the scissor-type Pigeon nail cutter (the white one above), and never looked back. It is easier to use, and I have never accidentally hurt achiebelles again and my two (succeeding babies) younger babies. Im happy that it withstood the test of time too. I have used it on all my three kids!

This is especially important since mittens are no longer encouraged for newborns, and as we all know their nails grow long so fast!

Scissor-type baby nail cutter

Going back to the scissor-type nail cutter, it really is safe and easy use because even achie learned to trim her own nails using this type of baby nail cutter when she turned five. Yes it can still be used to cut her nails even if she is now a preschooler!

Yes, the scissor-type nail cutter may be more expensive than the pink clipper, but it took away the first-time-mom jitters that came with cutting those cute toenails and fingernails.

Glad to see that there are now more affordable scissor-type nail cutters in department stores and even on online stores today, like this set.

So which type do you use? If you use the clipper type, do you have a technique to prevent accidental skin cutting? Some say we should cut nails while babies are fast asleep? do you like the modern-type of nail cutter for babies like this?

As for me, holding them tight and getting into a routine of bi-weekly nail cutting sessions made them not dreadful of our home “mini mani pedi” sessions. They are actually looking forward to it.

I have recently written about restaurants and fastfood chains with kiddie party packages in the Philippines, and I have realized that kiddie parties and christening receptions may require a different type of venue.

And although parents can always celebrate their child’s christening in fastfood restaurants, some families may want to have a reception somewhere more subdued.

Here’s a list of happypinaymommy’s –

Suggested Restaurants for Christening Baptismal Party Reception Venues in Manila:

1. Romulo’s Cafe— if you are not expecting a really huge group for your kid’s christening reception then why not hold it at Romulo’s. The food is great, their venue in Jupiter Street in Makati is nice and most of all you can order lechon too. They also have a branch in the Tomas Morato area. Here is a link to their FB Page for your inquiries. The Manager over at Jupiter is very accommodating. Churches that are accessible to this venue include St. Andrew’s and Sacred Heart.

2. J. Cuppacakes –– Is one great venue also in the Jupiter street area. The catch though is that you can only accommodate I think less than 30 guests or you can always have the whole restaurant closed for your event (yes they are welcome to that idea) check out their FB page here for party information. The cakes are nice and superb, the staff are friendly, the venue is nice and the food is great. The owners are super hands-on too like Julianne and her mom personally answer the emails and they coordinate with the clients. They are flexible with the cake designs too! Churches that are near J. Cuppacakes include St. Andrew’s and Sacred Heart.

3. Gloria Maris — If you prefer Chinese dishes then look no further than Gloria Maris. They have banquet halls that can be used for various functions including Christening. Here’s a link to their FB Page.

4. Stacy’s — is a great place too for more subdued parties like christening receptions and baby showers. They have branches in The Fort and then in Capitol in QC. Churches that are near their QC branch include Sta. Maria Dela Strada in Katipunan, Parish of the Holy Sacrifice inside UP, and St. Peter’s Church along Commonwealth Avenue. Here’s a link to their FB Page for your inquiries.

Stacy's is a quaint reception area for baptismal parties, baby showers, and birthdays.

5. Conti’s — some Conti’s restaurants like the one in Greenbelt 2 have a function room that can accommodate intimate to small gatherings. I will no longer mention that cakes and the party food are superb here because it is already a given 🙂 Here’s a link to their website for your inquiries.

6. Kamayan, Saisaki and Dad’s — it is not generally a quiet or subdued place but it could be a great venue for an after christening party. They have several branches too. Here is a link to their party package info.

Dad's, Kamayan and Saisaki offers packages for Christening and Baptismal Parties

7. Milky Way — this has a relatively larger space compared to the other restaurants in our list and again, like conti’s i will no longer elaborate how great the food is here! For those who have yet to dine here they have great Kare-kare and superb Pinoy dishes that your guests will surely appreciate. It is located along Pasong Tamo in Makati. Their function rooms can accommodate 16, 45, and up to 100 guests respectively. Nearest church here is Don Bosco. Here’s a link to their website.

8. Max’s Restaurant-– is a Filipino institution already for baptismal receptions. They have the following inclusions in their Baptismal party package: Two (2) hours use of venue, Theme Cake, Gift for the baby, Free use of bassinet, Decorated Party Area , Party Balloons, Balloon Centerpieces, Welcome Banner, Invitations Cards, Guest Book with Pen, and Party Hosting. Check out their webpage here.

Max's restaurant also offers Baptismal or Christening Party packages in almost all of their branches. (Photo taken from their website)

9. Mom and Tina’s Restaurant – Is yet another cozy reception venue that is known for happy comfort food. Their venues can usually accommodate intimate gatherings of about 30 people for their Pasig and South Triangle branches. The set-up is usually for buffet, and the price per head from P700.00 to P960.00. They are however strict when it comes to set-ups as they “do not allow bringing in of food, beverages, desserts, cakes, food giveaways, and candy buffets.” Here is a link to their official webpage.

So there you have it. I will be updating this post as I come across more restaurants that are great as Christening reception venue. While most of the articles in my blog are intended to help yaya-less moms survive their journey, it also aims to provide support to full-time working moms who would need extra helping hands (and extra set/s of eyes) in rearing their children as they work outside the home to provide for them.

Yayas or nannies are a big help for most working moms since there are just a few US-Style Day Care Centers in the country that can help provide care for children of full-time working moms. For those of you who are planning to employ or have already employed one and would like to have them wear uniforms, then this write-up is for you.

Nanny uniforms have already evolved. I remember during my kabataan, most of the yayas in our village were not required to wear uniforms, and if ever they are, the uniform is just usually plain white.

Now, the modern yayas usually wear colorful scrub suits, or tailored uniforms of the same cut, and then sneakers or closed shoes.

And while this may entail some cost to parents (cheapest pair that i saw is at P250.00), it also has a lot of advantages. For instance, nannies would no longer have to invest on going out clothes if they are usually required to bring and pick-up the kids from school, and when they have to go with the family out of the home. Most of the schools have dress codes for the yayas who wait for their wards or those that bring them here and pick them up, the nanny uniform adheres to the dress code policy including the sneakers or closed shoes. The Nanny Uniform also helps in keeping a clean or neat look, especially when caring for newborns and babies. Besides, scrubs offer a comfortable wear.

So for moms out there who are wondering where to get those nanny uniforms here is a list of:

Where to buy Nanny Yaya Uniforms in the Philippines:

  1. Department Stores – In the home section of your favorite department store, you can find nanny uniforms usually in the same section where cloth table napkins, table runners, and kitchen towels are. This is true for SM Makati and Landmark Makati, and I am sure this also applies in the department store nearest you.
  2. Bambang – Bambang is not just the place to get affordable nebulizers, it is also the place where you can get the cheapest nanny uniforms! Just go to one of those scrub suit stores and choose from there. They have plain-colored, they have all-whites, and then they also have those with fun-looking prints. The slash is about P150.00 per pair versus mall prices, so if you live near the area, or will be buying for two or more yayas, then it will be worth the trip (and the traffic).

====================================================================================

You may also want to read:

=======================================================================================

  1. NeatNanny.ph – Is a one-stop shop for all the uniform needs you may have for your domestic staff. As of last check they offer free shipping for orders amounting to P1,000.00 and up. Most of the uniforms that they sell are in solid colors, or coordinated ternos. You can also buy polos for your drivers and male domestic staff, and even have made to order uniforms. Here is a link to their website.
  2. Cash and Carry Grocery Store – Big Supermarkets like Cash and Carry in Makati also carry Nanny Uniforms. As of last visit, I saw it in the same aisle where kitchen towels and table cloths are displayed. They have plain scrubs, and then those colorful scrubs that have cartoon characters and baby-friendly drawings on it.
  3. Lazada– If you would like to just shop from your home, then you can just buy the uniform/scrub suit off Lazada http://ho.lazada.com.ph/SHHJSy. As of publication date, they only have one style which is solid colors. Buy it here. http://ho.lazada.com.ph/SHHJSy
  4. Facebook Stores – There are several Facebook-Based online shops that sell Yaya’s Uniforms. You may want to check out the FB Shops of the following: Dolce and My Yaya, Unan Atbp., J&M’s Online Shop Catbalogan, Patrice Scrub Suits by JM Creations. These stores sell colorful printed scrub suits and uniforms in both V-Neck and Chinese Collared Uniforms.

So there you have it, hope this post has helped you find nanny uniforms for your child’s yaya. I Will be updating this post as soon as I discover more shops. If you have the time, hope you could drop by my Facebook page and hit the like button, so you can receive regular updates from Happypinaymommy.com direct on your newsfeed.

Moms, especially those that cloth diaper their little ones usually worry about the presence of ants during ant season – which in the Philippines, happens to be almost all year round.

And while there are a lot of insecticide and spray solutions that can address this concern, not all are safe to be used in the home, especially when there are babies around.

I have rounded up some baby safe and natural ways to get rid of ants. Some are using a DIY Solution, some homemade sprays, and some are meant to prevent them from inside the home – especially on our baby’s cloth diaper stash! So here are:

Natural and Baby Safe ways to kill ants:

  1. White Vinegar Spray Solution – This could just be the best and most baby-friendly ant-prevention solution there is. Just pour some white vinegar in a spray bottle, and spray where the ants are. If you see a trail? Spray on and watch them leave the trail and get dizzy. Do not worry about the sour smell as well, because it will dissipate, and in fact help deodorize a room. If the smell is too strong for you, you may want to add in 10-12 drops of either lemon, tea tree, eucalyptus or peppermint essential oil (buy it here), and then dilute the solution a bit with water, then shake before spraying.
  2. Use Baby Powder – While inhaling baby powder is definitely not safe for your little one, you can carry out this ant-killing experiment when your baby is not in the same room. Just sprinkle some powder on the ant trails, and watch the pesky creatures get disoriented.

(Post Continued Below)

==================================================================

You may also want to read:

===========================================================

  1. Sprinkles of Cinnamon Powder – Ants love sugar, but they hate other spices, especially Cinnamon and Pepper. And since pepper should be out of the question when babies are around as t may trigger allergies, and can even be ingested, cinnamon should be a great solution. Sprinkle in the ant trail, and you will soon see the ants disappear.
  2. Bay Leaf Plug – Bay leaf or what we locally call as “Laurel” can be used to prevent ant infestation the natural way. Just put some fresh or dried bay eaves in areas where you see ants converging, or in areas where they seem to come from.

If all else fails, and you would really want a strong and effective ant infestation solution without using really heavy chemicals then you might want to give Borax a try. Again borax is poisonous and should be kept out of children’s reach. Here in our country, Borax can be purchased from local hardwares (not ace, not handyman, and not True Value, but your neighborhood hardware). In the recipe that it shared, DIY Hangout says all you need is sugar, borax, warm water, cotton balls, and shallow containers. Of course you will need to KEEP THE CONTAINERS OUT OF CHILDREN’S REACH, but this promises to be an effective solution. Check out the step-by-step procedures here.

So there you have it, I am sure there are other Natural and Baby Safe ways to get rid of ants. I will be updating this post as soon as I learn more.

Looking for maid yaya and driver agencies in the Philippines? Here’s a list. (Photo Credits)

One of the biggest concerns of working parents is hiring competent, trustworthy and reliable yaya and househelp. With all the horror stories that have gone viral, the quest for the ultimate Inday has become more and more elusive for most families.

And while most would say that the best househelp or nanny could be a distant relative or someone referred by a relative or a friend from the province, not all families have the means to tap such talent especially those who may not have relatives in the provinces.

I have written several posts on yayas leaving when they are needed most, as well as permanent solutions to Yaya problems, and one of the steps to move on from losing a reliable kasambahay (or letting go of an inefficient one) is hiring a new one.

The next best option or place to hire one is from an agency that HOPEFULLY screens the yayas, maids, and househelp that it provides to its clients. And while there are horror stories about agency-referred yayas and maid, it cannot be denied that there are families who have been fortunate enough to have found a great kasambahay from an agency.

So for those of who you are willing to try their luck on an agency, (and those who may have extra moolah for placement fee), here is a list of –

Maid yaya and driver agencies in the Philippines:

  1. Maid Provider PH – This is on of the most modern way of hiring a kasambahay wherein after getting in touch with an agency, the agency will set up an interview – the method of which will depend on your availability. They offer phone interview, online interview, and even face-to-face interviews. Once you have chosen a househelp from the ones that they have lined up for you, you would have to settle the fees (which you can do over the internet as they accept credit cards) and they will deliver the yaya, maid or househelp right at your doorstep. To know more about their agency services, here is a link to their website.
  2. Maid in the Philippines – Is yet another Maid and yaya agency that promises to provide competent services to your family. They can even provide you a cook which has an experience in local and international food, they can also provide for you a caregiver for your elders or loved ones with disabilities, as well as drivers and other domestic help needs. They boast of having a wide range of maids to choose from, one day hiring process, free replacement within a six month period, plus a refund guarantee. Their service is automated as well as the resume of the domestic help that you can choose from can be emailed to you so you can choose and review prior to conducting interviews. They also deliver the maid or yaya to your home upon settlement of fees. Here is a link to their website.

(Post Continued Below)

========================================================

===================================================================

  1. Charmonde Cane Manpower – Is a maid and yaya agency provider based in Rizal. They claim that they provide certified and affordable househelp, yayas and caregivers, who are well-trained, have appropriate NBI clearances, and have undergone medical screening. Once you have specified your needs, they will present to you the househelp that you can interview, you will then choose from the roster of maids and househelp that they have and then they will bring the maid to your home soon after. They promise that they do not have hidden fees, and that the contracts that they have are all in accordance to the Kasambahay Law. Here is a link to their website.
  2. Maid.Ph – Is yet another yaya agency that promises to provide reliable domestic help for your family. Apart from presenting to you an online bio data of prospective yaya and househelp, they also have in their file biometrics of the domestic helpers in their roster. They also claim that they conduct a background investigation on the maids that are part of their manpower pool and that they do a stringent checking of the legal documents that are being presented to therm. Head on to their website here.

So there you have it, I am sure there are other Maid, yaya, and driver agencies in the Philippines that you can choose from. Again, please, please do your own diligent work in checking the agencies and the maids that you choose to care for your families. No one can ever guarantee that. On my part, I will be updating this blog post once I have learned about more maid agencies in the Philippines. If you have time, hope you can drop by my Facebook Page, to receive happypinaymommy.com updates straight on your newsfeed. Please hit the like button while you’re at it too!

If you are wondering where to buy those cute leg warmers to match your cloth diapers then this post is for you. Leg warmers are very convenient to use when cloth diapering because unlike busha pants and tights, you no longer have to remove it when changing nappies. I earlier wrote about a specific brand which is Babylegs — and you can read it here.

So for mommies out there who are looking for leg warmers, I have collated a list of some of the shops that sell these. Here’s –

Where to buy Baby Leg Warmers in the Philippines:

  1. Department Stores – You can find leg warmers in the socks section or baby section of any department store — saw some in SM Makati and Landmark Makati. Burlington has leg warmers in three sizes – small, medium, and large. The sizes run small though for chunky-thighed babies.
  2. Lazada – Also sells a wide assortment of leg warmers – check it out here. They carry various brands like the HKS brand (see it here), and then the Bluelans brand – check it out here, and other brands that offer cute prints and designs.

8 Ways to save when you have a newborn baby

Saddled with too much expenses? Here are 8 Ways to save when you have a newborn baby. (Photo Credits)

Expenses pile-up when you have a newborn baby. From the pre-natal check-ups, pre-birth shopping, to hospital expenses, it is really easy to break the bank especially when the budget has not been thoroughly planned.

Once the baby is born, expenses continue to accumulate. From his basic needs, to monthly check-ups and immunizations, up to other miscellaneous expenses. Thankfully there are a good number of ways to scrimp on the monthly expenses upon the arrival of your new addition.

Here are —

Ways to save when you have a newborn baby:

  1. Breastfeed – It is the most natural thing that you can do to provide the needs of your baby. You do not need anything special, just a clean breast and a hungry baby and say goodbye to the many expenses brought about by Formula Feeding. Apart from not spending on Formula (which can rack up up to more than P3,000 pesos a month even more when you’ve got a kid with a sensitive tummy), you also get to save on feeding bottle expenses, regular purchasing of teats and bottle-feeding accessories, the expenses that the daily washing and sterilizing of bottles entail. All these plus of course the best benefit of all – your newborn becomes less-susceptible to illnesses – that means less hospitalizations, medications, and future diseases. Know more benefits of Breastfeeding here. And in case you’d have to go back to work and invest in an efficient and hardworking pump, your expenses for such can be recouped within two to three months.
  2. Use Cloth Diapers – You can save up to P2,000.00 a month for choosing cloth over disposable diapers. Newborns are notorious for using 10-12 nappies a day so imagine buying these disposable diapers at P8.00 a piece? Yes cloth diapering can be a one-time big time expense (except when you get addicted to it), but the P4,000++ that you will spend for cloth diapers can be used until potty training time and can be passed on to your future babies. In case you are planning to just have one child, these cloth nappies can be re-sold to other moms at half the price returning half of your investment! What’s more is that if you cannot afford the initial investment, you can start from buying pre-loved from other moms. And to add more icing on the cake – you are helping the environment by not adding garbage to the dumpsites! Here’s where you can buy cloth diapers for your newborn.

(Post Continued Below)

=====================================================

You may also want to read:

=================================================================

  1. Use cloth wipes – Before I discovered and mustered the courage to use cloth wipes, we spend up to P500.00 a month for disposable baby wipes for our eldest during her newborn phase. Thank goodness for fabric stores that sell Flannel, we now have wipes that are good for two to three days wash, which also go in with our diaper laundry. Check out my past entry here on where to buy fabric for wipes. Alternately you can also use old shirts, old receiving blankets for this purpose. Recycle an old wipes container, and mix in a wipes solution either in an old sprayer or a mason jar-like container. Pour some drops of baby oil and shampoo in a cup of water, and you now have a wipes solution that you can spray either on the cloth wipe or directly on your baby’s bum.
  2. Take care of the Baby Yourself – This may be hard, but if you can savor the chance to take care of your newborn on your own. Forego getting a nanny (It is hard to find a good one anyway), and take advantage of your maternal instincts! It is a journey you will never forget. By the way, by choosing not to get a Yaya for your baby you get to save at least P5,000.00 in monthly expense which represents her salary, benefits, as well as living (food, toiletry, utility) expenses.
  3. Say yes to Hand-me-downs – Yes it is your first baby, but do not hesitate to say yes to the Hand-me-downs well-meaning relatives and friends give you. If you are OC and it is an article of clothing, you can always disinfect with a hot wash. Same goes with baby gear that are still in great condition.
  4. Hold-off on the shopping – This is one lessons First-Time Moms usually earn the hard way. There are a lot of stuff and baby gear that the baby will not actually need and use in her lifetime. Like how many booties does she need? And how many times will she be wearing those cute onesies? In reality all your baby needs are just clean clothes, a blanket, diapers, and you!
  5. Never hesitate to buy pre-loved – Most budget-conscious mothers are learning that there is nothing wrong with buying pre-loved. Buy/Sell and Trade groups are aplenty now and moms should take advantage of it. Baby Gears that hardly get used and are still in mint condition get sold over the internet surplus stores and the like. You will be surprised at how much savings you can garner with using or buying pre-loved newborn stuff. Here are some alternative places where you can shop for your newborn.
  6. Take advantage of what the government has to offer — It may be a hotly debated topic in local parenting forums, but the fact is our government offers free immunization shots for babies. Drop by your Barangay health center and ask for an immunization schedule. Discuss the pros and cons with your family, and if you decide to take advantage of the taxes that you are paying for, the just bring our baby to the HC as scheduled. Your private pedia can always administer the shots for vaccines that are unavailable in the center, so you would not have to worry about your baby missing a dose or an immunization. Also, if you are fine with it, monthly check-ups for babies are also free in barangay health centers.
  7. Buy Generic – With my eldest I buy everything labelled “baby.” Baby detergent, baby dishwashing stuff, baby whatever only to find out later it costs up to four times more than the regular products. I’m sure they have a more sensitive formula, but there are generic items that work as good as those that can be bought for a more reasonable price! Like Calla detergent. At P74.00 per kilo, it can wash a lot of cloth diapers compared to a baby brand that will cost you up to P200.00 for every kilogram. Discernment is definitely the key.

So there you have it, I am sure there are other ways to save on your newborn’s expenses. Ill be updating this post as soon as I discover more. Hope you can drop by my Facebook Page and hit the like button, so you can receive Regular Updates from Happy Pinay Mommy.

Aircon-free ways to keep babies and kids cool this summer

Looking for Aircon-free ways to keep babies and kids cool this summer? Mommy Rita keeps Baby Ethan cool by allowing him to splash in his inflatable pool. (Thanks Mommy Rita for allowing us to use Baby Ethan’s Photo here!)

The sweltering heat has been the concern of everyone nowadays, and most moms are looking for strategies to cool their babies amid the intense summer heat.

My little shobe is having a hard time outdoors nowadays as anytime she is out of the house or the car, she does not only sweat beads and beads of perspiration — she sweats profusely you’d think she just came out of the shower!

But our little ones cannot just stay inside air-conditioned areas the whole summer! They still need to get out, and get active. At the same time, we parents should also have a respite from the sky-rocketing electric bills the summer brings. So–

Here are 10 Aircon-free ways to keep babies and kids cool this summer:

  1. Do not be afraid to strip them of their clothes! Those cute cloth diapers do not have adorable prints for nothing! Just make sure you have applied a safe anti-mosquito repellent on their skin before heading outdoors. Young kids on the other hand can just wear mesh-fabric or “aircon” sandos and light cotton shorts.

    2.  Bring out the pool or the batya. Not everyone has an access to a home pool or swimming pool in their clubhouse but every home has a batya! Set it up, bring out some bath toys and let them splash away! Just make sure to still use some baby sun screen on them, and that you or someone you trust watches them closely. Babies can drown even in small amounts of water.

3. Bring out the popsicles. Whether it is a breastmilk popsicle or a fresh fruit popsicle or even store-bought ones, your little darling will surely enjoy the freezing coolness of this treat! Do you have an older child? Why not take it even a notch higher by making old-fashioned ice candy with your little love?

4. Hydrate! Make sure your littles drink up water and have unlimited access to your milk! This will ensure they are adequately hydrated, and the sweat they release is replaced and body fluids are replenished.

5. Frozen fruit for dessert. Skip the carb-filled cakes and meryendas and give your children frozen cut up fruits. Melons, pineapples, bananas, avocados, watermelons are perfect for freezing.

6. Cold water spray. Remember the Evian brumisateur? Make a homemade and baby-friendly version by just using cold water from the ref in a recycled pocket sprayer, and spray on to your little one to freshen her up. For you mama, you can use this recipe.

6. Fresh Juice Galore. If your baby or child is old enough to appreciate juices then you might want to serve them ice cold fresh juices like fresh buko juice, calamansi juice, dalandan juice, melon juice, and the like. Young kids will also enjoy almost-frozen smoothies using fresh bananas, mangoes, strawberries, avocados and the like. The milk or yogurt component will also help up their calcium consumption for the day!

7. Cold compresses. Freeze wet wash cloth, and offer it to your child when he or she feels too warm for comfort. Perfect areas for the compress include the neck and nape area.

8. Ask the pedi. Ask your pediatrician‘s advice if you can use baby powder on your child at least to help keep too much sweating at bay.

9. Multiple baths. As long as it is quick, there is nothing wrong with bathing your baby two to three times a day, especially before nap and bed time.

10. Get Native! Serve native icy Filipino coolers to your babies and kids, just go easy on the sugar. They will surely enjoy Mais Con Hielo, Halo-Halo, Saba con Hielo, and even Buco Pandan, or the usual Fiesta Fruit salad.

So there you have it I am sure there are other ways to cool babies and kids this summer without having to use the A/C. I promise to update this post as soon as I get to discover more. Hope you could drop by my Facebook page and hit the like button, so you can receive regular updates from Happypinaymommy.com direct on your newsfeed.
