Buying art supplies is not that difficult and you can buy these items from art supply stores in your neighborhood or even online. Listed below are some tips for buying art supplies:

Art supply store trips

A Guide to Buying Art Supplies. If you’re just beginning your artistic career, you’ll need to buy supplies to help you create a wide variety of works of art. While you should always buy the highest quality materials possible, it’s important to also be aware of budget limitations. You may want to buy a cheap art supply to save money, but make sure the material you’re buying is in good condition. Buying supplies from a reputable artist by using hobby lobby coupon is always the best option because you can see firsthand whether they are of high quality or not.

Visiting art supply stores is a great way to sample the different materials and see if they fit your budget. You can purchase a variety of tools and paints, as well as brushes, canvasses, and more. It’s also a great opportunity to test out your new tools and learn what works best for you. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced artist, you’ll find some great deals if you shop smart and ask around.

Buying in bulk

There are many benefits to buying art supplies in bulk, including cost savings. Many art supply stores offer wholesale pricing, as well as membership cards, which allow members to purchase art supplies at a discount. These cards can save you a considerable amount of money while giving you a wide variety of items to choose from. When you purchase art supplies in bulk, you’ll be able to sell them for a higher profit when they’re sold individually.

While you can save money by purchasing art supplies in bulk, it’s best to avoid purchasing them as single pieces. Art supplies sets may only cost a few dollars more than purchasing the pieces separately, but they’re often worth the extra money. If you’re looking for cheap art supplies for a class, you can try an art supply kit. Art kits let children make their own paintings without the hassle of buying individual pieces.

Buying online

Although purchasing art supplies in a physical store can be a more enjoyable experience, some people prefer to shop for their materials online. While online art stores are convenient, it can be challenging to know which ones are legitimate and which ones are just scams. Here are a few tips to help you make an informed decision on which art supplies to buy online. Listed below are some of the benefits of buying art supplies online. Buying art supplies online is convenient and safe!

First of all, you’ll find an enormous selection of products. Many top retail sites have art supplies listed, and Amazon is no different. The site carries everything from typical art supplies to more niche items like soap-making materials and pottery clay. You can also find great deals on children’s art supplies on Amazon. For example, if you’re looking for paints for painting on walls, Amazon offers washable acrylics. Buying art supplies online is a great way to save money!

Buying from private sellers

Art supplies sold by private sellers are generally cheaper than those available from major chain stores. However, prices can vary greatly, sometimes from pennies to hundreds of dollars. Before purchasing from a private seller, do some research. Find out what standard rates are for art supplies in your area. Profit margins will vary depending on the item being sold – inexpensive items may only yield a low-profit margin, while expensive supplies can earn a 30% or higher margin. When purchasing art supplies, consider sourcing them from several wholesalers to ensure that you are getting the best price for the product.

Baking chocolate crinkles is double the fun with little hands

Hello ladies!

Hope you are all having a great day so far. Today, I will share with you a recipe for a yummy dessert, which could also be a snack alongside a glass of ice cold milk! This post, will feature one of my childhood favorite pastries, Chocolate Crinkles.

Chocolate Crinkles is one of the first pastries I learned to bake as an older kid. And why not? It is so easy to make. It is so forgiving actually. Besides, the ingredients are pantry staples!  The only downside in this recipe is the wait time before we can form those yummy-yummy balls.

Baking Chocolate Crinkles as a fun activity

Fast forward to when I became a mom, Chocolate Crinkles are just so fun to make with the kids. Kids love messy hands and clay consistency and so making these yummy discs of chocolatey goodness is a walk in the park, and super enjoyable. HOWEVER, like me, they too get impatient about the wait time for chilling or refrigeration.

But after two hours of chilling, the littles get so excited rolling those dough balls, and rolling them once again in powdered sugar. Can I blame them? No, no, no. I was once a kid, so why not share the joy right? More importantly, their crinkle making time is also a time for rest for me. I let them enjoy themselves for a good 20 to 30 minutes, and just re-chill the dough balls so that it will not spread out too thinly while baking.

Let’s bake chocolate crinkles!

So, without further ado, I am now sharing with you, my little familia’s tried and tested go-to recipe for chocolate crinkles. If you decide to double this recipe, just store the left-over crinkles (if any, hahaha – that is how delicious it is!) in a vacuum sealed container. BTW if you are looking for more baking recipes, please check out our baking recipes here

Ingredients:

·       ½ cup cocoa powder

·       ¾ cup white sugar

·       ¼ cup melted butter, cooled

·       2 eggs, beaten

·       1 cup All Purpose Flour

·       1 tsp Baking Powder

·       ¼ tsp Salt

·       1 tsp vanilla extract

·       Powdered sugar for dusting

Procedure:

Sift the cocoa, flour, and baking powder. Set aside. In a bowl, mix the melted butter and the white sugar until fully combined. Add in the eggs and the vanilla extract. Add the sale into the dry ingredients, and combine it with the wet mixture in two increments.

Cover the bowl with a plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least two hours. After two hours, you can now preheat the oven at 350F or 180c. Scoop and form the chilled dough balls according to preferred size. Arrange them in a cookie sheet or baking tray lined with parchment paper. Bake for 10-12 minutes, and let it set in the pan for another 20 minutes.

Serve and enjoy! Thanks for stopping by, and till next post!

Here is a kid approved oatmeal raisin cookie that will surely make your home smell like Christmas!

Making oatmeal raisin cookies is one way to help increase your children’s fiber intake. This recipe I will be sharing with you today, is super no-fuss, and it can even buy you time (click here for more kids activities) to do other chores, or have a half an hour to yourself to catch up on your reading and enjoy your homemade iced americano!

How so? Just prepare the batter, and get the little kids “help out” by forming the cookies with their cute little hands! Yes there may be an added mess that you must clean up, but hey the 30 minutes these squiggly bodies would be more than enough to compensate for that. Plus of course, the cookies that you and the tots will surely enjoy!

Oatmeal Raisin Cookie Recipe

The first thing to do it so assemble the ingredients. Make sure to melt the butter first. Salted is best, but if you do not have salted butter then just add a pinch of salt to the recipe. Here goes!

Ingredients:

1/2 cup butter

3/4 cup muscovado or dark brown sugar

1 cup flour

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 tsp cinnamon

1 egg

1 1/2 cup rolled oats

1/2 to 1 cup raisins

You can add nuts too!

Make cookie baking fun

You can then make the dough balls using an ice cream scooper, or get the little tots making the dough balls for you. Yes it would not be perfect, but it is an excellent activity for them. You can help them out or leave them be! whatever the case, this recipe is so forgiving it can withstand all those tiny hands and it would not melt or become too gooey in the end. But if you do not have time to make all those dough balls and the tots are not too keen to do the activity then you can check out this post on easy choco chip cookie bars.

Place the cookies in a cookie sheet lines with a silicone mat or a parchment paper for easy clean up.

Ready to bake the cookies

When you are ready to bake the cookies, you can preheat your oven to 350F (or 180c), and bake the cookies for 12 to 15 minutes! Your house will surely smell like Christmas even if it is Summer! Enjoy the cookies any time if the day (or evening). You can store it in an air tight container and it can last for up to two weeks! Thanks for stopping by and till next post!

There are a lot of hidden gems worth exploring in the Philippines!

If you are ever on a road trip and want to have a less common experience that is not as crowded as some tourist destinations, the Angono Petroglyphs and Pililla Wind Farm are excellent choices.

When traveling with small children, the scenic drives make for a great experience. The views provide plenty of opportunities to play car games. Road trips are perfect for family bonding, and exploring hidden gems together creates lasting memories.

The only downside to road trips is the possibility of getting a small dent in your car because of debris on the road. Thankfully, these dents are easy to fix on your own with a plunger, or if you prefer a repair shop, they can cost around 800 pesos.

Angono Binangonan Petroglyphs

Located in Rizal, the Angono Binangonan Petroglyphs are rock drawings made by carving into a rock wall in Angono, Rizal, Philippines.

There are many symbolic representations associated with both healing magic and sympathetic magic in these engravings. Tagalog folk religion considers the site sacred, believing it to be the home of anitos or ancestor spirits.

Visitors can explore these ancient drawings independently or take guided tours led by experts from the National Museum of Anthropology in Manila or other private organizations certified for tourism services.

The National Museum of the Philippines declared it a National Cultural Treasure in 1973. The Angono Binangonan Petroglyphs is the perfect stop for those interested in the culture and history of the Philippines.

Pililla Wind Farm

Also in Rizal is the Pililla Wind Farm with 27 wind turbine generators. The whole wind farm can generate enough electricity to power more than 66,000 households.

Pililla Wind Farm is a must-see for any visitor to Rizal. The site offers panoramic views of Laguna Bay and Tanay, and lush greenery surrounds the wind turbines. Visitors can walk to various parts of the site, making it accessible for all ages and mobility levels.

Pililla Wind Farm is located about two hours from Manila. It is considered one of the country’s top leaders in clean energy, contributing to its vision of becoming a clean energy economy.

Hidden gems can be found all over the Philippines. Whether you are interested in history, culture, or nature exploration, there is a hidden gem waiting for you to explore with your family on your next road trip.

Thank you for reading up mommies! Till next post!

They are wonderful rewards indeed!

Hi ladies, starting the week right by appreciating one of my children.

I have been chronicling some stories about my middle child here in the blog. If you are new here, well, Siobs is my cheerful, rambunctious, yet super-duper kind daughter.

The other day, she walked up to me while I was meal planning and drawing up my grocery orders. And she told me this out of the blue:

“Mama, you don’t need to buy me a present for Christmas ha. Just save up the money. Santa’s going to give me a gift naman anyway, sayang naman ang pera.”

Little Siobs

Oh dear siobs, my tender-hearted daughter, you never fail to amaze me

In reality, children are sensitive enough to understand that times are tough these days. The lockdowns have affected the finances of many families. Even families whose businesses or work have not been affected by this ongoing pandemic, are choosing to save up and tighten their grip on their savings.

Such financial situation and the upcoming Christmas season might be putting a pressure on most parents. This is especially true if the kids are used to receiving gifts and trips and a lavish spread during the holidays.

But based from what my daughter told me, I figured that maybe we should not feel pressured. I think those of certain age can already understand that they will not receive an extravagant Christmas present this year. Explain it through a heart to heart talk. In reality, since kids are observant, they will get the gist if they see or hear you habitually trying to save up. Children four years old and below, on the other hand, hardly know what to expect yet during the holidays so they do not get disappointed too easily.

Present VS Presence

Kids are smart and sensitive creatures, and most of them would choose to spend time and play with us over those expensive gizmos we can buy them. So choose lambing time, game time, family movie time, baking day, and going under their forts with them.

Your presence is much more appreciated than presents so do not be a tad guilty! These activities tend to be remembered fondly throughout their grown up years, and even when they become parents too!

Take heart, Ladies. You are raising them well! Till next post!

Here are some of the best Disney shows your toddler will love.

Hello there Mommies! Sharing with you today a guest post that can help us decide on the shows we will allow our toddlers to watch. Thanks to fellow writer James Dorian, for writing for us:

Best Disney Shows Your Toddler Will Love

It’s an age-old problem: should toddlers watch TV? If you ask me, they should watch educational, but entertaining shows as well. As long as parents control their time in front of the screen and bring it down to a reasonable limit, they will only benefit from it.

I mean, admit it: you used to love Disney movies and shows as a kid, too. Why would we deprive our kids from the experience? I already started using Disney+ and let me tell you: my entire family enjoys it. If you already use Apple TV, you can add get Disney+ on that service. Here are the instructions on how to do that: https://setapp.com/how-to/get-disney-plus-on-apple-tv.

Now, onto the main point: what shows can you watch with your toddler? I’ll list a few options that my kid loves.

  1. Muppet Babies

This one is all about fun! You can put the show on when you want your toddler to relax, laugh, and use their imagination. The baby versions of our favorite Muppet characters play different games and go on weird adventures. It’s a new, modern show that still hasn’t been wrapped up. Once you go through the three seasons that are currently available, you’ll have to wait for the new releases.

  1. Handy Manny

My kid loves this one! Manny, a handy repairman, lives in a town where its residents speak two languages: English and Spanish. Manny’s tools also talk, and they help children to learn a foreign language from a very early age. It’s a lovely show that activates their hunger for learning. Plus, they may get interested in fixing things. That’s a skill they can use through life.

This show also has four seasons.

  1. Mickey Mouse Clubhouse

Mickey Mouse is a classic, innocent character that everybody loves. He’s been a quintessential symbol of childhood for generations. In this show, he helps toddlers to learn basic math and develop their initial problem-solving skills. The episodes are interactive, and they truly engage children.

There are four seasons of several short episodes, so it will take some time for your toddler to go through them all. You can feel free to repeat the episodes; nobody gets bored with them.

  1. Doc McStuffins

Doc McStuffins has many stuffed animal friends with different health problems. She runs a clinic for them. Broken toys? Not a problem when they have access to a great doctor!

Children benefit from this show in multiple ways. They learn how to care for their toys. It’s less likely for toddlers to break toys when they watch this show and imagine how they go through pain. Plus, the show makes them less scared of doctors. These are good people, who only try to help others. Isn’t that a nice lesson for a kid to learn?

It’s an award-winning show with its fifth season currently running.

  1. The Lion Guard

This is another new show that’s still coming out with new episodes. It’s currently on season 4. Kion, Simba’s son, is the main character. He has lovely companions, who are adventurous and always looking for trouble.

Both parents and kids love this show. It triggers a toddler’s love for animals, friendships, and adventures.

  1. Puppy Dog Pals

Are you a dog lover? Do you want to inspire your child to fall in love with animals, too? This is the perfect show for that! Rolly and Bingo, the two Pugs who run the show, love having fun. They adore their owner Bob, so that teaches a valuable life lesson: animals are full of love as long as you show them some attention.

Throughout their missions, Rolly and Bingo learn about the way the world works.

Currently, the fourth season is running on Disney+.

  1. PJ Masks

This is the perfect show to watch before sleep. Gekko, Owlette, and Catboy are normal kids with normal problems. They go to school, eat their meals, and have usual lives. But they are also superheroes at night. They fight the bad guys and save the world. By the next day, they fix all problems and bring the town back to order.

Your kids will love the stories of fighting crime before bedtime. They will get something good to dream about: being a superhero.

What Shows Will You Watch?

Disney+ no longer offers a free trial, which used to last for 30 days when the service was launched. But that’s okay. It’s still affordable and very valuable for kid-friendly content. You can pay on a month-to-month basis and cut the subscription when you don’t need it.

As for the shows, I love most of them! My toddler does, too.

Six ways to make learning more enjoyable for kids

Six ways to make learning more enjoyable for kids

I have always thought that learning and study time will always equate to fun time for my children — until one of my kids became of school age. I realized that I have to make learning more enjoyable, and that I have to think of fun ways to reinforce what she learns in school.

And although I am fine with my children not getting a perfect mark in all of their quizzes and exams, I would like them of course to be an above average student or at the very least have good grades. More importantly, I want them to have good study habits that will guide them through the rest of their school years.

Instilling Joy in Studying

In the parenting books and resources that I have read, senior preschool years, and early elementary is the best time to foster good study habits. I think having a positive attitude about learning can be likened to great eating habits, as well as other habitual healthy routines that we as parents would like to establish on our children. Once they get used to reviewing for quizzes, prioritizing assignments and projects, and loving reading in general, studying will come as second nature to them even without us having to nag them all the time.

Does your child enjoy home study time? Or are you having problems encouraging him because he is either too tired or too bored already?

Does your child enjoy home study time? Or are you having problems encouraging him because he is either too tired or too bored already?

But how do we make learning more enjoyable for kids? When our homes are filled with distraction like TV shows, games and gadgets and traditional toys, it will be hard to compete for your child’s attention. Add to that the stress that some children experience for having to wake up really early to beat the heavy traffic on the way to school, and then back again to our homes. Establishing a fun learning environment can indeed be a challenge, hence I have always kept on reading books and articles written by renowned child education experts that will help in this aspect.

Allow me to share with you some of the learnings I have gained and provide tips for you, my fellow moms, on how to make studying more enjoyable for children.

One of the guide questions that helped me come up with the tips below is “if I were in my kids’ shoes, how would I like my mom to help me out with my studies?” Try asking yourself the same question as well because most likely this will clue you in as to how your kid will find learning at home more enjoyable.

Tips to make learning more enjoyable for kids:

1. Do not be too rigid. Elementary aged children are taught in a formal classroom setting, hence providing a variation at home can be more exciting for your child. For instance, you can use other learning methods that will be fun for your children. Visual aids, and other materials that can help them grasp their lessons well can help get and retain their attention.

2. Think out of the box.  Learning and studying after school should not just be confined in your living room, dining table, or your child’s room. You can always get out of your home to teach them the concepts that they find hard to understand. For instance, types of plants are better seen in real life than just being read on photos. A practical way of teaching children addition with decimal points, or other math concepts is in the supermarket where they can see price tags, add up the costs, and more. For younger children, a lot of practice counting can be done in groceries too! Same with identification of fruits and vegetables (and even sea animals!). Make that field trip during the weekend, or if you live with one close by, take a short trip today!

Feeding fish is a good way to teach kids about fishes, you can also count the fish, review the different parts of the fish, how they breathe, eat, sleep, talk about their colors etc.

3. Media is not your arch enemy. Media has always been vilified when it comes to learning, but hey, remember during our school years there are days when we would go to the AV Room to watch a movie or a documentary to help us grasp the concept the teacher is teaching us. As parents we should use the television and the internet to our advantage. A perfect example was when I was teaching my eldest to ready the clock. She gets bored when I teach it to her the way a teacher would. So what I did was to buy her a toy clock, and let her watch a Youtube clip of learning how to read the clock. Set a timer and let her watch. She will enjoy it. Same goes with Nat Geo Wild, Nat Geo People, and Animal Planet. They get to learn a lot about the world, the animals, and nature. I am glad that my daughter likes the show Monster Fish, Animals Gone Wild, Places We Go, Living Free and even cooking shows like Sugar and Chocolate Covered. I also make her watch snippets of TV news (both local and foreign) when there are weather disturbances, or important current events that take place.

4. Make study time fun and relaxing. Make the area conducive for studying, and at the same time serve them their favorite snack or treat. My eldest daughter Achiebelles loves Oishi Pillows and I indulge her with this to make her look forward to assignment time. Same goes with Bread Pan that she loves to munch on during our reviews. And since both have a variety of flavors to choose from, we do not experience the “sawa” factor because I get to rotate the flavors and the snacks for every study time.

Give your child her favorite snack while she is studying or doing her homework. Snacking can make reviewing lessons or doing homework less rigid because they get to have mini breaks while munching.

Give your child her favorite snack while she is studying or doing her homework. Snacking can make reviewing lessons or doing homework less rigid because they get to have mini breaks while munching.

5. Never stop learning. As parents we should also not put a stop in learning. I may have three kids and a parenting website, but I have NEVER claimed to be an expert on parenting. That is why I emphasize in most of my articles that I read a lot, and talk to older and more experienced parents because they have survived the parenting trenches that I am treading right now so that I could learn more and impart these learnings to my readers. We should find the time to research ways about how to better connect with our children, make their environment more conducive for learning, and help make studying time for fruitful for them.

6. Reward the children for their good study habits. Doing great in an exam or quiz, or getting high grades in school should earn children some sort of reward from their parents. It does not have to be expensive. Simple rewards like a movie time with the family with them choosing the film to watch, a favorite treat from their favorite restaurant, later bed time during weekends, and even a simple toy. In our household we have this rewards chart to track the good behavior of our children, using stickers and rewards.

Here's a photo of our rewards chart. We have a new one for each month. The kids can "claim" their rewards every weekend in case they already have earned enough stickers for the rewards that they are aiming for.

Here’s a photo of our rewards chart. We have a new one for each month. The kids can “claim” their rewards every weekend in case they already have earned enough stickers for the rewards that they are aiming for.

If you wish you can make your family chart more specific towards study habits. Give badges for every quizzes your child passed, or each assignment that she worked on without much assistance from you.

Like us adults, children get tired and stressed out. Their bodies are not built for waking up too early to battle heavy traffic on the way to school. They may get too tired from battery of examinations and quizzes. Extra-curricular activities can also tire them out.

Allow your child to recharge in a fun way. Let them rest first before prodding them to work on their assignment. When we get home from school, I usually allow my child to rest for a bit, give her a snack like Oishi Pillows plus a drink of water or milk, and then relax for a while.Lately, she is also into eating Bread Pan. She likes the different flavors especially the butter and the toasted garlic.

Serve after-school snacks to your children so that they have enough energy to review and do their assignments.

Serve after-school snacks to your children so that they have enough energy to review and do their assignments. The above photo is a sample of what I serve Achiebelles as her after school snack — Veggie Pasta with Bacon and Creme, Watermelon Cubes, Cashew, and Oishi Bread Pan.

After finishing her after-school merienda, she can play with her siblings, or play with her toys. We then settle down to do our assignment and review for examinations. After that we fix her things for the following day, and prepare other things she may need for school.

So there you have it, hope you have learned from this post, and would give the above suggestions a try as we all journey into establishing good study habits for our children. Looking for Birthday Party Loot bag Content Ideas in the Philippines? Read up. (Photo Credits)

I remember when I was a kid, one of the birthday party stuff I look forward to when attending a children’s party is the loot bag. Back then, giving a stuffed toy (which is now referred to as a plushie hahaha) is “pangmayaman” as the usual lootbag during those days were candies and small toys, or school supplies packed in a shiny sandwich bag held by a yarn.

My mom tried to be creative in one of my kiddie parties as she bought some cute baskets under the Quiapo bridge and filled it with happy goodies that will light up any child’s eyes. But that too became passe.

Fast forward X number of years later, the birthday party lootbag content ideas in the Philippines now has become more sophisticated, and fun for both the kiddie guests and their moms. If you are still on the lookout for a birthday party souvenir or what to fill your child’s party lootbags then this post is for you.

Well, lootbag contents in my opinion should somewhow match your party theme too. For instance, a friend had a pool party so their lootbag consisted of a pail shovel, and water squirters. A handy mannyu party on the other hand can give away pretend tool toys in a tool caddy. Anyway, before I go farther from my original point, here are some —

Birthday party loot bag content ideas for your child’s party in the Philippines:

1. Coloring and Activity Books. Why not fill your child’s loot bag with these stuff so that both the kids and the parents will be happy that for once, their child did not come home with tartar-inducing sweets! Fun and Smart Kids Shop has loot bag contents at Divisoria price levels (follow them at shopee so you could get nationwide free shipping too!) They have the usual nice pens, art materials, small coloring books, sticker books, and craft items. The item below which is a dot-to-dot style coloring book comes with free eight pieces of markers for only P100.00 Check out their Facebook page here.

2. Egg Surprise Chocolate and Toys. Kids really drool over toy eggs that come with yummy chocolate and fun loot-type toys. You can buy kinder surprise toys at less than P50.00 in most supermarkets but these come only with generic toys. There are imported versions that can be bought online that are themed like the ones being sold by Clique Trading over at Shopee.ph, and as of posting a box of six pieces range from P380.00 to P450.00, sample themes include Disney Princesses and Hot Wheels. This shop also sells Egg Collectibles that do not come with chocolates, instead it only has toys inside like the My Little Pony, Lego, Adventure Time, Pokemon, Finding Dory and more. Think about the youtube Egg Surprise videos your preschooler loves to watch – they might just have it. They also sell Zaini Egg Surprise toys that also comes with different themes at a wholesale price of 199.00 per box of three, minimum order of 10 boxes. Here’s a link to their Shopee store.

10. Traditional Loot Bag Toys – Simple and fun toys like a bottle of bubbles, matchbox cars, glow in the dark figures and shapes, plush stickers, stationery and pencils, mini-puzzles, kaleidoscopes, and the like remain to be a hit even among kids nowadays. These can be purchased in any toy store, book store, and of course cheapest at Divisoria, and other DIY Party Supplies Mecca (if you haven’t read my post on where to buy DIY Party supplies then you may read it here ). Always remember it is the thought of making the kiddie guests happy even after the party is what will always count and never the cost of the giveaway or loot bag content. The Happy Meal and Kinder Bueno remain to be a hit all these years because of the simple toy that comes with every package!

You may also want to set up a throwback type of loot bag for your adult guests – this time it has Goya Gold Coins, Fibisco Chocolate Mallows, Bazooka Bubble Gum, White Rabbit (na edible yung wrapper ha!), Tootsie Roll, Swits Orange Candy, Mikmik Milk Powder, Text Cards, Pog, Jackstone, and Plastic Balloon!

Where to order smash cakes

Wondering where to order smash cakes in the Philippines? Here’s where you can buy or request for a custom made one. (Photo Credits)

Smash Cakes are just so popular in the recent years, as it is a great props for first birthday photo shoots.

In my humble opinion, any cake could be a smash cake as long as it has some type of icing (butter cream is best according to some photographers), since it will just be smashed anyway! But that is just me and my kuripot self. There is of course nothing wrong if you order custom made ones from your favorite cake maker, or buy from your favorite bakeshop so that in case the baby does not even want to smash it then you can still bring the cake home and eat it with the rest of the familia.

My kids got theirs from bakeshops near our house, I just made sure that their respective cakes match the photoshoot theme of their birthday. Of course I still chose the bakeshop that sells yummy cakes so that we can still bring home the remains of the smash cake that was not too messed up (I know to some of you this is a yucky thought, haha).

Anyway for those of you who are wondering where to order smash cakes for your baby in the Philippines, here is a list of —

Where to order Smash Cakes in the Philippines:

1. Supermarket Bakeshops – Every grocery that I frequent to has a grocery bakeshop, where you can buy affordable cakes in different sizes. They may not taste as great as the cakes from specialty or mainstream cake shops but it will definitely serve the purpose of just getting smashed! Prices can start at P125.00 for a small one, and they usually have simple designs and happy colors. Supermarkets that have grocery bakeshops include S & R, Rustan’s, Shopwise, SM Supermarkets, and the now (sadly) burnt Shoppersville Bakeshop.

S & R has their own Cake Decorating Station in Alabang. (Photo taken from S & R’s FB Page)

2. Mainstream Bakeshops – Bakeshops like Red Ribbon and Goldilocks are bakeshops that can deliver generic cakes to your home which can be used as smash cakes. They have enough branches that dot every part of the metro so you can also drive by as needed. Fortune Bakeshop is also yet another bakeshop that sells affordable but nice cakes that can also be used for this purpose. If you want something custom-made then you can also order from them. Prices of round cakes at Red Ribbon start at 330.00 for a small round cake, while a standard round greeting cake from Goldilocks start at P400.00 but they have a cute Rainbow Cake that costs P520.00.

3. Specialty Bakeshops – These are the cake shops that we love to order from whenever there’s a celebration in the family. So why not hit two birds with one stone by ordering from your favorite cake shop, use it for the smash cake photoshoot, and eat what is left of it if it did not get smashed Bakeshops that I can suggest include: Purple Oven (Chocolate campfire smash cake, anyone?), Estrel’s (dainty and yummy for your little one’s first birthday), Conti’s (No, not the mango bravo – sayang – the Strawberry Shortcake I think would look cute for a strawberry shortcake-themed birthday photoshoot!), The Chocolate Kiss (All White Devil’s Food Cake as against a very nice outdoor background perhaps?), Miss Polly’s (Brown Derby could be a great choice) and many more. Go shoot, then go eat!

4. J. Cuppacakes – Makes super adorable, and delicious cakes which can be used as smash cakes for your baby. You can choose from their suggested line-up or order a custom made one! They have a shop in SM Jazz, Makati along Jupiter and N. Garcia, and they have a kiosk in SM Megamall. Here’s a link to their FB Page.

Kiddie parties can be stressful in general, and it is always a good thing if the whole family can just book a venue altogether, choose a theme, cake and decor and even lootbag and just come back on your child’s birthday.

Even better is that parents can usually just sit back or focus on entertaining the guests and have fun too while the restaurant crew takes care of everything from the food, the serving, the hosting and the games, and then most important of all — the clean up! They can even load all the gifts your kids got plus left overs to your car.

So before i get carried away, here’s a list of Philippine restaurants and fastfood chains that have kiddie birthday party packages.

Fastfood and Restaurants with kiddie birthday party packages:

1. Mc Donald’s — There’s always a special place in the heart of a child (and a child at heart) for the Happy Meal! Most parties i have attended in McDo are simply fun and enjoyable — they have quite entertaining party hosts too! Check out their food packages here. As of publication of this post they have the following themes: Ben 10, AdventureTime, Winx, and Spongebob Squarepants. Their party meals range from P150-190 per guest, and the party package inclusions are: Use of Party Room, Full Hosting, Party amenities, Games and 30 prizes, 1 gift for the celebrant, an appearance by Grimace, Hamburglar or Birdie.

2. Jollibee — most toddlers know Ja’bee and who wouldn’t recognize the big red bee that dances in the kiddie parties? The good news is you can do the booking, the choosing, and the paying online so there is less hassle especially for moms who just can leave their home or work. They have four themes as of posting and this includes Hello Kitty, Jollitown, Jollibee’s FUN-Tastic Factory, and then their Christening- themed party. Party fee starts at P1500 with a minimum guests of up to 30 pax. Here is a link to their online party booking page.

3. Burger king – Does not offer an outright kiddie party package but for P10,000.00 worth of meals you can already use a part of their restaurant as your party venue. This is perfect for moms who want to have flexible party arrangements, and would like to go the DIY route. Check out their FB page here.

It is a challenge to have children eat salads especially if they are not used to eating veggies. But there are salads out there that appeal to our children’s discriminating taste buds.

So for those of you wanting to prepare nutritious salads for your family here are some suggested —

Kid-Friendly Vegetable Salads:

  1. Crunchy Fish and Mandarin Orange Salad – This is very easy to make, just buy some lettuce greens – assortment of iceberg and romaine perhaps? And then slice some tomatoes, pre-cooked fish fillet cubes in panko breading, and then add some mandarin oranges. Drizzle some Asian dressing with a dollop of Japanese Mayo and you’ve got a wonderful salad they will surely enjoy!
  2. Happy Kani Salad – Grate some fresh cucumbers to make some thin pasta-like strands. Deconstruct some original Japanese Crabstick or Kani. Toss in some thinly sliced carrots and drizzle the same Asian-Japanese mayo dressing and you’ve got some happy Kani Salad your kid will enjoy.

You may also want to read:

  1. Chicken Caesar Salad – This is another easy to prepare recipe. If you are short of time you can use left over chicken (left-over roasted chicken is great), but if you want to go the extra mile you can pan-fry chicken fingers in panko breading. Toss in some greens. Toast some croutons, and drizzle in your favorite Caesar Dressing. Shave some parmesan cheese on top, and if you have some bacon bits then that will be more appetizing.
  2. Bacon and Potato Salad – OK this one is not really very healthy because of the Bacon but if you have access to leaner ones, or Turkey Bacon for instance then it will be great! Plus this is another way to get them to eat their potatoes without having to fry them! Just boil some potatoes until fork tender. Add in crunchy pan fried bacon that has been diced. Add in some chopped spring onions or chives and then toss in some lite mayonnaise. You may or may not add in grated cheese to up the kid-friendliness factor.
  3. Yummy Chef’s Salad – Boil some eggs and cut into wedges or if you have quail eggs, just pre boil and peel. Add in some cubed cheese, tomatoes, diced ham, sliced black olives, grape wedges, turnips, bell peppers, and then lay in a bed of salad greens (crunchy ice berg lettuce is the best for this greens for this. Drizzle some thousand island dressing and serve.

Looking for yummy, healthy and affordable packed snacks? Here are some Snack Baon Ideas for Pre-schoolers. (Photo Credits)

With merely two weeks before the opening of classes, we moms should be armed with a good repertoire of nutritious snack or baon ideas for pre-schoolers.

If you are still clueless as to what to pack for your child this coming school year, then this post is for you. So here are –

Snack Baon ideas for Pre-Schoolers

  1. Muffins – Muffins are a great source of energy for your child, and a yummy way to ease hunger pangs at the middle of her school day. Choose freshly baked muffins over those pre-packed in the groceries. You will never go wrong with the many flavors you can choose from – blueberry, choco-chip, banana, corn, and more. Donut shops, and bread bakeries usually have freshly baked muffins that can last for a good 3-4 days. The French Baker’s Mini Muffins are just perfect to be paired with a small carton of milk!
  2. Banana Bread – These are soft, yummy and its scent is just so enticing to eat. You can bake one from scratch if you are the type who likes to bake, or you can buy from a store. Slice it up, and pack with fresh calamansi juice or whatever fresh juice you have! Purple Oven has super yummy banana bread so visit their outlet nearest you!

  1. One Whole banana and Cheese Sticks or Cheese cubes — Those little tummies will surely enjoy peeling their own banana, and eating it alongside cheese cubes. This is so easy to prepare too and are both likely on your weekly grocery list so there’s no need to make a special stop elsewhere.
  2. Carrot Loaf Slices – Are perfect yummy treats, especially when it has a dollop of cream cheese frosting! But even without it, it is still an interesting baon and yummy treat especially when paired with a favorite drink like Yakult or Dutchmill.
  3. Fruit Cup – It may sound simple, but this sure will be enjoyed by your toddler especially if in a semi-frozen state! When snack time comes, the fruit cup will still be chilled or cold enough to be enjoyed. Just slice into cubes any fruit available in your home like melons, bananas, grapes, apple or pears, squeeze some calamansi to avoid browning or oxidation, and add some light syrup if you wish.
  4. PB & J Sandwich – Cut into small triangles, this is just perfect for those little hands! Just remove the corners of your usual loaf bread, spread with peanut butter an your kid’s favorite fruit jam flavor and you’ve got a super easy baon to pack! You can actually pack them any type of sandwich — check out some spread here >>> Yummy Sandwich Recipes for Baon
  5. Corn on the Cob and some Veggie Sticks – Make sure that the corn on the cob is halved or chopped in thirds. Your preschooler will surely enjoy chomping on this. Take the nutrition up another notch by packing it alongside some veggie sticks with dip! Slice into sticks some carrots, turnips, and cucumber, and then pack with a plain yogurt with grated cheese dip! Always a hit.

So there you have it, I hope I have helped you in some way to decide on the snack or baon to pack for your preschooler. If you are looking for nice lunch boxes you may check this out.

School days are almost here again, so whether it is your child’s first time to go to school, or he is already a grade schooler, it is important to establish a good sleeping routine at this point. Here are some tips on how to get kids to sleep early. (Photo Credits)

Only about more than two weeks to go before classes start, and this would only mean, our school-aged children would have to start sleeping early once again.

If your child’s bedtime schedule did not change because of the summer vacation, then lucky you. But if your family is like most families then the time to go back to regular school day bedtime schedule should begin now.

Two weeks is a good lead time to deal with protests, requests for an additional 30 minute extension to play or watch their favorite show, and generally to reset their body clocks. So what is the ideal bedtime for kids, well most families have their kids sleep between 8:00 and 9:00 PM. Personally, I put my children to sleep by seven in the evening to give me time for chores, some downtime with the mister, and generally to rest from a long day of parenting and homemaking (and writing for this blog too!). Having them on an early bedtime saves my sanity, and although they wake up really early, I am generally happy that I have become a morning person because of this schedule. I did find some great articles on Sleeping Guide Mattress Website which gave me a few tips and tricks to make sure I get plenty of rest during the night. I was bit surprised but once I adjusted my schedule and habits and gave some time, I can say that those tips were very handy!

So for parents out there, here are some tips on

How to get kids to sleep early:

  1. Slowly ease into an early sleep schedule. Children usually hate surprises, so the best thing to do at this point is to start making their bedtime early by 30-minute pockets until you reach their desired bedtime. They will definitely protest being asked to sleep by 7:30 when they are used to sleep till 9 in the evening.
  2. Engage them in physical activities. Allow your children to play outside, run around, sweat, and do sports. Physical activities will make them yearn for rest. In my experience, swimming wears out little bodies real well, so if you have an access to a pool, allow them to enjoy the water!

  1. No sweets two hours before bedtime. If you allow your children to have sweets, especially chocolates, discourage them from eating two to three hours before bedtime. This also applies to chocolate drinks. Sweets, especially caffeine-laced chocolates keep them alert, making it hard for them to snooze early.
  2. Have a Quiet Time. Avoid visual stimulation two hours before bedtime too. This means, TVs and Gadgets (if you allow them some gadget time) should be turned off as well two hours before their intended bedtime. This is because the visual and mental stimulation they get from TV and gadgets bombard their senses, making it hard for them to calm down and relax.
  3. Get back into your bedtime routine. If you do not have something like this, then now is the time to establish one. It is as simple as bath time or a wash-up before bed, tooth brush, changing into PJs, story-telling and then nightly prayers. Your child’s mind will somehow be programmed that he or she needs to sleep when you start doing the routine, and then ease into it.
  4. Lights Out. There is nothing like zero stimulation that will make the kids sleepy. Turn of all the lights if possible. No TV, no sounds. And avoid tinkering with your gadget while making your child sleep. If your room will need a black out curtain like this, then buy one (you can do so here). If your child will demand that a night light be turned on, then go with that, but only a night light. Buy night lights here.
  5. Make it comfy. Make sure that your child’s room, or wherever he sleeps in is comfortable enough to induce sleep. If you have air conditioning, turn it on for your child, if none then make him or her wear comfortable clothes, and make sure there is a fan in the room, and the windows are open (with the screens closed of course). Here are some air conditioning deals you may want to check out – which can be on a cash on delivery basis, delivered right into your home. Some can even be bought by installment – check it out here.
  6. Do not let them sleep in too late. Allowing your kids to sleep in until 10 in the morning, will just give them more energy to sleep in later in the evening. Encourage them to wake up early by giving them activities and preparing a great breakfast. Here are some happy breakfast ideas you may want too check out.

So there you have it. Better start early instead of two to three days before classes start.

If you have the time, hope you could drop by my Facebook page and hit the like button, so you can receive regular updates from Happypinaymommy.com direct on your newsfeed.

Aircon-free ways to keep babies and kids cool this summer

Looking for Aircon-free ways to keep babies and kids cool this summer? Mommy Rita keeps Baby Ethan cool by allowing him to splash in his inflatable pool. (Thanks Mommy Rita for allowing us to use Baby Ethan’s Photo here!)

The sweltering heat has been the concern of everyone nowadays, and most moms are looking for strategies to cool their babies amid the intense summer heat.

My little shobe is having a hard time outdoors nowadays as anytime she is out of the house or the car, she does not only sweat beads and beads of perspiration — she sweats profusely you’d think she just came out of the shower!

But our little ones cannot just stay inside air-conditioned areas the whole summer! They still need to get out, and get active. At the same time, we parents should also have a respite from the sky-rocketing electric bills the summer brings. So–

Here are 10 Aircon-free ways to keep babies and kids cool this summer:

  1. Do not be afraid to strip them of their clothes! Those cute cloth diapers do not have adorable prints for nothing! Just make sure you have applied a safe anti-mosquito repellent on their skin before heading outdoors. Young kids on the other hand can just wear mesh-fabric or “aircon” sandos and light cotton shorts.

    2.  Bring out the pool or the batya. Not everyone has an access to a home pool or swimming pool in their clubhouse but every home has a batya! Set it up, bring out some bath toys and let them splash away! Just make sure to still use some baby sun screen on them, and that you or someone you trust watches them closely. Babies can drown even in small amounts of water.

3. Bring out the popsicles. Whether it is a breastmilk popsicle or a fresh fruit popsicle or even store-bought ones, your little darling will surely enjoy the freezing coolness of this treat! Do you have an older child? Why not take it even a notch higher by making old-fashioned ice candy with your little love?

4. Hydrate! Make sure your littles drink up water and have unlimited access to your milk! This will ensure they are adequately hydrated, and the sweat they release is replaced and body fluids are replenished.

5. Frozen fruit for dessert. Skip the carb-filled cakes and meryendas and give your children frozen cut up fruits. Melons, pineapples, bananas, avocados, watermelons are perfect for freezing.

6. Cold water spray. Remember the Evian brumisateur? Make a homemade and baby-friendly version by just using cold water from the ref in a recycled pocket sprayer, and spray on to your little one to freshen her up. For you mama, you can use this recipe.

6. Fresh Juice Galore. If your baby or child is old enough to appreciate juices then you might want to serve them ice cold fresh juices like fresh buko juice, calamansi juice, dalandan juice, melon juice, and the like. Young kids will also enjoy almost-frozen smoothies using fresh bananas, mangoes, strawberries, avocados and the like. The milk or yogurt component will also help up their calcium consumption for the day!

7. Cold compresses. Freeze wet wash cloth, and offer it to your child when he or she feels too warm for comfort. Perfect areas for the compress include the neck and nape area.

8. Ask the pedi. Ask your pediatrician‘s advice if you can use baby powder on your child at least to help keep too much sweating at bay.

9. Multiple baths. As long as it is quick, there is nothing wrong with bathing your baby two to three times a day, especially before nap and bed time.

10. Get Native! Serve native icy Filipino coolers to your babies and kids, just go easy on the sugar. They will surely enjoy Mais Con Hielo, Halo-Halo, Saba con Hielo, and even Buco Pandan, or the usual Fiesta Fruit salad.

So there you have it I am sure there are other ways to cool babies and kids this summer without having to use the A/C. I promise to update this post as soon as I get to discover more. Hope you could drop by my Facebook page and hit the like button, so you can receive regular updates from Happypinaymommy.com direct on your newsfeed.

Thank you so much!

I am not a really creative mom, and I have taken steps to learn bento making, but I really, really have a long way to go. Anyway, here is a list of —

They usually have branches in Robinson’s Malls, but their store in Galleria is really a fun branch to check out.

Are you looking for kiddie bikes in the Philippines? (Photo Credits)

If you are planning to buy a kiddie bicycle for your child then this post is for you.

Bikes may be expensive so it is very much understandable if parents will look for an affordable but high quality alternative to those sold in malls and toy stores.

Where to buy cheap but good quality kiddie bikes in the Philippines:

  1. Cartimar — apart from pets and PX goods (pardon the dated term!), you can find imported and local kiddie bikes in the many stalls in this Pasay landmark. My Kuya Billy strongly recommends Cristy’s Bike Shop. Alternatively, you may also wanna check out Paulina’s Bike Shop.
  2. Quiapo — I was surprised to see many baby trikes and kiddie bicycles in this area particularly opposite the road where Quiapo church is or the Espana-bound side. The bikes look just like those that are sold in big supermarkets like the Hypermart or Shopwise. It is super cheap too!

(Post Continued Below)

================================================================

You May also Want to Read:

==================================================================

  1. Second-hand stores — if you don’t mind buying a second hand bike or trike for your kid then check out your neighborhood Japan surplus stores because they will surely have two to three in stock. If you do not see one around your neighborhood and you leave in QC then head to Araneta Center particularly where the old Rustan’s is and you will see this Japan surplus store that has kiddie bikes and trikes along with the other baby gears that they sell. Word of caution though — thoroughly clean and recondition the bike first and conduct a thorough check up before giving it to your child.
  2. Neighborhood Bike Stores — I am pretty sure there is at least one in a Major thoroughfare nearest your home and such shops are worth checking out especially if you do not want to be trapped in traffic going to Quiapo or Cartimar. They may be not as cheap but obviously the bikes and trikes they sell are more affordable versus the ones sold in the mall.
  3. Lazada — buying a bike may be a hassle especially if you will just use public transportation to take it home. Why not buy it online instead and since most may be more than Php1,000.00 you can get free shipping from Lazada. If you got it cheaper and you gotta pay for shipping — the cost could just be the same or even less especially if you’d have to take a cab to bring the bike home. Check out this kiddie bike for your little girl –buy it here and this bike for your little boy — buy it here. They also have baby trikes buy it here.
  4. Online shops –OLX has a long list of second hand and brand new bike sellers. You just have to be discerning in your purchase, and be more cautious as some sellers do not have an online store where you can do follow ups if ever. Then there also are other online sellers that are worth checking out:
  • Mars kingdom bikes — has kidide bicycles starting at P2200.00. Check out their FB shop here.
  • Strider No Pedal Balance Bikes – Well I have seen this bike in action, and Achi liked it a lot. They usually do demos where families converge outdoors, so one time, we chanced upon the. It is a little bit pricey, but I think my kid had fun. Here is a link to their website.

So, there you have it. I am sure there are other bike shops where you can buy cheap but good quality bicycle for kids in the Philippines. Again, i did not include the bike shops in Home Depot Ortigas (Al Terra), in BGC, Toys R Us, or Toy Kingdom, and other mall-based bicycle stores simply because the subject of this post is CHEAP but good quality bikes. I am pretty sure they give discounts but since we are talking about cheap all year round, hence the above list.

I will be updating this post as I discover more. Do not forget that along with the bike, purchase safety gears which include helmet, elbow pads, knee pads as well as good quality sneakers and reflectors. Brief your child about what he or she can do and what she cannot, along with other safety measures in riding a bicycle. More importantly, close supervision is the key. Bike with your kid. One of my fondest childhood memories included me and my dad’s regular Sunday cycling around our neighborhood!

Anyway, before I get carried away, here is hoping that if you have the time, hope you could drop by my Facebook page and hit the like button, so you can receive regular updates from Happypinaymommy.com direct on your newsfeed.

Of course go there on a weekend or you’ll get trapped in epic Makati traffic — unless you live just around the area. The Festival of Lights has started already and will run until January 4, 2016. The shows start from 6PM in 30 minute intervals until 10 in the evening. Here is a link to their official website.

2. Policarpio Street, Mandaluyong — if your tot is fond of lights, drive through this street one weekend and she will be super happy — guaranteed. It has long been a tradition in this neighborhood to deck their halls – and lawns – and gardens — and everything actually during Christmas time. No entrance, so free and sans expenses again!!! Here is a great site that will teach you how to get there.

4. The COD Christmas Show –– Grew up watching this in its original mall in Cubao! Yes the COD Christmas on Display show where my Mama used to bring us. It has been in Greenhills for years now and gladly continues to be one of the free Christmas attractions for children to see on Christmas time.

7. UPDATED: 12/14/2015 Meralco Liwanag Park — How could i forget about this free pasyalan when we have visited this a couple of times over the years? It is a fun pasyalan which will surely thrill your kids as they can run around the area. There is no trouble finding a parking spot because the main headquarters of Meralco has enough parking spaces after office hours. Your kids will surely enjoy the free mini-train ride, the gigantic nativity scene, the copper-wire sculptures that are so huge. There is also a night bazaar. The Liwanag Park is open to the public until January 6, 2015 (except December 18 in view of the Meralco Corporate Christmas Party), and is open from 6:00pm to 10:00pm during weekdays, and 6:00pm to 11:00pm during weekends.
