Daily devotional: Baywatch

The show Baywatch was one of the most popular TV shows when I was growing up. It featured lifeguards rescuing drowning beach goers, responding to beachside emergencies, as well as the side stories about the daily lives of the life guards. It was entertaining, and I often ask my Dad if there were lifeguards like that on our country’s beaches. To my young mind, it must be great to know that someone is looking out for you apart from your loved ones.

Followers of Jesus like us, are assured that there indeed is someone watching over us. A God who is sovereign, a God who is both merciful and just, and an Everlasting Father who is both gracious and loving.

“Before they call I will answer; while they are yet speaking I will hear.” Isaiah 65:24

We all need someone who will rescue us. While at one point we may need physical help or rescue, and God provides that help through His people, what we need more is spiritual rescuing.

We need someone to help us out of the troubles that we created ourselves, the guilt and shame that keeps us from moving forward, and the dark pit of grief and depression that could envelop us. And gladly, our King of Kings has provided this for us.

“Because of the tender mercy of our God, by which the rising sun will come to us from heaven to shine on those living in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the path of peace.” Luke 1:78-79

If Christmas passed without you knowing and feeling what it truly means, then it is never too late to raise your hand and be rescued. Jesus came to our world, and became one of us to demonstrate God’s love for us and personally rescue us from the sinful life that we are living.

Our sins have plunged us into really bad and unavoidable consequences, and if we surrender our lives to Jesus, we can finally come back to God and get rid of the guilt and shame that has been keeping us in the dark. While we may still suffer the natural consequences of our bad choices, we will have God’s peace in our heart. We can start living a new life, as a renewed person. We can stop that downward spiral that plummets us to more sins and even graver consequences.

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” 2 Corinthians 5:17

So if you are drowning in a sea of sins and misery, there is still hope. He has come to rescue you. And it does not matter even if you think that you have had too many Christmases and still you haven’t finally realized the message it brings. Our Lord and Savior is relentless in finding the lost, and those who need rescue. Allow Him to take you back in His arms, so that you can finally receive God’s peace.

“For thus says the Lord God: Behold, I, I myself will search for my sheep and will seek them out. As a shepherd seeks out his flock when he is among his sheep that have been scattered, so will I seek out my sheep, and I will rescue them from all places where they have been scattered on a day of clouds and thick darkness.” Ezekiel 34:11-12

It is never too late to start growing your faith. Dedicate the first moments of the day with Him in prayer. Read and reflect on the Bible, either through a physical or online devotional and its counterpart bible reading, or by starting with the gospel of John. Ensure that you go to church weekly, and spend time with other believers in learning more about Him through bible study and fellowship.

As you build your relationship with Jesus Christ, you will slowly realize that you are living the abundant life that He has promised. A life that God has blessed with what money cannot buy, and what the world cannot take away: God’s presence and guidance, meaningful moments with loved ones and friends, deep sense of contentment and security, and the knowledge that you are at peace with God.

“Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and will not be afraid; for the Lord God is my strength and my song, and he has become my salvation.” Isaiah 12:2

Thank you for reading through our devotional today. I invite you to
ponder on Ephesians 2:8-9 and Psalm 41:1-3 to dig deeper on today’s topic.

Reflection Question: Do you need God’s rescue?

Conversation with the Lord: Heavenly Father, thank you for coming for us. Thank you for sending Your only Begotten Son to us so that we can get reconciled with you. Please grant me the grace to live a life of worship, and that I could help others get to know you too. Amen.
