Daily devotional: Bionic Ears

Our sense of hearing, just like our sense of sight, degrades as we age. Age related hearing loss is considered a normal part of ageing especially as we reach mid-60s. And we may not think of it much, but losing our hearing will have an impact on our social life, and could even affect our safety as we will no longer be as sensitive to the dangers around us when our hearing starts to get impaired.

1 John 5:14
1 John 5:14

One thing is for sure though, that as present-day followers of Jesus, our Heavenly Father will always, always hear us. So we may lose our ability to hear, but we can trust that even when we grow old and our senses decline, we continue to have that line to heaven no matter what.

“I waited patiently for the Lord; he inclined to me and heard my cry. He drew me up from the pit of destruction, out of the miry bog, and set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure.” Psalm 40:1-2

And as long as we seek Him, we can rest assured that He hears our cries. We actually do not even have to say a word, because He knows what is in our hearts.

“Before they call I will answer; while they are yet speaking I will hear.” Isaiah 65:24

And so when we are bogged down and feeling trampled on all sides, all we need to do is to run to Him. We should choose to seek Him in both good times and bad, and He will come through for us. Even if our troubles are too deep that words cannot describe it, we can rest assured that our Heavenly Father hears and understands us.

“O Lord, you have searched me and known me! You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar. You search out my path and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways. Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O Lord, you know it altogether.” Psalm 139:1-4

And though we may feel sometimes that He is too far off to hear our pleas and respond to our prayers, scriptures guarantee that God will meet our needs, and He responds to us in His perfect time.

Hagar, the maidservant of Sarah and Abraham, who bore Abraham’s son Ishmael, was about to give up on her life and that of her son. She was about to watch Him die as they ran out of provisions in the wilderness. But the Angel of the Lord appeared to Hagar to calm her down and tell her that the Lord heard the boy’s cries.

“And God heard the voice of the boy, and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven and said to her, “What troubles you, Hagar? Fear not, for God has heard the voice of the boy where he is. Up! Lift up the boy, and hold him fast with your hand, for I will make him into a great nation.” Genesis 21:17-18

In our lowest moments, in the moments we feel too far from God, may we still have the confidence to reach out to Him and cast our anxieties upon Him. May we choose to depend on Him even if it seems He is not responding, and may we continue to trust in His love for us and the promises that He gave us. And as we wait on Him, may we continue towards the path He has laid for us, and choose to follow His ways.

“And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him. ” 1 John 5:14-15

Thank you for reading through our devotional today. I invite you to
ponder on Genesis 21:13-21 and Psalm 40:1-5 to dig deeper on today’s
topic.

Reflection Question: Do you sometimes feel that God does not hear you? How can you trust more on His promises and perfect timing as you wait on Him to respond to your cries for help?

Conversation with the Lord: Heavenly Father, thank you for assuring me that you hear me, and that you will move in your own perfect time. Give me the grace to wait on you, and the confidence to hold on to your promises. Amen.
