Daily devotional: Contribution

We all have those days when we feel like we are stuck in the mundane routine of motherhood. When we cannot do much other than cooking, caring for the kids and the home, and tackling endless piles of laundry. We are weighed down with thoughts that we cannot even contribute to the finances of our family, volunteer in church, or do something for our own personal growth. It can really be a bummer, especially when we know that there are years upon years up ahead of the same daily routine coupled with evolving yet mounting challenges on various fronts.

To the mom who feels like this at the moment,  sharing this wonderful quote from Author and American Pastor Andy Stanley: “Your greatest contribution in the world may not be something you do but someone you raise.”

Moms like us have a crucial role in shaping the future, because how we raise our children can have an impact in their future personal circles, and the society in general. Mundane as it seems, raising God-fearing children is the primary calling we all have as mothers. The Bible is very clear on this, because as soon as the Ten Commandments have been given to us, parents have been immediately tasked to teach their kids to live what it says.

“These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts.7 Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.” Deuteronomy 6:6-7

And so when we feel like we are not doing enough and are not accomplished enough, we should look back at what God has tasked us with. We should also recount how He designed families, and how we are to be the first and forever teachers of our children. Our efforts are not for naught, because as we take seriously our role of raising Christ-like humans, we get to make the world a better place.

Every effort we take to teach them to prioritize God and love and serve others, they get to develop character traits that will enable them to live an abundant life, be a conduit of God’s blessings, and become a productive member of the society,

“He will feed his flock like a shepherd; He will gather the lambs in His arms, and carry them in His bosom, and gently lead the mother sheep.” Isaiah 40:11

We may not be able to inflate our family savings, scale the career ladder, or become a distinguished church volunteer, but every day that we lead our family to Christ, we get to answer God’s foremost calling for us to make disciples.

“Those who think that a woman detained at home by her little family is doing nothing, think the reverse of what is true. Scarcely can the godly mother quit her home for a place of worship; but dream not that she is lost to the work of the church; far from it, she is doing the best possible service for her Lord. Mothers, the godly training of your offspring is your first and most pressing duty.” Charles Spurgeon

Thank you for reading through our devotional today. I invite you to ponder on Proverbs 13:24 and Proverbs 29:17  to dig deeper on today’s topic.

Reflection Question: Are there times when you feel like you are not doing anything significant other than raising your children and managing your household? How can a Chriist-centered parenting approach give you a different perspective to motherhood?

Conversation with the Lord: Heavenly Father, thank you for blessing me with the privilege of becoming a mother. Help me embrace the primary mission you gave me which is to raise my children into your likeness. Strengthen and empower me my Lord for this. Amen.
