Back in the era of landline phones, getting the direct line of a person whom you want to get hold of in an office meant a lot. It means not having to go through operators, and cutting waiting time. Getting in touch is indeed much easier when you have access to a direct line.
As followers of Jesus, we too have a direct access to our Lord, made possible by the sacrifice of our Savior Jesus Christ. Because of Him, we can face God, talk to Him, and even call on Him for help.
“Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.” Hebrews 4:16
Time and again, God has demonstrated His faithfulness to us by hearing us out each time we call. Countless Psalms of the great King David, alluded to God’s listening ear both during his times of joy and times of trouble.
“In my distress I called to the Lord; I cried to my God for help. From his temple he heard my voice; my cry came before him, into his ears.” Psalm 18:6
And just as God hears our praises and petitions, he also hears our rants. As the Israelites whined and grumbled about not having anything to eat in the wilderness, God heard them and rained Manna from heaven and gave them quails for meat.
“And Moses said, “When the Lord gives you in the evening meat to eat and in the morning bread to the full, because the Lord has heard your grumbling that you grumble against him—what are we? Your grumbling is not against us but against the Lord.” Exodus 16:8
While there is nothing to be proud of when we keep on complaining to God, we should be comforted by the thought that there is no prayer that is too small nor too big for God to hear.
Moving forward, we should mimic King David’s faith that indeed God listens to us no matter what. But of course like any normal conversation, we must take time to talk to Him first, intentionally, and not just briefly in our minds, or in the hushed whispers of our souls when we are troubled.
When we intentionally seek God through prayer, and reading and reflecting on scriptures, He promises to hear us.
“If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” 2 Chronicles 7:14
And while Him hearing us out does not automatically mean He will magically remove our troubles, our assurance that He listens means He will be with us through it all.
“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; And through the rivers, they shall not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned, Nor shall the flame scorch you.” Isaiah 43:2
Thank you for reading through our devotional today. I invite you to ponder on Philippians 4:6-7 and Psalm 34 to dig deeper on today’s topic.
Reflection Question: Do you utilize your direct line to God?
Conversation with the Lord: Heavenly Father, thank you for allowing us to have a direct line to you. Give me the confidence to continue running to you in prayer Lord, to worship and honor you, confess my sins, thank you for your blessings, and present my petitions to you. Amen.
