Whatever stage in life we are, we are bound to encounter instructions. Instructions on how to use things, instructions on how to manage something, or instructions on how to go about a procedure or a system we need to go through.
Chances are if we think we are already familiar with something, we might get tempted not to read the instructions. This is of course detrimental. But what’s even more dangerous is to read instructions, but not follow them.
The word of God is the same way. Our God speaks to us not only for us to hear His voice, but also for us to follow and be guided with His teachings and commands.
“God speaks not to be heard, but to be obeyed.” Priscilla Shirer, American Author
As present-day believers we should be familiar with God’s word, and live its principles. We also have to make it our guide in making both day-to-day and life-changing decisions.
We are to obey the parameters the Lord has set upon us, because these guidelines are the same measures that will ensure that we get to live the good life He has destined for us.
“Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise.” Matthew 7:24
And while God’s commands and teachings may seem extensive, and hard to fully obey at times, these rules are meant to lead us to the right path. They are not restrictive, instead they are life-giving and it illuminates our path.
“All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,” 2 Timothy 3:16
When we decide to faithfully follow God, and submit to His Word, we in effect jumpstart our process of sanctification.
“Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.” John 17:17
Like one of the prophets in the Old Testament, Jeremiah, we should take delight in God’s word enough to want to consume it. Enough to make it His source of hope and strength during dark times.
“Your words were found, and I ate them and your words became to me a joy and the delight of my heart, for I am called by your name.” Jeremiah 15:16
Thank you for reading through our devotional today. I invite you to ponder on Matthew 7:24-27 to dig deeper on today’s topic.
Reflection Question: Are you a follower of instructions? Have you heeded the life instructions in the Bible?
Conversation with the Lord: Lord Jesus Christ, thank you for the sanctifying power of your word. Please grant me the grace and courage to follow it all my life, so that I could live a life of obedience and worship to you. Amen.
