Daily Devotional, Oct 2, 2023 No Space for New Messages
"For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart." Hebrews 4:12
Back when mobile phones were new, and text messaging was a novelty, the term “no space for new messages” was a bummer for most cell phone users. It means that he is not able to receive new messages, and that he has to delete old messages.
While this is easy for some, sentimental people find it hard to erase from their inbox messages of their loved ones, among other texts that they find important. And while it is good to hold on to these things, being full of old messages means new ones cannot come in anymore. No more room for new information, possibly new loving messages, and of course good news.
Our hearts are similar to these phones. When it is full of the old memories, we find it hard to make new ones. Whether the memories are good or bad, we tend to limit ourselves to what we should be open to. Hopefully, we are not shunning the good news of our salvation because our hearts are full of worldly things that bring us happiness. (‘Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God’” Matthew 4:4)
Let us open our hearts to God’s messages of love, forgiveness, and redemption (“Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ “Romans 10:12). Being open to God’s messages means spending time reading and meditating on His words. This is done through intentional bible reading, self-reflection, bible studying with fellow believers, and Sunday worship (“You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about me,” John 5:39).
When we are open to God’s word, we allow the Lord to work in our lives, and we get the privilege to live out His purpose for us. The Book of Isaiah, Chapter 55 speaks about this, and one of its verses states that “So is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.” (Isaiah 55:11).
Let us all open our hearts to what God wants to tell us. Someone said that praying is us talking to God, and reading His word, is us listening to Him. Let us decide to take time in our busy lives to hear what God would want to tell us. We have been filling our minds and hearts with countless messages, most of which though would not matter in eternity.
Thank you for reading through our devotional today. I invite you to ponder on Isaiah 55:6-11 to dig deeper on today’s topic.
Reflection Question: Have you heard what the Lord has to say to you today?
Conversation with the Lord: Almighty Father, open my mind and heart to your daily messages, so that I could abide in you and live your purpose in my life. Amen.
