“Truth Hurts” is a popular expression commonly used when someone gives a hurtful yet helpful advice or plain statement to someone who may be unaware of his own character flaw, or is consciously avoiding the truth about an aspect of his life. While it is indeed painful, if the truth was said with all sincerity and the best intentions, it can help the person improve his own character, outlook, and even life situation.
The Bible contains true words that may offend us, but will always guide us into the right path. The statements are meant to help us reflect on what we have done, and have been doing. Convict us of our sins, and push us toward repentance. As the Apostle Paul tells us:
“For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” Hebrews 4:12
One of the harsh truths that can be found in the bible is that forgiving those who have wronged us is not optional. That as long as the offender is truly sorry, we should forgive him.
And while it may hurt us to know or finally realize that what we have been doing all along is not aligned with God’s will, it should at least push us to strive to know Jesus more, and walk in His ways. This way, we could build a better personal relationship with Him, a relationship that will set us free.
In Jesus’ own words, when we abide in His teachings, we will know the truth and it will set us free.
“So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:31-32
When we make Jesus’ words as our permanent guiding principle in life, then we will be set free from sin, guilt, shame, and the dictates of a worldly society. We will have inner peace and a deep sense of contentment, even in the face of inevitable difficulties we face in life.
“Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.” Philippians 4:9
When we are assured of the truth that God wants only the best for us, and that His commandments are meant to help us live life abundantly, we will experience the joys of living a life that honors God and serves others. When we know in our heart that God has only the best plans for our life, we will be assured of the truth that no season of our life is wasted, even if it means dealing with life challenges.
“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who[a] have been called according to his purpose.” Romans 8:28
Moreover, God’s word is very useful and powerful. It helps us to know God’s will, tells us when we have committed sins and how we can rectify it. It also guides us how we can stop committing such sins, and then it will help us teach others, like our own children for example, the truths that we have learned.
“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God[a] may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” 2 Timothy 3:16-17
