Selfless love does not always have to mean literally dying for someone. It could also mean simple acts of unselfish care towards other people who cannot return the favor. It is a genuine show of concern, motivated by our love for God and our desire to please Him by loving others as He commanded us.
When we put other people’s needs ahead of ours even if we do not have to, and give them time even if we’d have to be elsewhere, that’s selfless love too. The exact same love Jesus has called us to show to others.
“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” John 13:34-45
We can never get back the time we spend with others. In today’s world that equates to laying our lives for a brother, a friend, an acquaintance, or even a random person. When we choose to serve others although we are tired, and choose their comfort over our convenience, that is loving like Jesus.
“My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” John 15:12-13
It may take effort, it may take more time, it may entail our own comfort and convenience, but when we set our sights on following Jesus, following His example is exactly the way we should go.
