Daily devotional: The Bulging Baby Bag

One of the most common tell-tale signs of a first-time mom is having a
humongous baby bag. Be it an airplane ride, a monthly check-up, or a
mall stroll, THE DIAPER BAG will always be filled to the brim, with
everything and anything the baby will need. And it is understandable,
every parent wants to anticipate what her infant might need, and she
has to be ready for that to ensure her basic needs are met, and she
remains comfortable and happy.

Our Heavenly Father is a first time parent bajillion times over for
each of us, and yet He is just so gracious, loving, and tender-hearted
that He has anticipated everything that we will ever need.

Open to the first page of the Bible and you will see there that the
manner God created our universe and everything on it is ordered to
ensure that all needs will be met. The story is encapsulated in a
wonderful Psalm, which praises all His wonderful work:

“He makes springs pour water into the ravines; it flows between the
mountains. They give water to all the beasts of the field; the wild
donkeys quench their thirst. The birds of the sky nest by the waters;
they sing among the branches. He waters the mountains from his upper
chambers; the land is satisfied by the fruit of his work.
He makes grass grow for the cattle, and plants for people to
cultivate— bringing forth food from the earth.” Psalm 104:10-14

And so what does this say to us? Whenever we feel like we lack
something, and we struggle for our needs to be met, we should read the
Bible’s page one all over again. There we will realize God’s
sovereignty and omniscience. He knows everything enough that He will
never create a need that will never be met.

He created light, and water before He created plants. He created
plants first, so that animals can be nourished. He made all these
before He created man, so that man can cultivate plants for food,  use
trees for shelter, access streams for water, and care for livestock.

“Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so
that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky,
over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the
creatures that move along the ground.” Genesis 1:26

It is just so touching to note that just like a first-time mom who
tries to pack in everything her baby will ever need, our Everlasting
Father makes sure we will have access to the essentials. Even the
strength that will power us to do our part in gathering our
necessities, our loving God joyfully provides.

“But remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the
ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he
swore to your ancestors, as it is today.” Deuteronomy 8:18

And like any loving parent, our tender-hearted Heavenly Father also
wants to make us feel joyful. He blesses us beyond what we need,
because like human parents, He also loves giving surprises and gifts.

“He makes grass grow for the cattle, and plants for people to
cultivate— bringing forth food from the earth: wine that gladdens
human hearts, oil to make their faces shine, and bread that sustains
their hearts.” Psalm 104:14-15

And while the Lord will never sacrifice our character development and
spiritual maturity just to make us happy, He is  just so great a
Father that everything He gives us — and does not give us — will
always be for our greater good.

“If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your
children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good
things to those who ask him!” Matthew 7:11

Thank you for reading through our devotional today. I invite you to
ponder on Psalm 104 to dig deeper on today’s topic.

Reflection Question: Do you feel God’s generosity in your life today?
What are the three top of mind blessings you are thankful for today?

Conversation with the Lord: Heavenly Father, thank you for
anticipating everything that I will ever need, and making sure that
all these are for my own good. Help me fully trust in your sovereignty
and everlasting love. Amen.
