In a world that is fascinated with Big Ideas, execution and details seem to be an after-thought. In reality though, anything noteworthy and successful will never be so if not for the little details that make up the event, the product, the service.
As present-day followers of Jesus, it is reassuring to know that our Mighty, Sovereign God, who created the whole universe, is a God who is concerned with details. Imagine the differences in the shade of colors of living creatures, the difference in the sound each animal makes. Take His instructions about the Tabernacle as written in the Old Testament. The same with our lives, He has planned everything and therefore He is concerned with all the things.
“Moreover you shall make the tabernacle with ten curtains of fine woven linen and blue, purple, and scarlet thread; with artistic designs of cherubim you shall weave them.” Exodus 26:1
So what does this mean to us? It means that we can pray to Him for both big and small things. That He is interested even in the tiniest details of our lives and is happy to be so. That is why He calls on us to spend time with Him, and tell Him about our days, our hopes, our thoughts about Him, and even our littlest fears and anxieties.
“Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me.” Revelation 3:20
And so if Jesus Himself knocks at our door as the above passage says, then He is more than willing to listen to anything we have to say. He wants to spend time with us to have a meal with us and listen to any detail of our life we would like to share with Him.
This means that there is no prayer too small, or supplication too big that he cannot handle or give time to. He is the God that heals both fever and cancer. He is the God that provides us what we eat everyday, and the same One that helps us overcome major financial difficulties. He is the God that protects us from all terrifying troubles, and He is the same Lord who could help us get that parking spot when we are hurrying up to attend our child’s first ever school program. He is the same Lord that hears our prayers about our failing marriage, and He is the same God that listens to our hopes of finding new friends in the new city we moved into. He is the God of details.
“O Lord, you have searched me and known me! You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar. You search out my path and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways. Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O Lord, you know it altogether.” Psalm 139:1-4
A good story that could demonstrate this loving truth is Jesus turning water into wine in a Wedding in Cana. This is Jesus’ first public miracle, and as one great preacher says, He could have chosen to resurrect a dead person as His first miracle so that He will instantly become famous. But no, in the Wedding at Cana, Jesus in a way tells us that He is also concerned even with non-life threatening concerns. That He wants us to celebrate, and be truly happy.
“When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does this have to do with me? My hour has not yet come.” His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” Now there were six stone water jars there for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water.” And they filled them up to the brim. And he said to them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the feast.” So they took it.” John 2:3-8
If we will only take the time to know Jesus more, we will realise that He is truly invested in the tiny details of our lives and is happy to be so. Open that door, and lead Him into your heart.
Talk to Him everyday in your quiet time, tell Him everything, and thank Him for all things. Say sorry for the things you have done that may have displeased Him and pray for the grace to overcome these sins. Tell Him what His presence means to your life.
Listen to what He has to say by reading and reflecting on His words. If you do not know where to start, then start at the Gospel of John in the New Testament. Praise and worship Him every Sunday with other believers, and seek Him alongside His other followers. Let Jesus into your heart.

“The Lord your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing.” Zephaniah 3:17

Reflection Question: Do you see God’s hand in the little details of your everyday life?
Conversation with the Lord: Heavenly Father, thank you for being Sovereign and Mighty yet, truly tender-hearted enough to care about every little concern that we have. Give us the grace to continue seeking you and nurturing a close relationship with you. Give us the confidence to come to you for both big and small concerns, and thank you for both the tiny and the huge blessings. Amen.
