Daily devotional: The Nanny Cam

Back when I was a first-time mom and a full-time employee, I decided to install CCTV in our house so that I could monitor my then eldest child and her nanny while I was at the office. The nanny I came to hire did not have issues about having a camera in her workplace because she was a diligent and caring domestic employee.

2 Chronicles 16:9
2 Chronicles 16:9

She did not feel like her privacy was being intruded upon because she was aware of her job, and my concerns as her employer, and mom of her ward. And because of her good performance and disposition, I gave her a salary raise after a period of time.

Present-day believers like us can feel a lot of assurance as we hold on to the thought that our God is the God who sees. A sovereign King who is not just aware of everything that is happening under His watch, He is also perceptive of the feelings and thoughts of everyone.

“And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account.” Hebrews 4:13

The Bible tells us that as the Lord sees everything that we do, and perceives everything we think and feel. He also rewards our faithfulness and efforts at pleasing Him and serving others.

Unlike a surveillance cam out to catch bad deeds like shoplifting, or other crimes, the Lord’s eyes dart to and from the whole earth to note our obedience and good deeds.

“Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.” 1 Corinthians 15:58

The truth that He sees everything should also assure us that whenever we encounter hardships and difficulties in life, He will see us and help us in His own time, and in His own way.

“For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to give strong support to those whose heart is blameless toward him.” 2 Chronicles 16:9

And when we come across people who try to bad mouth us, bring up our past that God has already forgiven, and criticize our efforts to please the Lord, we should also hold on to the truth that our God is the God who sees. He sees not just what we do, but also what we think and what our motives are. And as long as our conscience is clear, then like a hardworking and honest employee, we have nothing to worry about.

“Keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander.” 1 Peter 3:16

Thank you for reading through our devotional today. I invite you to ponder on Proverbs 5:21-23 and Psalm 139:1-12 to dig deeper on today’s topic.

Reflection Question: Do you feel comfort knowing that God sees everything that you do?

Conversation with the Lord: Heavenly Father, thank you for assuring me that your eyes are on me. Give me the confidence to continue holding on to this truth so I can endure hardships, and continue living a life that honors you. Amen.
