Daily devotional: The Octopus

One of the icebreaker questions in a parenting seminar sought to ask what superpower the participants wanted to have. A good number of moms answered that they wanted to have extra pairs of hands so that they could simultaneously do their jobs, chores, and attend to the needs of all their children at the same time.

And who can blame the mothers who would like to have more than one pair of hands? With the many things that needs to be done at home, at work, and with the children, one pair seems to be not enough.

But no matter how much we wish we could have all those extra pairs of hands; we could still miss the mark. We could still fail on something and forget to do something. And so as present-day followers of Jesus, we should instead focus on the strength and abilities He has given us and seek Him for guidance and the things we do not have control over and cannot muster.

“But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.” 2 Corinthians 12:9

Unlike us humans, our Everlasting Father has an endless source of strength, power, and wisdom. He invites us to tap on His strength so that we could go through our days and challenges with grace.

“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30

So how do we practically do this at the present time? What does it mean to tap on the Lord’s power? When we surrender our lives to the Lord, it also means we surrender all our fears, anxieties and worries upon Him. We gather strength from Him by allowing ourselves to unburden emotions we cannot unpack in front of others, to Him who is all ears as we pray and cry to Him.

We tap on His power when we thank Him for every good thing He has done for us, for the difficulties He has helped us endure, and for the challenges He made us go through that made us a better person. We should also thank Him for the scary things that did not come to pass in our life because of His mighty hand and providence.

“This poor man cried out, and the Lord heard him, And saved him out of all his troubles. The angel of the Lord encamps all around those who fear Him, And delivers them.” Psalm 34:6-7

More importantly, we tap into His power when we read His words, reflect on it, and meditate on it through our days. We tap on Him as our resource, when we allow ourselves to be assured by His loving promises. When we learn more about His character and expect his goodness and mercy to flow on our lives, we get to be strengthened by His love. We tap into His strength when we allow ourselves to be guided by Him through His words every single day.

And so, when we feel like the hours are not enough to fill out the work we have to do for our families, let us allow ourselves to be comforted by the thought that we have a God who is almighty. His loving hands is there to guide, to protect, to provide, and to lovingly take care of us and pat us in our backs whenever we did a good thing or need some reassurance.

We do not need extra pair of hands. We just need to spend more time with Jesus, know His character and promises, do what we can do with our present situations, and leave the rest to Him.

Thank you for reading through our devotional today. I invite you to ponder on Psalm 1 to dig deeper on today’s topic.

Reflection Question: Do you feel like you need more strength to live your days? How can tapping into God’s strength help empower you?

Conversation with the Lord: Lord Jesus Christ, thank you for allowing me to tap into your strength. Thank you that Your words are life. Give me the grace to continue learning more about you and your character, so that I can always remind myself of it and be assured in your love. Amen.
