Daily devotional: The SOS

They say that some of the sincerest, most fervent prayers are said in hospitals. Be it in one of the patient rooms, the chapel, the doctor’s offices, or lab testing areas, fervent prayers are said throughout the building to ask God for healing. Indeed, there is nothing that can make us storm the heavens for prayers than our self or our loved one being terribly ill or at the point of death.

1 John 5:14
1 John 5:14

Praying fervently is one of the ways we get to calm ourselves amid distress. Recognizing that there is a Divine Power that could work all things out is a sign of our dependence on the God who can take us out of our troubles The one who promised to listen to us.

“And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him.” 1 John 5:14-15

Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ modeled to us this faithful surrender to the Heavenly Father. He constantly sought God’s guidance by taking the time to pray to Him (Mark 1:35), seeking His guidance especially during critical decision making processes (Luke 6:12-13), in the midst of anxiety and distress (Matthew 26:36-42) and even at the point of death (Luke 23:46)

“During the days of Jesus’ life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with fervent cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission.” Hebrews 5:7

Moreover, our Messiah, Jesus Christ also interceded for us asking the Heavenly Father to protect us.

“I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one.” John 17:15

Being able to pray anywhere at any time, is one of the greatest gifts Jesus gave us. Reconciling us with God the Father, in spite of our sinfulness, Jesus paved the way for a line to reconnect us to the Sovereign King.

“But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” John 4:23-24

And so whenever we are praying fervently for protection, healing, and provision, let us call to mind that it is the will of our Savior for us to be protected from harm. That in His own good time He will hear us. All we have to do is remain faithful and obedient to Him.

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7

Thank you for reading through our devotional today. I invite you to ponder on Matthew 26:36-42 and John 17:9-18 to dig deeper on today’s topic.

Reflection Question: How and where do you pray when you are in desperate need of God’s help?

Conversation with the Lord: Lord Jesus Christ, thank you for reconciling us to the Father. For paving the way for us to reach Him again. Thank you that because of your sacrifice, we can pray and hold on to the living hope that God will hear us and respond to our troubles and distresses. Amen.
