Daily devotional: Well-spent

I stumbled upon a wonderful quote from American Author Annie Dillard. It says “how we spend our days, is of course, how we spend our lives.” And indeed, that is how we get to build a life. Day upon day of choosing what to do, and what not to do. Whom to spend time with, and whom not to bother with.

Ephesians 5:15-17
Ephesians 5:15-17

As followers of Jesus, we are called to spend our days wisely. To focus on thinking and doing what is good, building up and encouraging those around us.

“So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom.” Psalm 90:12

In today’s world where hours can be a blur as we zone out in front of the television, or choose to scroll away in the small blue screen in our hands, we get to squander one of the most wonderful and irreplaceable gifts God has given us — time. And when we squander this wonderful gift, we are going against our calling.

If we think about it, time is something given to all of us. We may not have the exact numbers of years, as the person next to us, but we all have the opportunity to make the best out of it.

“Seventy years are given to us! Some even live to eighty. But even the best years are filled with pain and trouble; soon they disappear, and we fly away.” Psalm 90:10

One of the best ways to make the most of our time is knowing what the Lord wants us to do. And we will only know that if we have an intimate relationship with Him. Practically this means a life guided by God’s commands and teachings, and where everyday choices and life-changing decisions are guided by God’s word.

“Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.” Ephesians 5:15-17

And as we try to follow God’s will in our lives and be fruitful, we are also guided to spend our days with hope. Shifting our focus from our problems, to God’s perfect nature, promises, past faithfulness, and praiseworthy truths.

“For the Lord is good; His steadfast love endures forever, and His faithfulness to all generations.” Psalm 100:5

Thank you for reading through our devotional today. I invite you to ponder on Psalm 90:9-17 to dig deeper on today’s topic.

Reflection Question: Do you spend your days wisely in accordance to God’s will?

Conversation with the Lord: Heavenly Father, thank you for allowing us to spend our days freely. May we choose to do your will each time, as our way of seeking and worshipping you. Amen.
