We always hear in church that we should meditate on God’s word everyday. But what does it exactly mean? How do we do that as moms?
Reading and meditating are two different things. To read the Bible means spending time reading the passage you need to read that day and then stopping there.
Meditating however means spending time pondering what you have just read. It means trying to find out what the verse or story means through backgrounders provided by reputable sources. It means taking notes on what spoke to you, and what you don’t understand and want to look up later on. It also means trying to know how we can apply its lessons to our day-to-day living.
“This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.” Joshua 1:8
For us moms of young children, who usually cannot do all the bible reading and meditation in one go, it may mean taking time to think about the passage we earlier read while the children are in school or taking a nap. Working moms on the other hand can reflect either during lunch or coffee break, or even while driving to work.
There is no rocket science to any of these. There is no format required, nor specific amount of time that needs to be allotted in internalizing God’s word. We just have to be sincere in seeking Him, and our hearts must genuinely want to know Him more.
“I love those who love me, and those who seek me diligently find me.” Proverbs 8:17
When we dive deeper into God’s word, we get to know Him better, and we get to trust Him more. We get to grow our faith, and become more confident to hold on to His promises. Moreover, we can better discern His will for our lives, and get the guidance and wisdom we need for everyday living.
“Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.” Psalm 19:14
Thank you for reading through our devotional today. I invite you to ponder on Psalm 119:1-8 to dig deeper on today’s topic.
Reflection Question: Do you spend time internalizing God’s word or do you just stop at reading the passage?
Conversation with the Lord: Heavenly Father, thank you for your life giving words. Give us the grace and confidence to make the most out of it by internalising and meditating on it everyday, so that we can know you more, and be nourished by it. Amen.
