One of my go-to recipes for days when I am pressed for time to cook, is this crunchy bacon liempo (pork belly). My kids love it (and why not it is crispy!), it is easily thawed, and it is budget friendly at P150 pesos for four adult servings. When you cook this alongside something like munggo guisado, or even a simple misua patola or sayote guisado, this turns into an even yummier meal!

What’s great about this is it does not require much ingredients. If you have a crispy coating mix on hand like Crispy fry, then just make a 1 is to 1 ratio with it and cornstarch and then you can start dredging your thinly sliced pork belly in this combo. If you do not have coating mix at hand, then just get an equal ratio of cornstarch and flour mixture, seasoned with salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
Php150.00 Ulam Idea
Since we can all benefit from a low-cost recipe in our repertoire of ulam dishes we prepare for our families, I invite you to take note of this crunchy bacon liempo recipe. Thinly sliced liempo is usually available in meat shops and groceries since frozen meat can be easily sliced thinly.
For 350 grams or so of meat, you can feed your family of four or five, and it can stretch well if you have younger kids who do not eat much. And yes you may need more oil than usual, but like most Filipino households, this pinoy fried recipe allows you to use recycled cooking oil, or if you are using new then you can recycle that too.
Crispy bacon liempo recipe
So without further ado, here’s our recipe and cooking procedure for our crunchy bacon liempo:
INGREDIENTS:
- 300-350 grams thinly sliced pork belly (liempo)
- ½ cup Crispy Fry Coating Mix
- ½ cup cornstarch
- Cooking oil (used cooking oil is okay as long as it is not used on fried fish)
- *Alternative coating mix:
- ½ cup all purpose flour
- ½ cup cornstarch
- ½ tsp salt
- ½ tsp pepper powder
- ¾ tsp garlic powder
PROCEDURE
- Wash the pork belly slices and pat dry with paper towel.
- Prepare the dredging mix and whisk to completely combine.
- Dredge the slices.
- Fry for about 1-2 minutes per side.
- Lay on a paper towel to absorb excess oil.
- Serve with a side-dish of vegetables
As for THE dipping sauce, this dish goes well with vinegar, Mang Tomas, or even banana ketchup. My other kid just eats it even without the sauce, but she asks for atchara. So yummy but a bit sinful, so just make sure not to cook this every week okay?
Tips on cooking crispy liempo
Since it is quite hot these days, it will be best to fry this early in the morning when your kitchen is not too hot yet or cook it late in the afternoon in time for dinner. Even if you have AC in your kitchen, frying with the AC on affects the performance of your air conditioner as grease in the air can clog its filter. So, try frying early in the morning if you want to eat it for lunch, and then just heat it up in the oven or the toaster when about to serve.
