7 Practical Tips on How to Get Your Child Organized for School

Leading a well-organized life is not something a person perfects in one day; it is something that has to be learned and imbibed over the course of one’s lifetime. Every human being has their formative years, and the type of upbringing they’re exposed to largely influences the kind of adult they’ll become.

Now, you have your child, and you’d like to see him or her organized without being told all the time, especially when it comes to school-related tasks. It could be getting his/her homework done, or having all school items appropriately stored.

It’s laudable if your child does all these tasks on their own, but in truth, these tasks require having a good memory and focus. Among children without Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), remembering and organizing their daily school life is hard enough, how much more kids with ADHD; it can be challenging.

Getting Organized for School

A parent or guardian can tackle such a challenge by ensuring that there is a system in place which helps them be in control and stay on top of organizing their activities. The following tips will help get your child organized all the time for school.

1. Make sure your child’s room is orderly

Keep finished projects and ongoing projects separately. Keep school supplies and art materials in specially labeled bins, cabinets, folders or in a box. Keep books on a shelf and place a bulletin board where you can pin reminders. The idea is to have everything that your child needs for school in specific places meant for them so that they can be found with ease when required. Label each folder, bin or cabinet compartment with the name of the content in them. Doing this will help your child find things easily since a tag or label identifies what’s kept where. For custom designed tags and labels, check Wunderlabel.com

2.   Use reminders

Teach your child to have a schedule for upcoming events and get hard copy organizers to help them remember. A pad of sticky notes should suffice. He or she can post these notes in areas where he frequently goes such as the mirror or the bathroom door.

3.   Gift your child a daily planner

A daily planner is a great way to monitor deadlines, upcoming events, and appointments. By keeping a standard to-do list, he/she can prioritize on what tasks to get done immediately and which one can be done later.

4.   Always have him prepared for the next day.

Never in the morning of the D-day, but the night before. Pack his/her books every evening before the next school day; keep the homework in the right folder and every other thing he/she may need – the clarinet for the school band, sneakers, snacks – make sure these are available for the next day. During weekends, check the backpack to ensure everything he/she needs for the coming week is available.

5.   Get your child school gear that helps them get organized

Some backpacks have multiple compartments; there’s a compartment for big books, for smaller books, pencils, and other stationery; for a water bottle, etc. School gears as such will help your child remain organized and conscious of what’s missing from the items he/she ought to take to school.

6.   Have structured weekends

If your child has ADHD, most Sunday evenings will leave him or her panicking because there are some things that he/she should have done over the weekend, but didn’t. Create a weekend routine in which you go over the week’s work to make sure nothing’s left out, and your child can go to school on Monday without any worries. You’d be surprised at how much kids worry about not getting their homework done.

7.   Offer support and praise

If you see your child adhering to instructions about being organized and putting in the effort, let him/her know that you see the efforts and that you are proud of what he/she is doing.

Even as adults, being organized takes a lot of effort and it’s only natural to do if you are already used to it. So, to shape your children into adults who will take organization very seriously, you need to start from a young age. Thanks for reading and till next post!

Here are some Christmas Gift Ideas for Teachers Under 350.00.

As promised, here is the second installment for our teacher gift idea series. I am hoping that the publication of this post can still make it in time for your holiday shopping and that this post on Christmas Gift Ideas for Teachers can help you better decide on what gifts to purchase.

Nowadays, online shopping can bring out a whole world of convenience for us moms, but when the holiday budget comes in at the last minute, it can be really stressful to shop online. Why? Because shipment may be delayed because of the holidays – delivery volumes, holiday induced traffic situation etc. even online sellers put up a disclaimer for these possible issues, and may even have earlier cut-off schedules.

In any case, for those who will be doing last minute PHYSICAL STORE shopping, for teachers at least, here’s part two of our blog series on Gift Ideas for teachers in the Philippines, this time under P350.00.

Christmas Gift Ideas for Teachers Under 350.00

Apparently, my daughter’s school discourages giving gifts for teachers during Christmas or any holiday for that matter. This is why I prodded her to come up with personalized Christmas Cards for each of her teachers so that we as a family could at least express our gratitude for the many great things her teachers have done for her. Having said that, I still researched for teacher gifts under P350.00 because I have become a mall rat, and I love shopping.

Pastry Gift Boxes for Teachers

For gifts under P350.00 you can already get a small box of pastry at either Purple Oven, Conti’s or even Mary Grace. Conti’s for instance sells boxes of assorted pastries, lemon squares, and even brownies for less than P300.00. A six-piece cheese roll box from Mary Grace on the other hand runs at around P320.00 I think. Just make sure to call in advance, or drop by the day before you decide to pick up the pastries (if they are more than five etc) so that you will not have to wait longer or run the risk of not getting the pastry that you want.

Cheeserolls are one of Mary Grace bCafe's Specialties, and it definitely is a nice pastry to give out to teachers. (This photo is taken from Mary Grace's official Facebook Page)

You may also want to get a bar or two of Theo and Philo Artisan Chocolates. They are available at Gourdo’s, Rustan’s Department Stores, and select Robinson’s Department Store Branches. Echo Store, also carries this local and world-class chocolates if I am not mistaken.

What is nice about giving food items as gifts is that it is much appreciated and at the same time can be shared with teacher’s friends of her own family.

If you are not the type to give edible gifts, and would not want to be inconvenienced with the needed careful handling, storage, etc of these gifts then go the usual route – buy something that is useful for child’s teacher all year round.

Christmas Gift ideas over at SM Department Store

In SM, there are cute water bottles with matching ear phones that are already in cute gift boxes. They come in different colors such that you will not have to find a different gift for Male teachers because they have the gift set in darker, male-friendly colors as well. Hurried mornings? No problemo! here are some ideas for quick breakfasts for Pinoy School Kids. (Photo Credits with modifications)

School will be starting soon, and let us expect traffic to further worsen. And the sad thing about it is, even school children sacrifice. I came up with the idea of coming up with an article on Quick Breakfasts for Pinoy School Kids because breakfast sometimes get skipped just so kids wouldn’t miss their school bus, won’t get stuck in traffic with mom or dad, or simply be late for school.

I remember seeing our neighbor’s kid (grade three I think) looking so tired every time I see him. I got the chance to ask him, and he said he is just sleepy and tired — he wakes up at five because his bus picks him up at 5:45AM.

You see, kids can be exhausted in school given their activities, lessons, and horsing around with their playmates. To top it off, they have to wake up early to make it in time for their school bus pick-up. I am guessing that there could even be mornings when that boy neighbor of ours could be pressed for time to finish breakfast.

I know that this could pretty much sum up Metro Life for all of us. Even if the school is 10 minutes away by car, if your child is in school service, or you will be driving him to and fro, the traffic situation can immediately bloat that drive time by up to two to three times, making a 10 minute drive, a 20-25 minute ordeal. For a young child, who has yet to adjust to waking up early and eating quickly, that could be stressful.

The good news here is that there could be a solution to all these. As moms, we can still be able to prepare nutritious breakfasts that can be eaten quickly by children. Here are some easy to prepare breakfasts, that can equally be eaten quickly by kids before they head to school.

Quick Breakfasts for Pinoy School Kids:

  1. Oatmeal and Fruits in Season – Rolled oats maybe the choice of health-conscious mamas, but I think it is OK to serve instant oatmeal to kids during mornings when both of you woke up a little late to have a regular breakfast. Sprinkle the bowl of oatmeal with dried fruits like raisins and mangoes, plus some fresh ones like slices of banana to increase its nutritional value. Serve with milk or his favorite morning juice. Rustan’s Fresh and Shopwise has a healthy selection of dried fruits and Nuts which can be bought on a 100-gram minimum packs.
  2. Breakfast Cereal – Health Conscious Moms may again raise their eyebrow upon this suggestion, but when one is pressed for time, a mom has to do what she has to do. The key is keep a healthy stash of cereals in the house that you can dress with either their favorite yogurt, or fruits in season. Corn flakes and wheat-based cereals can be a good choice for this.

===============================================================

  1. Pandesal (or whatever bread you have at home) and Healthy Spreads – preparing healthy spreads ahead of time could take the guesswork (and stress) out of this otherwise easy to prepare (and gobble up) breakfast for kids. Homemade Cheese Pimiento, egg salad sandwich, tuna spread, chicken spread, ham and cheese and the like. Do not punish yourself though if you choose to serve your child Peanut Butter and Jelly, Cream Cheese and Blueberry Jam, Butter and Strawberry jelly, or a fat cheese slice with their pandesal. In fact, they could even have nutella, finneti or crumpy or whatnot if you are open to that.
  2. Breakfast Smoothie – Nothing can be quicker to eat or drink in this case than a breakfast smoothie. Osterize/shake with their morning glass of milk strawberry, banana or avocado (or all these if possible!). This will at least fuel them up for the next two to two and a half hours, until they have their morning snack in school.
  3. Muffins or Banana Loaf Slices, plus cream cheese, jam, or cheese cubes – Buy fresh muffins from your trusted bakery or mall-based bread stores (TLJ and The French Baker all have big discounts when their shop is about to close), so go check out easy to eat, fresh bread or pastries there that can be reheated in your oven toaster in the morning. Even Julie’s, Fortune, S&R, Goldilocks, Grocery-based bakeries, and Red Ribbon offer fresh pastries that have less preservatives (they expire within three-to four days) compared to those pre-packed goods in the supermarket which can last for months.

So there you have it, hope I was able to add in to your arsenal of quick-to-prepare breakfasts for children. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and as they say, for the brain and the body to function fully in school it has to be fueled up with a nutritious meal.

Will be coming up with more posts like this to help all of us become more intentional with the food that we serve our children. As promised here is the continuation on our series on Baon Ideas for our school-aged kids. I remember apart from the packed lunch, we should also be concerned about where we pack our children’s lunches.

Although I would like to buy my daughter those stainless tin can things, I find myself packing her lunches in glass lock containers like this because I think it is relatively safer to store her lunches in these containers than in plastic. But that is just me – you can buy glass lock container sets here. If you want a set with fewer lunch boxes then you may want to get these which comes with a free thermal bag that helps keep your child’s food warmer – check it out here. It may be heavier, but it does not easily break, and I feel safer knowing that her food is stored in such container. Anyhow there are other plastic containers that are safe to use and BPA-Free like this one.

Anyway, too much for that, will have a more detailed discussion on baon wares soon. For now, here is the second part of –

Lunch Baon Ideas for School Kids (Part 2):

  1. Tortang Giniling – This is one of my personal favorites growing up, my inay usually cooks this with banana leaf to get a perfect omelet. It really is super easy to make, just sauté fresh ground pork you may add in some potatoes to bulk it up. Set aside. Beat some eggs, season with a bit of salt and then add in the ground pork and make small patties or a large omelet. You can now pack this with a small packet of ketchup that you got in the drive thru or food delivery service that you ordered recently.
  2. Hinubarang Longganiza with Fresh Tomatoes – This is hands-down one of my favorites. Take any longganiza that you have in the ref – Vigan works best for this but any, really will do. Semi-boil it in water to cook the meat inside. Once cooked (but not fried in its own juices), remove the longganiza from the pan, and peel off its casing. You may then put it back in the pan and toast/fry it until it becomes somehow crunchy. Pack with fresh sliced tomatoes!

===============================================================

  1. Homemade Tonkatsu – Im sure fried porkchop is in your repertoire of school pabaon, but why not take it a notch further and try to replicate the Japanese Pork Chop dish your not-so-little boy super enjoys in your after Sunday mass lunch-out? It is super easy to make and you can batch freeze this too like the Fish fillet and Chicken nuggets that I included in the Part 1 of this Baon Lunch Ideas for Kids’ series. Choose thinly sliced porkchops. Pre-boil in water seasoned with a bit of salt and pepper and extra clear soda if you want it to be a bit tender. Once cooked, set aside. Soak in beaten eggs, and then dredge in panko breading. Fry. Pack this with shredded cabbage and Thousand Island Dressing on the side. Do not forget your child’s favorite porkchop sauce too!
  2. Yangchow Fried Rice — This one is fairly easy to make. Just saute a bit of garlic, onions, green peas, carrots, diced Chinese sausage or ham, any left-over meat that you have from last night (chicken or pork), if your kids are not allergic to shrimps and you have some left overs the night before then include that as well. Add in a bit of butter or margarine. Add in the left over rice from last night’s. Once heat has been distributed well, add in some beaten eggs, and then a little bit of soy sauce. So that there’s some sort of ulam for your child, you may want to top this with slices of longganisa or Chinese chorizo, or even dumplings for that “chao-fan effect.” Check this past post on other fried rice recipes under P100.00.
  3. Cheese and Mushroom Omelet – This is a great baon to pack for those crazy mornings. Just dice some button mushrooms, and then dice or grate some quickmelt cheese. Beat some eggs, mix the cheese and mushroom, and then fry as usual. So easy to prep, and your fam at home has a nice breakfast to pair with either toast, hot pandesal, sinangag or steaming white rice.

So there you have it, I hope I was able to give you more lunch baon ideas for your grade schooler. I think the baon ideas that I specified in this series can also be appreciated by the mister if he also brings packed lunches in the office. If you are a working mom then you might as well pack some lunch for yourself too with the same baon! Packing lunch is not just a money saving idea, it also saves working parents precious lunch minutes that may have been wasted lining up at the cafeteria, or that fastfood chain adjacent to the office. For pumping moms, it also helps a lot as you can have lunch while pumping saving you time so that you can have a longer video call with your little one at home.

Running out of lunch ulam baon ideas for school kids? Here are some suggestions.

Running out of lunch ulam baon ideas for school kids? Here are some suggestions. (Photo Credits)

Day in and day out we have to prepare lunch ulam baons for our school-aged children, and it is very easy to run out of ideas on what to prepare for them.

After all, we need a lunch meal that is nutritious, easy-to-prepare for those crazy school mornings, fits our budget, and of course appeal to the taste of our discriminating little bosses. Another consideration that comes to mind is that it should not spoil easily, so personally I would not recommend packing soup-y lunches, or those with too much sauce because of the spoilage risk, and the risk of spills in both the lunch boxes and their uniforms.

In this multi-part series, the lunch baon ideas that I will be suggesting can either be made from scratch and then frozen for three to four batch cookings, or could just be bought off those grocery freezers. Personally, I would have a balance of those that are cooked from scratch and those that can be bought in the supermarket? Why? Obviously those made from scratch are fresher, healthier, and cheaper. Having some ready-made baons from the grocery store can be a life-saver for those crazy weeks. And if you are like me, there is this place in my family’s heart for yummy food like sonsi longganiza or those chinese chorizos – that to me no amount of domestic diva-ness could make me replicate.

Anyway, you may want to read my past entry on bento supplies if and when you would like to make bento meals out of these baon suggestions.  Also stock up on those Ziploc bags because it will be very useful in batch cooking/batch marinating/batch-freezing baon stockpiles.

So without further ado, here is a list of —

Lunch Ulam Baon Ideas for School Kids:

  1. Beef Tapa – I usually buy thin slices of beef offered in the SM Hypermart near our place. I just make sure that on the day that I buy it, I apportion and marinate it already in my simple homemade tapa marinade which is basically a mixture of a bit of soy sauce, ketchup, and brown sugar. I cut it before marinating too – yes you read it right, I cut instead of slice because using kitchen scissors makes my life as a mom much easier. Cutting it into smaller pieces makes it easier to cook, and chomp on. I batch marinade about three to four packs and just freeze them until I need to cook. I usually cook this as our breakfast too so it is like hitting two birds with one stone.
  2. Lumpiang Shanghai – I use this recipe from Panlasang Pinoy when preparing/batch freezing lumpiang shanghai for baon or lunches. You can also make a tuna or all-veggie variation. I usually do the wrapping and all within two days after I shopped for the meat — usually on the day itself so that I would not need to thaw the ground pork anymore.

(Post Continued Below)

===============================================

You may also want to read:

===============================================================

  1. Salisbury Steak – Or the fanci-fied hamburger patties. Again I make patties from scratch usually the same day or the following day after I have purchased the lean ground meat, so that I would not have to thaw anymore. I follow this recipe, but i pan-grill the patties instead of grilling it outdoors or elsewhere. You can always buy off the grocery, just fry it in butter and a bit of olive oil, and add in a dash of steak seasoning to make it more palatable.I then put on the side mushroom gravy which I usually buy store bought. To save on time, this steak will also be the family meal of the day.
  2. Crunchy Fish Fillet – This one is super easy to make and you can bulk up and batch freeze for up to about three weeks. Just buy those Pangasius fillet in the grocery, slice into squares or fat-finger sizes. Season with a bit of salt and pepper, dip in beaten egg, and dredge in Panko bread crumbs. You can now store these in separate ziploc bags and freeze until the day you will use it. I usually thaw it in the ref though the night before I fry it. As a family meal, I just add in Asian or Thousand Island dressing on the side.
  3. Chicken Fingers or Nuggets – is basically just chicken fillet cut into finger sizes and cooked using the same recipe as the above-mentioned crunchy fish fillet.
  4. Pan-Grilled Chicken Barbecue – Pre-boil your child’s favorite part the night before, and then the morning of put in a pan with your favorite barbecue marinade and leave it there to cook for about ten minutes each side. I suggest that you use thigh fillet part for this.

School days are almost here again, so whether it is your child’s first time to go to school, or he is already a grade schooler, it is important to establish a good sleeping routine at this point. Here are some tips on how to get kids to sleep early. (Photo Credits)

Only about more than two weeks to go before classes start, and this would only mean, our school-aged children would have to start sleeping early once again.

If your child’s bedtime schedule did not change because of the summer vacation, then lucky you. But if your family is like most families then the time to go back to regular school day bedtime schedule should begin now.

Two weeks is a good lead time to deal with protests, requests for an additional 30 minute extension to play or watch their favorite show, and generally to reset their body clocks. So what is the ideal bedtime for kids, well most families have their kids sleep between 8:00 and 9:00 PM. Personally, I put my children to sleep by seven in the evening to give me time for chores, some downtime with the mister, and generally to rest from a long day of parenting and homemaking (and writing for this blog too!). Having them on an early bedtime saves my sanity, and although they wake up really early, I am generally happy that I have become a morning person because of this schedule. I did find some great articles on Sleeping Guide Mattress Website which gave me a few tips and tricks to make sure I get plenty of rest during the night. I was bit surprised but once I adjusted my schedule and habits and gave some time, I can say that those tips were very handy!

So for parents out there, here are some tips on

How to get kids to sleep early:

  1. Slowly ease into an early sleep schedule. Children usually hate surprises, so the best thing to do at this point is to start making their bedtime early by 30-minute pockets until you reach their desired bedtime. They will definitely protest being asked to sleep by 7:30 when they are used to sleep till 9 in the evening.
  2. Engage them in physical activities. Allow your children to play outside, run around, sweat, and do sports. Physical activities will make them yearn for rest. In my experience, swimming wears out little bodies real well, so if you have an access to a pool, allow them to enjoy the water!

  1. No sweets two hours before bedtime. If you allow your children to have sweets, especially chocolates, discourage them from eating two to three hours before bedtime. This also applies to chocolate drinks. Sweets, especially caffeine-laced chocolates keep them alert, making it hard for them to snooze early.
  2. Have a Quiet Time. Avoid visual stimulation two hours before bedtime too. This means, TVs and Gadgets (if you allow them some gadget time) should be turned off as well two hours before their intended bedtime. This is because the visual and mental stimulation they get from TV and gadgets bombard their senses, making it hard for them to calm down and relax.
  3. Get back into your bedtime routine. If you do not have something like this, then now is the time to establish one. It is as simple as bath time or a wash-up before bed, tooth brush, changing into PJs, story-telling and then nightly prayers. Your child’s mind will somehow be programmed that he or she needs to sleep when you start doing the routine, and then ease into it.
  4. Lights Out. There is nothing like zero stimulation that will make the kids sleepy. Turn of all the lights if possible. No TV, no sounds. And avoid tinkering with your gadget while making your child sleep. If your room will need a black out curtain like this, then buy one (you can do so here). If your child will demand that a night light be turned on, then go with that, but only a night light. Buy night lights here.
  5. Make it comfy. Make sure that your child’s room, or wherever he sleeps in is comfortable enough to induce sleep. If you have air conditioning, turn it on for your child, if none then make him or her wear comfortable clothes, and make sure there is a fan in the room, and the windows are open (with the screens closed of course). Here are some air conditioning deals you may want to check out – which can be on a cash on delivery basis, delivered right into your home. Some can even be bought by installment – check it out here.
  6. Do not let them sleep in too late. Allowing your kids to sleep in until 10 in the morning, will just give them more energy to sleep in later in the evening. Encourage them to wake up early by giving them activities and preparing a great breakfast. Here are some happy breakfast ideas you may want too check out.

So there you have it. Better start early instead of two to three days before classes start.

I am not a really creative mom, and I have taken steps to learn bento making, but I really, really have a long way to go. Anyway, here is a list of —

Shops where you can buy Bento Tools and Accessories in the Philippines:

You can get molds, different sized containers, colorful dividers and other accessories for as low as 66.00! They usually have branches in Robinson’s Malls, but their store in Galleria is really a fun branch to check out.

Are you running out of ideas for sandwiches to prepare for your kids and your husband’s baon?

I have compiled a list of some sandwich recipes that you may want to try to give that ready-made sandwich spread a break.

Here are yummy and easy sandwich recipes for baon:

1. Crabstick Sandwich – Well, I really recommend that you use the best quality crabstick for this recipe. Flake the crab stick, add thin strips of cucumber, then toss in some Japanese Mayo, and then season with salt and pepper. Assemble with lettuce, and if you like the flavor and you have some in the house, throw in some strips of nori wrapper.

2. Adobo Flakes Sandwich — left over Adobo in the ref? No problem! Flake it, mix with a bit of mayo (use lite if you have one) and voila! You’ve got a super easy sandwich at your fingertips. Assemble in wheat bread with lettuce, and some thinly sliced cucumber and tomatoes.

  1. Cheese Pimiento From Scratch – I remember my mom patiently making this every Sunday for our baon the whole week. Unfortunately, by Tuesday, my brother would have licked off all the spread in the container. Hehe. Anyway, here is a great recipe that resembles my mom’s.
  2. Ultra Easy Egg Sandwich – This one is super easy to make, and I just don’t know if my ex-officemates are just trying to make me bola whenever I bring over some of this spread for our pooled morning meryenda. I actually discovered this a day after Easter when I do not know what to do with the Easter Eggs Achi found in our Church Easter Egg Hunting Activity. Really easy to make, chop boiled eggs. Mix in some lite mayo – and then a bit of mustard. Season with salt and pepper. Assemble in your chosen bread (white bread is best – YAY for the extra calories) with lettuce. Actually, I keep one in a small lock and lock container in the ref for midnight snack because it is really good with soda crackers too.
  3. Bacon and Nutella – I am deeply sorry for including this in this blogpost but I really, really cannot help it. It is the CARBOHOLIC talking, so pardon me dear mommies, and if you find this offensive, just skip to the next paragraph. For bacon lovers like me, read on. This is very simple. Fry your bacon the way you like it (some like it crispy, others want it not so crispy so cook it to your preference). Drain excess oil with paper towel (as if that will drastically change the caloric value and cholesterol content of this sandwich). I strongly suggest that you use the softest white bread you can see in the grocery. Like what one local TV star says, ‘itodo na natin ito,’ and I really, really tasted the difference between using a wheat bread versus white bread for this sandwich – so go ahead and get that white bread! Spread Nutella on both sides. Sandwich the bacon slices in between. This recipe will work as well with SPAM or even Sweet and Creamy Peanut Butter! ( YIKES! sorry again for another bad, bad suggestion – I know I should be more intentional on what I have to feed myself and my family but when all the chaos in the house meets exhaustion and lack of sleep, this plus an ice cold can of coke zero transport me to H-E-A-V-E-N).
