How to make granola

For a self-proclaimed penny pincher like me, ready made granola can be expensive. And while it is a healthy alternative to cereals, i have come to realise that it is an unnecessary expense since granola can be easily done at home!

How to make granola at home

All you have to do is to gather all your favorite ingredients and you are literally good to go. The basic ingredients are basically honey or maple syrup, rolled oats, olive or coconut oil, dash of cinnamon and salt. You will also need a baking pan, and an oven.

Have fun choosing ingredients

Now choose your favorite dried fruit, nuts and seeds that youd like to mix in your granola. In the recipe i made, i used dried mangoes and raisins and cashew because those are what my children enjoy. But it really is up to you, Healthy Options, S&R and Rustans have a lot of seeds, nuts and fruits you can choose from so have fun!

Make your own Granola

1. Preheat oven to 275F.

2. In a large mixing bowl combine 4 cups of rolled oats, and your chosen nuts and seeds. Just eyeball the amount of nuts and seeds to mix through.

3. In a separate bowl, mix thoroughly 1/2 cup of maple syrup or honey, 1/2 cup of olive oil or cold pressed coconut oil.

4. Mix the honey and oil mixture into the oats and nuts mixture. Do not worry about the clumps. Just make sure that the whole mixture has been coated with honey and oil. You can add in more oil and honey mixture if you want your granola clumpier.

5. Bake the oats mixture for 10 minutes. Take out from the oven and stir and then bake for another 10 minutes.

6. Check if the granola smells like toasted honey nuts as that indicates that it has already been cooked.

7. Add in the dried fruits and mix thoroughly.

8. Cool the granola COMPLETELY and place in a sealed air tight container. This can last up to four weeks in storage but make sure it has been thoroughly cooled to ensure that there will be no moisture once stored.

Homemade healthy granola

You can then have this with cold milk or over your favorite yogurt. Truly a quick and inexpensive breakfast treat!
