Daily Devotional, Aug 12, 2023 Bask in His light

“When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

John 8:12

Lighthouses are structures that sailors and fishermen rely on for guidance and direction. It warns them of imminent danger, and remains constantly bright regardless of the condition in the sea. Its foundation is strong that storms and strong winds cannot stop it from illuminating the darkest of nights. And despite technological advancements, the US Coastguard still thinks that lighthouses are still beneficial for night time navigation.

For us Christians, Jesus Christ is that one constant bright light that helps us navigate our lives and saves us from the dangers of sin. There is no problem that He cannot handle for us, and with the Holy Spirit abiding in us, we will not be shaken. (Acts 2:25). Jesus is the light that illuminates and takes the darkness out of our lives if only we surrender it to Him.

So how does God physically become the light of our lives, you ask? Well, in the bible it is written that His “words are a lamp to my feet, a light on my path” (Psalm 119:105), which means we should use His words to guide us in our life journey. By immersing ourselves and meditating on His words daily, we get to be guided by His will for our life. We get to hold on too, to His promises, and have faith that He will never leave us.

As Christians, we are also being called to shine Jesus’ light, by reflecting His life, truth and words to others. In his First Epistle, St. Peter encouraged us to proclaim the good news of salvation given that we have stepped out already of the darkness of our sins, “But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light” (1 Peter 2:9). As moms, this is one of our foremost roles at home — to guide our children towards a Godly life and run a household that is anchored to the Lord.

Remember, we are to shine His light when our lives are picture perfect, and even when our lives seem at its darkest. When we are at our happiest, we can share what we have, and when we are at our loneliest, we must cling to the light that is Christ Jesus.

Thank you for reading through our devotional today. I invite you to read John 3:19-21 to dig deeper on today’s topic.

Reflection Question: Is Jesus Christ the light of your life? How do you stay in His light?

Conversation with the Lord: Heavenly Father, thank you for lighting up my life. Thank you for illuminating the darkest areas of my life and taking out the dark sins of my past. Use me to help others bask in your light too. Amen.
