Daily devotional, October 28, 2023 Steward of Grace

"And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased." Hebrews 13:16

One of the most common dreams of young girls is to become a stewardess or a flight attendant. And why not? They look lovely and poised, they are gracious as ever, and they patiently serve.

As Christians, we are also called to a life of stewardship. While we commonly hear preachings encouraging us to be good stewards of God’s material blessings, we all know that not everyone can comfortably give within their means. This however does not mean that the financially poor can no longer be steward.

In his Epistle, St. Peter encouraged believers to be stewards of whatever form of blessings he has received. “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms” (1 Peter 4:10). And blessings do not only mean money or material possessions — it could mean time or talent. Even the poorest of the poor can give time to serve the underprivileged, and even the impoverished can share his talent, skill, or gift to the church and those who are in need.

More importantly, we can all be stewards of kindness and grace. The Lord has been so gracious, loving and merciful towards us that passing on that grace we received to others should be a default character within all of us:

"Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers." Galatians 6:10

There is a saying that humans are given two hands – one to be used for receiving blessings and the other one for sharing them. We should not withhold material and spiritual blessings from others because we ourselves do not deserve these graces. They are given to us because the Lord is righteous, loving and merciful.

"For whoever has will be given more, and they will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them." Matthew 25:29

Again, grace is kindness and blessings from the Lord that we do not even deserve. Since we do not deserve the Lord’s forgiveness, righteousness, spiritual and material possessions, the best way we can thank Him is by being good stewards of grace to others.

Thank you for reading through our devotional today. I invite you to ponder on Colossians 3:12-17, to dig deeper on today’s topic.

Reflection Question: Are you a good steward of God’s grace and mercy?

Conversation with the Lord: Lord Jesus Christ, thank you for being so gracious to me all my life Help me pass on this goodness to others so that I could be a good steward of your grace. Amen
