Hello everyone! We were out and about for almost a whole month! With God’s grace we were able to take time off for a vacation. Sharing with you one afternoon we spent in an old pet store – more like an aquarium fish shop. Well, it reminded me of the fish store my childhood friend owned since it is old yet full of happy fish life, but this fish store is a bit bigger.

Lots of aquarium fishes!

The kids are super thrilled to visit the pet store even if it is not as shiny and new looking like mall pet shops. The pet store surprisingly has a lot of aquarium fish varieties which include: Tetra glow fish, Flower horn, Gold Fish, Betta Fish, Angel Fish, Janitor Fish, Arowana, Molly fish, Platties, and more. The kids did not even notice that time is passing, and we spent like half an hour or so there ogling the fishes!  🐠

The littles were so worked up to see lots of fish poo! Anyway, the lady who owns the store was so gracious that she kept on answering our questions, even allowing us to film in her store. So there, thank you Ma’am Pet Shop Owner 😃  It may be an old store but it really is worth exploring. Truly, we cannot judge a book by its cover! The old shop brought a lot of happiness to the littles.

Affordable fish, fish supplies, and aquarium accessories

Of course, the prices of aquarium fish there were much cheaper compared to mall pet shops. They are also complete when it comes to aquarium accessories and fish supplies. They have various types of fish food, vitamins, aquarium tank supplies and accessories, among other needs of fish keeping families.

Food for the soul

At this point, I hope you can allow me to share with you one of my favorite bible passages, this time from the First Letter of St. Peter:

“And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.”

1 Peter 5:10

Thank you very much for stopping by and till next post!

After two years of Pandemic, we are happy to be resuming family Easter traditions

Hi fellow mommies! Happy Easter to all of you and hoping you all had a meaningful and restful holy week. Like most of you, our little family has little traditions in commemorating our Savior’s week of Passion, Death and Resurrection.

This of course were put on hold physically because of the pandemic. This year however we are very happy to resume these activities face to face 🙂

Finally back in Physical Church

Now that there are physical masses already after two years of pandemic, I am just as happy that I could finally bring my children to attend the Ash Wednesday Mass, Palm Sunday Mass and all other Eucharistic Celebrations during the holy week.

During Ash Wednesday, my two littles were a bit surprised by how they look after the priest marked their forehead with ash. I remembered they were so young during our last Ash Wednesday Mass.

During Palm Sunday,  they are as usual happy to have their own Palm Fronds or Palaspas. My two younger ones even shrieked a bit when they too got sprinkled with holy water.

Of course, we also attended the Maundy Thursday Last Supper Mass, and then the Way of the Cross the next day. On Saturday, we attended the Easter Vigil Mass, and then the next day, joined our Church’s Easter Festivities.

Annual Family Tradition

We also had our own Easter Celebration at home — one which we do annually. We set up a little egg hunt for the kids. Over the years, we have gathered dozens of plastic eggs which we just store and reuse the following years. We of course add more or replenish whenever there is a new kid, or if we lost some. 🙂

This year, I am packing happy yet simple surprises that could hopefully make the kids Easter this year sweeter and more fun. As usual, I found the exercise so relaxing. There is something with packing in candies and sweets in plastic eggs — finding its pairs and all, and hiding them in little nooks and crannies in our little abode.

Thanking the Lord for the Opportunity to celebrate with the Family

I thank the Lord for giving us the opportunity to do this for the kids every year. I am just hoping that in time, they will remember this and do this with their own. 🙂 If you are having trouble with bringing kids to church, hope you can find time to read this previous article we posted on bringing babies and young children to church.

Special remembrance to my mom who really takes time to boil eggs, task us to color them, and then hide them early in the morning our garden for us to hunt. Family traditions and simple faith wins 🙂

Food for the soul

At this point, I hope you can allow me to share with you one of the bible passages that I hold on to, this time from the Book of Proverbs:

“A man shall not be established by wickedness: but the root of the righteous shall never be moved.”

Proverbs 12:3

Thank you for stopping by and till next post!

There are a lot of hidden gems worth exploring in the Philippines!

If you are ever on a road trip and want to have a less common experience that is not as crowded as some tourist destinations, the Angono Petroglyphs and Pililla Wind Farm are excellent choices.

When traveling with small children, the scenic drives make for a great experience. The views provide plenty of opportunities to play car games. Road trips are perfect for family bonding, and exploring hidden gems together creates lasting memories.

The only downside to road trips is the possibility of getting a small dent in your car because of debris on the road. Thankfully, these dents are easy to fix on your own with a plunger, or if you prefer a repair shop, they can cost around 800 pesos.

Angono Binangonan Petroglyphs

Located in Rizal, the Angono Binangonan Petroglyphs are rock drawings made by carving into a rock wall in Angono, Rizal, Philippines.

There are many symbolic representations associated with both healing magic and sympathetic magic in these engravings. Tagalog folk religion considers the site sacred, believing it to be the home of anitos or ancestor spirits.

Visitors can explore these ancient drawings independently or take guided tours led by experts from the National Museum of Anthropology in Manila or other private organizations certified for tourism services.

The National Museum of the Philippines declared it a National Cultural Treasure in 1973. The Angono Binangonan Petroglyphs is the perfect stop for those interested in the culture and history of the Philippines.

Pililla Wind Farm

Also in Rizal is the Pililla Wind Farm with 27 wind turbine generators. The whole wind farm can generate enough electricity to power more than 66,000 households.

Pililla Wind Farm is a must-see for any visitor to Rizal. The site offers panoramic views of Laguna Bay and Tanay, and lush greenery surrounds the wind turbines. Visitors can walk to various parts of the site, making it accessible for all ages and mobility levels.

Pililla Wind Farm is located about two hours from Manila. It is considered one of the country’s top leaders in clean energy, contributing to its vision of becoming a clean energy economy.

Hidden gems can be found all over the Philippines. Whether you are interested in history, culture, or nature exploration, there is a hidden gem waiting for you to explore with your family on your next road trip.

Thank you for reading up mommies! Till next post!

They are wonderful rewards indeed!

Hi ladies, starting the week right by appreciating one of my children.

I have been chronicling some stories about my middle child here in the blog. If you are new here, well, Siobs is my cheerful, rambunctious, yet super-duper kind daughter.

The other day, she walked up to me while I was meal planning and drawing up my grocery orders. And she told me this out of the blue:

“Mama, you don’t need to buy me a present for Christmas ha. Just save up the money. Santa’s going to give me a gift naman anyway, sayang naman ang pera.”

Little Siobs

Oh dear siobs, my tender-hearted daughter, you never fail to amaze me

In reality, children are sensitive enough to understand that times are tough these days. The lockdowns have affected the finances of many families. Even families whose businesses or work have not been affected by this ongoing pandemic, are choosing to save up and tighten their grip on their savings.

Such financial situation and the upcoming Christmas season might be putting a pressure on most parents. This is especially true if the kids are used to receiving gifts and trips and a lavish spread during the holidays.

But based from what my daughter told me, I figured that maybe we should not feel pressured. I think those of certain age can already understand that they will not receive an extravagant Christmas present this year. Explain it through a heart to heart talk. In reality, since kids are observant, they will get the gist if they see or hear you habitually trying to save up. Children four years old and below, on the other hand, hardly know what to expect yet during the holidays so they do not get disappointed too easily.

Present VS Presence

Kids are smart and sensitive creatures, and most of them would choose to spend time and play with us over those expensive gizmos we can buy them. So choose lambing time, game time, family movie time, baking day, and going under their forts with them.

Your presence is much more appreciated than presents so do not be a tad guilty! These activities tend to be remembered fondly throughout their grown up years, and even when they become parents too!

Take heart, Ladies. You are raising them well! Till next post!

Here are some of the best Disney shows your toddler will love.

Hello there Mommies! Sharing with you today a guest post that can help us decide on the shows we will allow our toddlers to watch. Thanks to fellow writer James Dorian, for writing for us:

Best Disney Shows Your Toddler Will Love

It’s an age-old problem: should toddlers watch TV? If you ask me, they should watch educational, but entertaining shows as well. As long as parents control their time in front of the screen and bring it down to a reasonable limit, they will only benefit from it.

I mean, admit it: you used to love Disney movies and shows as a kid, too. Why would we deprive our kids from the experience? I already started using Disney+ and let me tell you: my entire family enjoys it. If you already use Apple TV, you can add get Disney+ on that service. Here are the instructions on how to do that: https://setapp.com/how-to/get-disney-plus-on-apple-tv.

Now, onto the main point: what shows can you watch with your toddler? I’ll list a few options that my kid loves.

  1. Muppet Babies

This one is all about fun! You can put the show on when you want your toddler to relax, laugh, and use their imagination. The baby versions of our favorite Muppet characters play different games and go on weird adventures. It’s a new, modern show that still hasn’t been wrapped up. Once you go through the three seasons that are currently available, you’ll have to wait for the new releases.

  1. Handy Manny

My kid loves this one! Manny, a handy repairman, lives in a town where its residents speak two languages: English and Spanish. Manny’s tools also talk, and they help children to learn a foreign language from a very early age. It’s a lovely show that activates their hunger for learning. Plus, they may get interested in fixing things. That’s a skill they can use through life.

This show also has four seasons.

  1. Mickey Mouse Clubhouse

Mickey Mouse is a classic, innocent character that everybody loves. He’s been a quintessential symbol of childhood for generations. In this show, he helps toddlers to learn basic math and develop their initial problem-solving skills. The episodes are interactive, and they truly engage children.

There are four seasons of several short episodes, so it will take some time for your toddler to go through them all. You can feel free to repeat the episodes; nobody gets bored with them.

  1. Doc McStuffins

Doc McStuffins has many stuffed animal friends with different health problems. She runs a clinic for them. Broken toys? Not a problem when they have access to a great doctor!

Children benefit from this show in multiple ways. They learn how to care for their toys. It’s less likely for toddlers to break toys when they watch this show and imagine how they go through pain. Plus, the show makes them less scared of doctors. These are good people, who only try to help others. Isn’t that a nice lesson for a kid to learn?

It’s an award-winning show with its fifth season currently running.

  1. The Lion Guard

This is another new show that’s still coming out with new episodes. It’s currently on season 4. Kion, Simba’s son, is the main character. He has lovely companions, who are adventurous and always looking for trouble.

Both parents and kids love this show. It triggers a toddler’s love for animals, friendships, and adventures.

  1. Puppy Dog Pals

Are you a dog lover? Do you want to inspire your child to fall in love with animals, too? This is the perfect show for that! Rolly and Bingo, the two Pugs who run the show, love having fun. They adore their owner Bob, so that teaches a valuable life lesson: animals are full of love as long as you show them some attention.

Throughout their missions, Rolly and Bingo learn about the way the world works.

Currently, the fourth season is running on Disney+.

  1. PJ Masks

This is the perfect show to watch before sleep. Gekko, Owlette, and Catboy are normal kids with normal problems. They go to school, eat their meals, and have usual lives. But they are also superheroes at night. They fight the bad guys and save the world. By the next day, they fix all problems and bring the town back to order.

Your kids will love the stories of fighting crime before bedtime. They will get something good to dream about: being a superhero.

What Shows Will You Watch?

Disney+ no longer offers a free trial, which used to last for 30 days when the service was launched. But that’s okay. It’s still affordable and very valuable for kid-friendly content. You can pay on a month-to-month basis and cut the subscription when you don’t need it.

As for the shows, I love most of them! My toddler does, too.

Here's our article on Under P500 Buffet Restaurants for Baptismal and Birthday Parties (Part 1).

Here’s our article on Under P500 Buffet Restaurants for Baptismal and Birthday Parties (Part 1).

If you are looking for buffet restaurants where you can celebrate your child’s christening or kiddie party then this post is for you. We have rounded up (well, tried to – because we might accidentally miss some) in this post, Under P500 buffet restaurants for baptismal and birthday parties that parents can choose from.

We are making a two-part series, and this initial issue is for buffet restaurants that charge under P500.00 per head. While most buffet places offer a different pricing for lunch and dinner, we based this article on the lowest cost that they offer – anyway most kiddie parties and christening receptions are held at noon time or merienda. Keep in mind of course that USUALLY, kids under four feet in height pay only half the amount that they charge for adults, and those that are below three feet get to eat for free! So Yay for little guests!

Disclaimer though, I chose P500 pesos and below as a price point since some kiddie fast food parties  would cost about 200 per pax, and as we know, buffets are a notch higher. If you accidentally landed on this post, but you are actually looking for fast-food restaurants for your upcoming kiddie parties, then click on this post instead (fast-food restaurants with kiddie party packages). We also have a separate post for suggested Christening reception venues. This post is specifically about Under P500 Buffet Restaurants for Baptismal and Birthday receptions.

Under P500 Buffet Restaurants for Baptismal and Birthday Parties for children

Anyway, here are some buffet restaurants in the Philippines that charge below P500.00 per head. You may want to consider these Filipino buffet places for your child’s binyag or children’s party:

1. Tramway Buffet – For less than P300.00 (They have different rates depending on the branch, but the price range is at P228.00 to P258.00) you and your guests can partake on a Buffet dining experience that has Chinese, Japanese and Filipino dishes. They have branches in Banaue, Timog, Shaw, and Roxas Boulevard. Their popular dishes include sweet and sour pork, fried chicken, steamed fish, among other Chinese dishes. Click here to inquire.

2. Cabalen Restaurant – For as low as P298.00 you get to enjoy popular Kapampangan dishes in this buffet restaurant. The good thing about Cabalen is that it has a lot of branches, so most likely, there is one in a major mall near you. Classic dishes included in their buffet list are sisig, kare-kare, crispy crablets, different types of pancit, crispy kangkong, grilled fish, among other pinoy fiesta food. Click here to get in touch with them.

3. Guevarra’s by Chef Laudico – During weekdays, Guevarra’s offer a P499.00 all you can eat buffet for their weekday lunch. They have several function rooms that can accommodate your guests. We are including Guevarra’s as well on our second part of this two-part series as their dinner and holiday / weekend rates are for that price range. Anyway, the dishes are mostly Filipino and Hispanic-Filipino. If you are fine to hold your child’s christening party or birthday in the San Juan area, then Guevarra’s it is! Check out their FB Page for your reservation inquiries.

4. Tong Yang Hotpot (FAIRVIEW and GENSAN BRANCH ONLY) – Why these branches only? It is because only in these branches do they offer lower buffet rates ranging from P329.00 for lunch buffet, and then a P449.00 rate per head for dinner, weekends, and holidays. Gensan Rates meanwhile are at P319.00/pax to P419.00/pax with an option of Beer-All-You-Can for an additional P99.00. So if you love grilling, BBQ, and shabu-shabu, then check out this buffet place for your child’s christening or birthday. 7. Kowloon House – Kowloon House Buffet offers rates of P349.00 for adults, and P259.00 for children both inclusive of bottomless iced tea. The rates are the same for both lunch and dinner. They offer typical Chinese cuisine with soups, yang chow fried rice, pancit, spring rolls, fish fillet, bean curd, among many other entrees! They have several branches, more popular ones are in Diliman and in West Avenue, both in Quezon City. You may check out their FB Page for your inquiries.

So there you have it, hope I have helped you in scouting for a buffet reception venue for your Child’s Christening or Birthday Party. The second one will be about buffet places under P800.00 per head.  For more party information and resources, please check out our parties page.

Kiddie parties can be stressful in general, and it is always a good thing if the whole family can just book a venue altogether, choose a theme, cake and decor and even lootbag and just come back on your child’s birthday.

Even better is that parents can usually just sit back or focus on entertaining the guests and have fun too while the restaurant crew takes care of everything from the food, the serving, the hosting and the games, and then most important of all — the clean up! They can even load all the gifts your kids got plus left overs to your car.

So before i get carried away, here’s a list of Philippine restaurants and fastfood chains that have kiddie birthday party packages.

Fastfood and Restaurants with kiddie birthday party packages:

1. Mc Donald’s — There’s always a special place in the heart of a child (and a child at heart) for the Happy Meal! Most parties i have attended in McDo are simply fun and enjoyable — they have quite entertaining party hosts too! Check out their food packages here. As of publication of this post they have the following themes: Ben 10, AdventureTime, Winx, and Spongebob Squarepants. Their party meals range from P150-190 per guest, and the party package inclusions are: Use of Party Room, Full Hosting, Party amenities, Games and 30 prizes, 1 gift for the celebrant, an appearance by Grimace, Hamburglar or Birdie.

2. Jollibee — most toddlers know Ja’bee and who wouldn’t recognize the big red bee that dances in the kiddie parties? The good news is you can do the booking, the choosing, and the paying online so there is less hassle especially for moms who just can leave their home or work. They have four themes as of posting and this includes Hello Kitty, Jollitown, Jollibee’s FUN-Tastic Factory, and then their Christening- themed party. Party fee starts at P1500 with a minimum guests of up to 30 pax. Here is a link to their online party booking page.

3. Burger king – Does not offer an outright kiddie party package but for P10,000.00 worth of meals you can already use a part of their restaurant as your party venue. This is perfect for moms who want to have flexible party arrangements, and would like to go the DIY route. Check out their FB page here.

If you are planning to buy a kiddie bicycle for your child then this post is for you.

Bikes may be expensive so it is very much understandable if parents will look for an affordable but high quality alternative to those sold in malls and toy stores.

Where to buy cheap but good quality kiddie bikes in the Philippines:

  1. Cartimar — apart from pets and PX goods (pardon the dated term!), you can find imported and local kiddie bikes in the many stalls in this Pasay landmark. My Kuya Billy strongly recommends Cristy’s Bike Shop. Alternatively, you may also wanna check out Paulina’s Bike Shop.
  2. Quiapo — I was surprised to see many baby trikes and kiddie bicycles in this area particularly opposite the road where Quiapo church is or the Espana-bound side. The bikes look just like those that are sold in big supermarkets like the Hypermart or Shopwise. It is super cheap too!

==================================================================

  1. Second-hand stores — if you don’t mind buying a second hand bike or trike for your kid then check out your neighborhood Japan surplus stores because they will surely have two to three in stock. If you do not see one around your neighborhood and you leave in QC then head to Araneta Center particularly where the old Rustan’s is and you will see this Japan surplus store that has kiddie bikes and trikes along with the other baby gears that they sell. Word of caution though — thoroughly clean and recondition the bike first and conduct a thorough check up before giving it to your child.
  2. Neighborhood Bike Stores — I am pretty sure there is at least one in a Major thoroughfare nearest your home and such shops are worth checking out especially if you do not want to be trapped in traffic going to Quiapo or Cartimar. They may be not as cheap but obviously the bikes and trikes they sell are more affordable versus the ones sold in the mall.
  3. Lazada — buying a bike may be a hassle especially if you will just use public transportation to take it home. Why not buy it online instead and since most may be more than Php1,000.00 you can get free shipping from Lazada. If you got it cheaper and you gotta pay for shipping — the cost could just be the same or even less especially if you’d have to take a cab to bring the bike home. Check out this kiddie bike for your little girl –buy it here and this bike for your little boy — buy it here. They also have baby trikes buy it here.
  4. Online shops –OLX has a long list of second hand and brand new bike sellers. You just have to be discerning in your purchase, and be more cautious as some sellers do not have an online store where you can do follow ups if ever. Then there also are other online sellers that are worth checking out:
  • Mars kingdom bikes — has kidide bicycles starting at P2200.00. Check out their FB shop here.
  • Strider No Pedal Balance Bikes – Well I have seen this bike in action, and Achi liked it a lot. They usually do demos where families converge outdoors, so one time, we chanced upon the. It is a little bit pricey, but I think my kid had fun. Here is a link to their website.

So, there you have it. I am sure there are other bike shops where you can buy cheap but good quality bicycle for kids in the Philippines. Again, i did not include the bike shops in Home Depot Ortigas (Al Terra), in BGC, Toys R Us, or Toy Kingdom, and other mall-based bicycle stores simply because the subject of this post is CHEAP but good quality bikes. I am pretty sure they give discounts but since we are talking about cheap all year round, hence the above list.

I will be updating this post as I discover more. Do not forget that along with the bike, purchase safety gears which include helmet, elbow pads, knee pads as well as good quality sneakers and reflectors. Brief your child about what he or she can do and what she cannot, along with other safety measures in riding a bicycle. More importantly, close supervision is the key. Bike with your kid. One of my fondest childhood memories included me and my dad’s regular Sunday cycling around our neighborhood!

Anyway, before I get carried away, here is hoping that if you have the time, hope you could drop by my Facebook page and hit the like button, so you can receive regular updates from Happypinaymommy.com direct on your newsfeed.

If you are wondering where to bring your kids during the Christmas Break then this post is for you.

I have compiled a list of some of the Christmas attractions for kids in Manila 2015 that will surely make those little eyes sparkle.

2015 No Entrance fee Christmas Attractions for Kids in Manila:

1. Ayala Triangle Lights and Sounds Show 2015 — this annual lights festival that happens every night until after new year is hands-down the best place to bring your child in the metro during the holiday season. It is free and it is fab! There are wonderful places to dine in after the show or if you are tight on the budget, why not spread some blankie, have a picnic and eat your packed snacks! Of course go there on a weekend or you’ll get trapped in epic Makati traffic — unless you live just around the area. The Festival of Lights has started already and will run until January 4, 2016. The shows start from 6PM in 30 minute intervals until 10 in the evening. Here is a link to their official website.

2. Policarpio Street, Mandaluyong — if your tot is fond of lights, drive through this street one weekend and she will be super happy — guaranteed. It has long been a tradition in this neighborhood to deck their halls – and lawns – and gardens — and everything actually during Christmas time. No entrance, so free and sans expenses again!!! Here is a great site that will teach you how to get there.

3. Filinvest East Christmas House — this is yet another happy attraction that you can see for free! After trekking to Taytay for your DIY Fabrics, why not go to Filinvest East and treat the kids to a nice Christmas scenery! The home owner really takes the effort to decorate her whole house for the season. Lovely! Here is a video of their display last year.

4. The COD Christmas Show –– Grew up watching this in its original mall in Cubao! Yes the COD Christmas on Display show where my Mama used to bring us. It has been in Greenhills for years now and gladly continues to be one of the free Christmas attractions for children to see on Christmas time.

5. Mall of Asia’s Fireworks Display – Every Friday and Saturday, this gigantic mall features a free pyrotechnic display at their SM By The Bay area. Here is a link to their FB Page.

6. UPDATED: 12/14/2015 Megaworld Reindeer Park, BGC — This is situated near Mc Kinley. There are a lot of Holiday-Colored Reindeer adorned with fun holiday string lights! Drop by anytime on a weekend and you’ll find food trucks nearby! It is also accessible via public transportation as jeeps go through the area too.

7. UPDATED: 12/14/2015 Meralco Liwanag Park — How could i forget about this free pasyalan when we have visited this a couple of times over the years? It is a fun pasyalan which will surely thrill your kids as they can run around the area. There is no trouble finding a parking spot because the main headquarters of Meralco has enough parking spaces after office hours. Your kids will surely enjoy the free mini-train ride, the gigantic nativity scene, the copper-wire sculptures that are so huge. There is also a night bazaar. The Liwanag Park is open to the public until January 6, 2015 (except December 18 in view of the Meralco Corporate Christmas Party), and is open from 6:00pm to 10:00pm during weekdays, and 6:00pm to 11:00pm during weekends.

So there you have it. Hope you could make the trek to any of these places that offer free holiday entertainment for children this Christmas in Manila 2015. I promise to update this post as soon as I learn more free holiday pasyalan within the metropolis.

If you are already planning out the christening or baptism of your baby then this post is for you.

I earlier wrote about the baptismal requirements for Catholics in the Philippines in this post, and we know that the next question is where to buy the outfit or baptismal gown.

I was lucky because Mamita sent a Christening gown for Achi to wear many years ago, since we were able to preserve it, we just have it dry cleaned as needed and it has been passed on to shobe and all.

Anyway, for those looking for baptismal gowns —

Here are some places where you can buy Baptismal gowns outfits in the Philippines:

1. Department Stores — Rustan’s has a great selection of baptismal gowns for you to choose from. If you want something more affordable but still nice then you may head to bigger SM department stores like SM Makati and SM Megamall for better choices. My ex-officemate J, meantime swears by Landmark Makati when it comes to affordable yet fab formal wear for babies and kids so you may want to check it out too.

2. Mothercare — their bigger stores have more choices, and I think I saw some at their BGC branch and in Greenbelt 5.

(Post Continued Below)

You may also want to read:

——————————————————————————————————————————-
3. Baclaran — My friend, D, runs to Baclaran for just about anything. And she says if you have an eye for fab designs then you can just land in Baclaran a more affordable version of the one you saw at the mall. She says the christening gowns here has the same quality as those in the department stores at less than half the price! The stalls are just in the periphery of the Baclaran Church, so after paying a visit, why not shop around?

4. Lazada — if you do not want to be bothered by the epic traffic situation then Lazada is your best bet. They have these cute little buy christening outfits that are quite cheap like this baby tuxedo set, which you can buy here for P999.00. They have quite a few gowns like this chiffon dress, which you can buy here  for just P800.00.

5. Baobao babies — this FB store has traditional christening gowns that are on hand. The prices range from P2,800 to P3K++ as of posting. The gowns come with caps and booties. These are really nice and lovely – white and ecru usually. Check out the designs here.

6. Celestina & Co. — if your baby is somewhat older, or if you want a non-traditional gown and just a formal wear for her then this is the online store to go to. I love this shop actually because it makes choosing clothes for babies and young kids a lot easier. They have tons of accessories to. Check out their website here.

7. UPDATED 11/19/2015: Periwinkle — Thanks to my dear friend Mareng H, for letting me know that this shop sells Christening outfits too. Apparently my inaanak, Sophie, wore a Periwinkle Pina Gown during her Christening. She says the range of Christening outfits there are around P2,000.00 at that time. Periwinkle has branches in ATC, all Rustan’s Department Stores, Shangri-la mall, Eastwood, and even in Marquee Mall, plus a host of other bigger and popular malls. They also have an online shopping site through Zalora, here.

8. UPDATED: Sept 03, 2016: Cudsly.com –– This shopping website also has christening and baptismal gowns for both boys and girls. Check out the selection here.

9. UPDATED: Sept 03, 2016: Shopee.ph — Find brand new  and pre-loved baptismal and Christening gowns in this new shopping and selling site. Download their mobile app via the app store or google play, or shop from their website here.

So there you have it. I am sure there are other places and Online Shops where you may buy Christening gowns and baptismal outfits in the Philippines. I will be updating this post as I discover more. For the online stores, I included the links of the shops so that you could personally check on their prices and product availability. If you have the time, hope you could drop by my Facebook page and hit the like button, so you can receive regular updates from Happypinaymommy.com direct on your newsfeed.

To say that kids love clay will be an under-statement. If I want Achi to not bug me a lot during the day so that i could post in my blog, all I have to do is to give her her clay box and she will while away her time.

The good thing here is that we do not have to buy clay for the kids all the time. We can actually make one with them, and let them play with it. So basically it is like shooting two birds with one stone!

Here are some DIY Clay Recipes you can make with your kids:

  1. No Cook Play Dough – This recipe calls for super simple ingredients that is most likely available in your pantry! Check out this no-cook recipe from homeschooling-ideas.com here.
  2. Soap Clay – Are you looking for a clay dough recipe that smells good? Then head on over at clay-it-now.com and check out this recipe  You may however need to run to the pharmacy to buy some glycerin (yes I bought a small bottle at mercury for our DIY bubbles at around P40.00), and some Tapioca Starch.

 3. Cloud Dough – Achi super super loves this! It really pays to have food coloring on hand since it makes cloud dough more fun! It is super easy to make and smells good too! Check out this recipe from happyhooligans.

4. Super Easy DIY Play Dough – Australian website Best Recipes has this super easy to make DIY Play dough recipe that even little achi can make! Check it out here. I promise no special trips to the store because it only needs flour, salt, oil, and food coloring. It is that easy!

5. Gelatin-Based Playdoh – Do you have a gelatin box lying around the house? This is the best time to make use of it. Check out this easy DIY Play Dough Recipe from the website Modern Parents Messy Kids. Enjoy!

Where to stay with your kids in Surigao City? The Tavern it is. (Photo taken from Tavern’s Official FB Page)

We went to Surigao City and it was really nice to be in a peaceful, pollution free city where seafood is just great!

If you are wondering where stay with your kids in Surigao City, then your best bet is the Tavern Hotel.

It is the kids’ first time there, and we would not want to burden the relatives we will be visiting so we decided on booking a hotel.

At first I was really hesitant because unlike in our kid-free days, we could just arrive sans stalking a hotel, but now we have to be more conscious.

It was a good thing someone recommended Tavern to us and staying there for a couple of days was a great decision.

They may not have a pool, but almost all the niceties that you will want to have when traveling with young kids and babies, are provided for.

The room is super clean, wide enough for a small family with young kids to stay in, nice view, no mosquitoes at all, and did I say CLEAN? (yes super emphasis on that). They also have super nice and courteous staff that are so kid-friendly too!

The TAVERN is also Cloth Diapering-friendly because:

  1. The bathroom has a bidet
  2. The sink area is wide and comfy enough for washing nappies
  3. There is enough space in the veranda area to hang and sun washed CDs (not in the rails of course – they have lounge chairs in the balcony where you can hang your sipit-filled hangers)

(Post Continued Below)

Anyway, going back to the non-Cloth Diapering-Addict topic, they also have a good restaurant frequented by locals. I say take advantage of the seafood there because Surigao Seafood is soooo fresh. They also have a Dencio’s Style Inuman-slash-restaurant next to the hotel building, which has a live band.

The view from our room (We got the Standard Sea View Balcony) was so nice, Achi enjoyed just looking at the sea. If I am not mistaken we got it for less than P2,500.00 and this is not AGODA rate mind you. Direct to the hotel rate, so you can just imagine how affordable it could get if we got an advanced booking from those websites.

where to stay with kids in surigao city

Here is the view from our room 🙂 Just lovely.

Anyway going back, the location is also great. It is near a lot of places if interest in the city. It is just across the boulevard, which is sooo clean! You won’t believe how you can almost see the sea floor (is that what you call it?) standing in the boulevard. Almost zero garbage ha! Of course there are a lot of seafood restaurants you can eat from so good luck if you are trying to lose weight.

And before I forget, if and when you need to buy anything, there is a convenience store right across the hotel, which is fairly well-stocked even with PX Goods.

Well there are a number of tourist destinations in the area where our relatives toured us, but that is for another post!

So there you go, if you are trying to find a kid-friendly hotel in Surigao City, The Tavern Hotel is your best option J

If you have plans to go to the United States for a vacation with your little one in tow, then the best time to apply for a US Visa is now.

Why? Because you will not have to wait in line. Your baby will be prioritized, and you could even be out of the embassy in less than an hour! Yes you read it right J

So here are the US Visa requirements for babies in the Philippines

After of course getting a passport for your kiddo (click here to ready my post re: passport requirements for babies and young kids) all you have to do is head on over at the US embassy’s website, specifically this page which contains payment information. You’ll be glad to know that if you are a BPI or Bancnet Account holder, you no longer need to pay at a BPI bank branch (like what we did), because now, you can pay ONLINE! Just make sure to create your baby’s profile first using the information in this link. The instructions on online payment can be found here.

Anyway, if you are not a BPI or Bancnet account holder, you can print the deposit slip in the website, and pay the 160 USD Visa Fee, in local currency though, hand over the slip and the cashier will give you a receipt which you have to keep for future reference. (Please note that this post is published Aug 2015, so better check with the website again for an updated amount).

(Post continued below)

=====================================================

===========================================================

After paying the fees in a BPI Branch, you may now fill-out your child’s DS-160 form. You will need the number in your baby’s accomplished and submitted form when you schedule your child’s interview. After completing the DS-160, create a profile for your baby in the US Embassy’s System, and once created you may now schedule an appointment. Prepare your child’s passport number, UV Visa Fee Payment receipt number, and the ten (10) digit barcode number from your DS-160 confirmation page.

Once you have the schedule, prepare what you have to bring to the embassy like your passports (yours and tthe baby’s), the copy of the appointment letter, the DS-160 Confirmation page, and a recent picture of your baby that adheres to US Visa Requirements. You and your baby then just have to head on over at the US Embassy (of course with a time allowance ahead of your scheduled time just to be sure — grabe traffic lagi). Once there, skip the line and just go directly to the guard (yes they have special lines for babies, senior citizens, and those with special needs!).

Once you reach the security check area, approach the guards (or any embassy staff who may be doing the checking) so that they could prioritise you and the baby. DO NOT feel guilty about cutting the line. Since most Americans do not employ nannies, they know how it feels to be in line with an infant, hence the special treatment given to parents with young children. Again, during the taking of biometrics info for your baby, you do not need to line up for the same reason, and same with the fingerprinting section where they would just actually put a stamp on the baby’s passport since those tiny little fingers do not have discernible fingerprints yet.

You will then be led to an area for babies, senior-citizens, and special needs applicants so that you could be prioritized for the interview.

In the occasions that we applied for the kids’ visa, we just presented their passport, the copy of the appointment letter, the DS-160 Confirmation page, and the photo. We also brought our passports with valid US Visa. In those occasions we have been asked when are we likely to travel and how long are we going to stay there, and where will we be staying. Some parents opt to bring other legal documents like bank records, and it is up to you if you wish to do the same. In our case, the consul never asked to see any of those docs. In fact, i have noticed that they are usually happy to see babies during interviews.

Anyway, once everything is okay, you will be then told to wait for the baby’s passport to be delivered to your address usually in a week’s time.

Are your weekends starting to get boring? Are the rains confining you and the very energetic kids at home?

Worry no more mommies. Get busy in the kitchen and hit two birds with one stone. Have a “cooking activity” with the kids and prepare them meryenda at the same time! Perfect weekend bonding!

Here are some fun meryenda recipes you can prepare with your kids:

1. Milo balls — Here is a fun recipe of this sure fire yummy meryenda that will make any tiny tot, with tiny hands, excited to eat what they have just prepared. Just do not forget to have the brush their teeth after. Check out the recipe here. If you do not have access to arrow root biscuits the local MARIE biscuit is an excellent alternative.

2. Palitaw — I remember when i was younger, there was an episode of Batibot showing the kids how to make palitaw. ISince then i have always begged my Inay to buy Galapog in the market so we can make palitaw. How fun! even the process of roasting the sesame seeds and mixing sugar to it will surely delight your kids! Here is a recipe you can follow.

3. Ginataang Bilo-Bilo — Just like the palitaw, i have always had a blast whenever inay puts me in charge of making this for the Guinataang Halo-halo, my mom usually requests her to make. I tried cooking this with Achi, and she is just so happy that there is a clay-like food that is glutinous rice balls! Check out this recipe.

4. Jelly popsicle — You can definitely make jelly Popsicle even if you do not have the molds! Achi had so much fun when we did this recipe, and just used our ice cube tray, and stock hard plastic straw. Of course it would be best if you have those colorful popsicle makers! Here is the recipe we used. Just use any type and brand of juice that you like, and any type and brand of your favorite powdered gelatin 🙂

5. Polvoron — Another childhood meryenda i used to make. Achi had so much fun with molding these and wrapping them in colorful Japanese paper. Try it in your hoe. There are many variations already, like ones covered in chocolate, or those infused with pinipig, peanuts of what have you. Let your kids decide. Here is the recipe.

6. Buko Pandan — This is super cool! From making the green jelly and cutting it into whatever shape you like (instead of the usual cubes), to shaving buco strips, and mixing in all the ingredients! Kids are just so happy when making this fun meryenda that can also be your dessert come dinner time. Here is an easy to follow recipe.

7. Pizza Pandesal — This is very easy, and definitely the kids will love the spreading the pizza sauce, grating cheese then using it as toppings, putting in ham and pineapple. Super perfect for those afternoons when everything tends to be boring. Fun times! Check out the recipe here.  Achi and i have also ventured into making pizza with a store-bought pizza dough, but that is for another blog post 🙂

If you are looking for more ideas, check out this book that my sister in law gifted me recently. it contains a whopping 200 recipes that both you and your kids will love!!! and these are healthy recipes at that. I was actually asking her to procure it for me but tadaaaaa, she gave it as a surprise when she came home from the States!!!

Anyway, so there you go, hope you all had wonderful ideas on what meryenda recipes you can prepare with your kids. They will surely be thrilled to hep you it in the kitchen, so let those little hands do the prepping!

Have  a great weekend everyone!

SUMMER ACTIVITIES FOR KIDS

Six Summer Activities for Kids that they will Absolutely Love

As promised, here is the second installment of the Budget-Friendly Kids Summer Activities. This time we will be focusing on house activities that will guarantee hours of fun for the kidlets.

Budget Summer Activities for the Kids

Budget Friendly Summer Activities for the Kids

  1. Pretend Lemonade Stand – Just outside your house, set up a small table and a big old plastic container where the kids could mix some water, yellow food coloring, and pretend lemons using cardboard. Give them ladles and plastic cups and there goes your instant lemonade stand! If you want them to get more creative, ask them to come up with a signage!

  1. Fairy Soup Kitchen – Let the kids gather stones, flowers and leaves. Give them now old pots, ladles and plastic bowls, and allow then to mix up what they collected with water. Sprinkle some food colouring and they now have their fairy soup. Guaranteed to keep them pre occupied for a couple of hours!

  1. Swim— If you do not have a pool nearby, why not invest in a small inflatable pool or if your kids are smaller, your trusty “batya.” Just make sure that you supervise your kids, because young ones especially can drown in an instant

  1. Garden Hose Bath – Since water sprinklers are not too common here in our country, why not let the kids bathe using a water hose, of course with the supervision of a competent adult!

  1. Pretend Laundry – Bubbles and Water make children so happy! Allow your kids to play with some dirty clothes, a small basin and some kid-friendly bubbling soap. This will make them feel like adults especially if they see you doing this too. J

  1. Blow Bubbles – Definitely a favorite among kids! Instead of buying them expensive bubbles from toy stores, why not recreate our childhood bubble solution by picking out gumamela leaves and flowers in the neighborhood, add dishwashing liquid or detergent power, mix up, and then your kids now have an instant bubble solution!

Hope you enjoy the summer with these budget friendly kids’ play activities. Please drop by once again for the third installment of the budget summer activities for kids. If you have other creative play suggestions, please feel free to share in the comment box below. Thank you!

Budget Friendly Summer Drinks

Keep Kids Cooler this summer with these snacks and Beverages they can help make

PART 1: Budget-Friendly Summer Drinks and Beverages for Kids

The heat is on and summer is here. It is also vacation time so most of moms are now on the lookout for fun and budget friendly summer activities for kids that could pre-occupy the kids around the house.

I will be doing a series on how to keep kids cool this summer – of course on a budget!

First in line are cool drinks and snacks that kids can make.

Here are five cool beverages and snacks that will not only quench their thirst, it will also keep them busy and who knows, might instill a joy in cooking:

1. Traditional Ice Candy – Mommies, we are all familiar with the one peso each ice candy. We can re-create this experience for our kids and all we need are ice candy cellophane for the ice candy, plus juice. If you have extra food color then throw them in too! The kids will have a lot of fun mixing the juice up, putting fruit bits into the ice candy bag, adding drops of food color, and of course funneling the juice into the cellophane! Easy to do, yummy to eat!

2. Make Fruit Slushes or Shakes – This is one of the best summer activities for kids, simpl because adults love sipping these kinds of chill bevs too! Using over ripe fruits sold in markets and groceries, why not make icy fruit shakes for the kids. Allow them to help by giving them tasks like spooning out the mangoes, or peeling the dalandan!

3. “Sa Malamig” – Let your kids experience this drink by buying buco from your friendly vendor. Give the kids the opportunity to help you transfer the buco juice into your pitcher or bowl. Allow them too to help you get buco strips, and mix the drink in the pitcher or punch bowl. Don’t forget the ice cubes, and a bit of sugar too!

Summer Drinks on a Budget

Colorful and Cool Drinks that will not hurt mommy’s pocket

4. Snow Cones – If you have an ice shaver at home, this should be simple and fun. Before shaving ice, ask the kids to make a concentrated mix of their favorite fruit juice flavor. Add in drops of similarly-colored food colouring. Shave ice, put in cones or glasses, then pour in the flavorings! Give them a little spoon and it is like a mini trip to Mexico!

5. Local Lemonada – Since lemons are very expensive nowadays, why not use calamansi for this. Allow the kids to squeeze calamansi juice and remove their seeds using strainers. Mix the juice up with sugar and ice cubes, and put in Mason Jars. You may want to wash some calamansi too, and slice up some for an added décor. Perfect with bending or paper straws!

6. Mais Con Hielo – I was supposed to say Halo-Halo, but in the spiit of a tight budget, let’s just use a can of whole kernel corn, whatever milk is available in the fridge, and a bit of sugar. This is a treat most kids will love. If you have a tall glass then let them eat it right there! Perfect cheap and easy.

How To Make Colorful Easter Eggs for the Kids this Coming Sunday

Easter is just around the corner and we all know that Easter Egg Hunting is one fun activity that our kids enjoy.

I have great childhood memories about aster egg hunting, as my mom used to stage one for us every Easter Sunday. After the village Easter egg hunt, we go home as well to our own house to hunt for eggs. My mom cooked the eggs, lets us design/paint it, and then my older brother hides the eggs for us littles. I was one happy tradition in our family.

Fast forward thirty years later I am now the one staging egg hunts for Little H. Last year she was old enough to know how to paint the eggs. It was fun.

how to make colorful Easter Eggs

Take the Easter Fun a notch higher with Do-It-Yourself Colorful Easter Eggs

Sharing with you instructions on how to make colorful Easter eggs at home for it to be fun for your kids to paint and design.
You will need:
1. 6 Eggs Per Child (Just buy small ones in the market so it is cheaper)
2. Food Coloring
3. Vinegar
4. Pot
5. Water
6. Materials for design: small stickers, white crayon, rubber bands
7. Cups
Procedure:
1. Boil the eggs
2. While the egg is being boiled prepare cups of different color by placing tap water on them, adding a tsp of food coloring per cup and then a tsp of vinegar
3. Once the eggs are cooked, put it in iced water to stop the cooking process, and at the same time cool the eggs enough for little hands to handle.
4. Once cooled, have the kidlets decide on what designs they would like. They can:

a. Just have some plain colored egg which they may design later on with crayons, oil pastels or markers
b. Use rubber bands to create stripes on each egg. (Put a rubber band on the egg before dipping into the vinegar-food color solution)
c. Use a white crayon to draw designs on the egg. The final dsign will come out after the egg is dipped in the vinegar-food color solution.
d. Stickers before or after dipping to the solution.
5. Once the kids have thought and made the designs, you can now dip each egg into the solution, mix and match colors, dry the eggs up, and then start hiding them!
This were the not-so-artistic eggs that little H and I came up with last Easter:

ENJOY, and till next post mommies!
