Daily devotional: Mandatory Rest

In a fast-paced world that glorifies busyness and productivity, our Heavenly Father continues to invite us to take time to ourselves and rest. His call is in fact not a suggestion, but a commandment itself that is meant to protect us.

Psalm 90:17
Psalm 90:17

“There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; for anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from their works, just as God did from his. Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will perish by following their example of disobedience.” Hebrews 4:9-11

Several instances mentioned in the Gospels, described Jesus taking time to commune with the Heavenly Father, and rest from day-to-day service. If we follow His example, we will be shielded from the impact of burn-out and stress in our lives.

“Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.” So they went away by themselves in a boat to a solitary place.” Mark 6:31-32

To apply this teaching in our present life, responding to Jesus’ call means we get to have time to reflect, recharge, and enjoy His blessings. And because He loves us, this is part of His will. After all, God never called us to lead a life we cannot find joy and peace in. Jesus came to give us the abundant life lived in His peace and presence.

“Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” Psalm 90:17

Thank you for reading through our devotional today. I invite you to ponder on Exodus 20:8-11 to dig deeper on today’s topic.

Reflection Question: When was the last time that you felt truly rested? Do you feel guilty taking time for yourself? What could make you feel assured that God wants you to recharge and enjoy His blessings too?

Conversation with the Lord: Heavenly Father, thank you that you are so gracious, you think of our health and emotional well-being too. Thank you that you are such a loving Father. Give me the grace to take hold of the rest that you ask me to take, and not feel guilty for taking the time to restore and relax. Amen.
