The post Low budget recipe ideas for week 2 of Sept 2023 appeared first on Happy Pinay Mommy.
]]>Another Monday rolled by with the grace of God, and here is yet another fresh list of low-budget yet highly delicious (and nutritious!) ulam recipe ideas for your pinoy loved ones!
If you are new to our website and this series, you can restart here for the past lists of weekly ulam ideas that will help you stay within your budget. Again our budget is about Php150.00 to Php200.00 for a main dish that could feed four to five adults. Of course the budget for the rice is not yet included
Anyway, without further ado, here is our list of budget ulam ideas for the week:
1. Pork and Sayote Guisado. Some of us tend to forget about Sayote, and just remember it when it is time to cook Tinola. But this sweet and crunchy vegetable can be used weekly in our meals without compromising our food rotation. This week we can use it in Pork and Sayote Guisado! Here is a good recipe.
2. Chicken Katsu with Cabbage Salad. Use Chicken Breast or Chicken thigh that you debone (debone it yourself because it is cheaper than buying thigh fillet – just watch youtube tutorials it is easy). Flatten it by using a mallet or back of your frying pan. Season and then prepare from breading. Just buy a small packaging of panko bread crumbs. You can omit egg to save money and just use a flour-water mixture as your wet batter, then dredge the flattened chicken on the Panko or Japanese breadcrumbs. Fry and drain excess oil. As for the cabbage salad, just slice the cabbage thinkly like in tonkatsu restaurants and serve either with vinaigrette (olive-oil-sugar-and-vinegar dressing, thousand island dressing, or just whatever mayo you have at home. The kids will love this!
3. Storm Soup and Crunchy Tawilis. One of my good friends said that she makes storm soup whenever there are a lot of left over vegetables in her refrigerator. She said she learned it from her sailor husband who cooks this soup dish in their ship. Anyway, just gather all the left over vegetables in your chiller, steam and then osterize. Heat in a pot and season to taste. Add cornstarch slurry (1 tbsp cornstarch mixed in 2 tbsps water), then thicken. Serve the soup along with crispy fried tawilis or any favorite fish that is economical and in season
4. Lumpiang Hubad with Chicken Breast. I have always loved lumpiang hubad because it is delicious, nutritious and easy to cook. For this dish, just add up to 300 kg of bite-sized slices or minced chicken breast to make it more appetizing for the kiddos. Take a look at this recipe.
5. Tuna Patties and Chilled Cucumber Carrot Salad. This is easy to make and for sure, the kids will love it. I make it extra special by freezing the tuna patties a bit, and then dredging it in panko before frying, but that is just me. You can just follow this exact recipe. For the cucumber and carrot chilled salad, just slice the carrots thinly. Put some salt and set aside for at least 10 minutes. Wring off excess moisture. Thinly slice the cucumber. and then combine with the carrots. Refrigerate. The dressing is up to you – you can use a vinaigrette dressing, thousand island dressing, or miso-mayo. Life is good, choose whatever makes you happy!
6. Popcorn chicken and eggplant salad. We are of the idea that making popcorn chicken is complicated but it is not! Just slice deboned chicken thighs into bite sized pieces, season it and dredge in wet batter (either beaten eggs, milk, or water and flour mixture), and then dredge in cake flour seasoned with chicken powder, garlic powder, onion powder and pepper. Deep fry then set aside.
As for the eggplant salad, this is your usual Ilocano-style steamed eggplant with freshly diced tomatoes and onions, and then drizzled with vinegar. Yummy combo when paired with steaming hot rice!
7. Sweet and Sour Chicken-Tofu Meatballs. Pork meatballs is great, but chicken tofu meatballs are morre nutritious and economical. Just sub 1/4 of the chicken needed with a block of tokwa and tofu, and then follow this recipe.
So that’s it. Hope you can check out our new list again next week.
At this point, may I share with you one of my favorite bible passages from the Letter of St. Paul to the Corinthians:
“Finally, brothers and sisters, rejoice! Strive for full restoration, encourage one another, be of one mind, live in peace. And the God of love and peace will be with you.” 2 Corinthians 13:11
Thank you for stopping by and till next post!

]]>The post Left over make over: Sinigang na Lechon Kawali appeared first on Happy Pinay Mommy.
]]>LEFT OVER MAKE OVER. Sinigang kagabi, mini lechon kawali na ngayong tanghali. Asim kilig lechon kawali that is yummy just the same.
In our household we try our best not to waste food. Left overs are eaten the next day, and is consumed as much as possible. Bukod sa mahal ang bilihin, I teach my children na nakakahiya naman sa Panginoon na magsayang kami ng grasya. I also make an effort to not cook too much para di din sila mag sawa agad at isang “replay” lang ang ulam.
To balance the iwas sawa factor, and conservation of time and energy in meal preparation, i usually freeze a portion of a big meal that I cook so that the following week we can have a ready to reheat meal in the freezer. Di na gagastos pa sa food delivery o pag eat out when too busy to cook. More meal planning tips can be found in our meal plans and recipes section here.
I learned this particular leftover makeover from a family friend who mentioned that she cooks a big potful of sinigang each time so that the next day she can make lechon kawali. I got curious, and oo nga it tastes good!
So what I did was i heated oil enough to deep fry the liempo pieces that I have. While waiting for it to heat through i removed the liempo pieces from the sinigang broth and pat dried it using paper towel. You can also use a clean muslin for this purpose.
When the oil is hot enough, i deep fried the oieces until crispy. Drained the oil from it and served alongside our gulay lunch. No waste, extra ulam pa!
So what is your favorite left-over make over?? I posted the above photo of my son getting a portion of the sinigang na lechon kawalu and asked my IG friends about their favorite left over make over. Here are some of the answers I got, which of course I am sharing with you ladies because it is a good source of info for our home tipid meals. I also added some of mine.
1. Menudillo to Arroz a la Cubana or omelette
2. Adobo to Crispy Adobo Flakes or Adobo Rice
3. Tinapang Bangus to tinapa fried rice.
4. Sinaing na tulingan, fried the next day or cooked with gata
5. Menudo as palaman sa pandesal the next morning.
6. Lechon or lechon kawali to lechon paksiw the next day
7. Left over gulay turned into okonomiyaki
8. Lechon Manok to either chicken sisig or chicken sandwich spread
9. Breaded fish fillet to sweet and sour fish fillet the next day
10. Pritong isda to sarciado the following meal
So there you have it, hope you were able to pick up something from today’s blog post. For more recipes and mealplans hope you can chej out our recipes section, follow our Pinterest board, check out out IG stream or browse our Facebook recipe albums.
Till next post!

]]>The post Easy Chicken Lomi Recipe appeared first on Happy Pinay Mommy.
]]>Rainy days call for piping hot noodle soups like Lomi. I never thought that this easy chicken lomi soup is easy to cook because it looks so complicated — a dish only veteran moms and grandmothers can confidently cook.
(Related Post: Breastfeeding Soup Recipes for Moms)
But all these assumptions of mine are unfounded, because apparently cooking lomi soup is not that complicated. Budget-wise it is also easy on the pocket because
The first step is to find fresh lomi, which can be bought from the supermarket or your suki in the market. Be mindful of the expiration dates and if there is not that is indicated, ask when it was delivered and when will it perish. Store the fresh lomi noodles in the ref until the day of use — ideally within two days from date of purchase.
So without further ado, here’s our —
Ingredients:
One pack fresh lomi
One egg
Boiled chicken breast, flaked or sliced thinly
Pinch of pepper
Optional: Patis and sesame oil
1. Wash the noodles thoroughly in water. Fully immerse it in water that has just boiled for about three minutes, then drain. Wash again and set aside.
3. Add the chicken and then the stock or plain water.
(Related Post: Yummy Soup Recipes for the Rainy Season)
4. Bring to a boil then simmer for about five minutes.
5. Add the drained noodles and cook for about 10 minutes.
6. Add in the cabbage and the carrots.
7. Beat the egg in a bowl and then pour into the pot. Stir the mixture until the beaten egg has been cooked
8. Add in the cornstarch mixture or the slurry and stir continuously until the lomi soup thickens.
9. AT THIS POINT YOU CAN NOW GET A SEPARATE PORTION FOR YOUR BABY AND TODDLER SO THEIR SOUP WILL BE UNSEASONED.
10. You can now season the lomi soup accordingly with salt and pepper or with patis if you wish.
11. Simmer again for about two minutes. Then serve.
12. Optional: add a dash of sesame oil prior to serving.

]]>The post How to Cook Bagis appeared first on Happy Pinay Mommy.
]]>Bagis is apparently a Kapampangan dish that makes use of ground beef, and has a hint of tart and citrusy flavor and is mostly served spicy. You can always omit the chili though and it will still taste just as great.
Bagis is perfect for rice toppings and an even perfect baon for the school or office.
I was fortunate to have come across this dish from a fellow IG Mama, @todaysbaon as she shared the recipe in one of her posts.
What I like about Bagis is it is a dish with very simple ingredients that won’t set you back by more than a hundred pesos to serve a family of two adults and two grown children (i.e. seven years old and up). And it is so easy to prepare. All the ingredients you need are right there in your pantry for sure, or a quick trip to your suking tindahan.

]]>The post How to cook easy Misua Patola Soup (P100 ulam idea) appeared first on Happy Pinay Mommy.
]]>Let’s cook! Misua patola is one of our favorite soupy ulams. Even my picky eater of an eldest daughter, Achie loves it. Easy misua patola soup is also a very affordable dish that can be prepared in about half an hour.
The Misua Patola Soup recipe is simple but very hearty. It can be eaten by itself or can be eaten over steaming white rice.
There are different types of misua in the grocery, and much as i wanted to buy the boxed ones which has bigger noodles, they ran out of stock the day i did my food shopping.
I grew up eating this dish with the patola sliced into round shape. I modified the slice of the patola in my version though so that it will be easier for my baby and the toddler to grab the patola strips. This also makes it safer for them to eat. Yes you read it right, they grab it because sometimes they become impatient about using their utensils when they are eating their favorite misua.

=======================================
=====================================
For those who may not be familiar as to how to cook this dish, here is a rough guide:
Ingredients for the Misua Patola Soup:
Cooking Procedure:
1. Saute onions and garlic.
2. Add lean ground pork (about 200-250 grams) – i usually pre-boil my ground pork, but it is up to you if you want to saute it thawed or pre-boiled.
3. Add in the patola and then about three cups of chicken stock or plain filtered water. Chicken stock can be easily made by boiling chicken bones along with onions, garlic, and cabbage or any extra veggie you have at home.
4. Cook for about 5-10 minutes.
5. Add in the misua and let cook for another three minutes.
6. Just eyeball the amount of water since misua may absorb much and you may have to add more.
7. Once the misua is cooked, YOU CAN NOW SEPARATE A PORTION FOR YOUR BABY AND TODDLER SO THAT THEY CAN HAVE IT UNSEASONED.
8. You can now season the misua-patola for adult consumption. You can season it with either patis or salt, and the some pepper.
9. Serve immediately.

Much that i wanted to prepare a sizzling version, i dont have a gas stove where I could heat up the cast iron plate so let’s just make do with this kid-friendly version.
This one is easy to make but it requires some prepping. Preboiling of chicken breast, and separate pre- boiling of chicken liver, and shredding (or mincing if you wish) of the cooked chicken breast.

]]>The post How to Cook Tortang Dulong (P100 Ulam Idea) appeared first on Happy Pinay Mommy.
]]>I have been meaning to cook Tortang Dulong since I heard it is nutritious, and of course, it tastes great. We usually order this in a take-out place and it is served crunchy. So when we were shopping at the grocery, we saw this and the mister suggested that we give it a try.
So I immediately researched for the best way to cook it as an ulam (click here to know more information about dulong as a fish). For one, I know I can include it in my list of P100.00 ulam ideas, because this fish is not costly! I’m sure it is even cheaper in wet markets.
The photo of the finished product (i used 50 grams — about 72 pesos) actually does not include the patties that I separated for the toddler and the baby (theirs were unsalted). I can say that about 300 grams will do, and that amount of fish, plus the other ingredients for the batter can be about a hundred pesos all in all. Definitely tortang dulong or duloing omelette is not bad for an ulam recipe for four!
So this is the batter mixture inspired by the recipe of my super idol, virtual cooking mentor Chef Vanjo of Panlasang Pinoy. Since i think my dulong is double the amount of what he mentioned in the recipe, here are the measurements for those of you who may want to give it a try:

]]>The post Filipino Budget Ulam Ideas below 100 Pesos 2017 Edition appeared first on Happy Pinay Mommy.
]]>Our under P100 annual budget ulam series continues to be two of the most widely read posts here in our little blog. And since we are still in the first quarter of the year, I figured, why not come up with a 2017 edition this early? If you haven’t read the first two, click here for the 2015 edition, and here for the 2016 version.
Anyway, there are many recipes that I have recently learned about while browsing the internet and I would like to share them with you my fellow homemakers. A viand under P100 does not have to feel like “tinipid” because as you will be able to read later, it can be yummy and nutritious at the same time.
So here’s this year’s version of —
1. Tokwa and Bokchoy – This is super affordable yet delicious and filling. You can actually substitute tokwa with tofu, and bokchoy with either kangkong, spinach or even pechay. Anyway for the procedure fry about four squares of tokwa evenly. Then slice into cubes. Saute onion and garlic, then the tokwa. Add in the diced bokchoy or pechay or kangkong. After which add some oyster sauce (eyeball it or add 1-2 tbsp). Then add in a cornstarch with water mixture. I dissolve a tablespoon of cornstarch in 1/4 cup of water. Let it simmer. Check the taste and season as needed with soy sauce. Optional: Drizzle a bit of sesame oil.
2. Binagoongang Talong — Warning — this will make you eat a lot of rice! Anyway, talong and bagoong are too good to be cheap so you can still buy a bit of panggisang pork for sahog. I usually choose a slice of liempo and ask the butcher to slice it for sauteeing, instead of buying the readily sliced “pork saute” since the ready-made version is just so fatty. Here’s a link to this delicious ulam.
=============================================================
3. Tuna nuggets. This is a simple kiddie recipe i came across with in internet parenting forums. My kids absolutely love tuna but wouldnt it be nice if theyd eat it differently sometimes? Check out this super affordable recipe that makes use of a can of tuna, several individual packs of skyflakes, and then some seasonings and oil. Bonus is this can also be a great baon food for your grade schooler. Here’s a link to a video instructional guide.
4. Vegetarian Okoy – This recipe is not just under P100, it can even be included in your child’s Tamang Kain recipe (of course minus all of the seasonings). You can interchange the veggies actually, come just use togue, others kalabasa and carrots, some just plain malunggay and kalabasa. Experiment and enjoy. Check out the ingredients and cooking procedure here.
5. Baguio Beans with Giniling – This is super yummy especially when your greens are super fresh. Just saute onions, garlic, tomatoes and then about ¼ kilo of pork or beef giniling (whatever you have in your freezer actually). Add I the Baguio beans, and then a little bit of water. Season with a bit of soy sauce or oyster sauce depending on your preference. Simmer until the beans are cooked, and then serve.
6. Tinolang Tahong – Depending on the size of the mussels, it would sell for about P45-60.00 per kilo. The only other sahog you will need for this are onions, ginger, and possibly malunggay and dahon ng sili from the neighborhood (some add lemongrass though) J This recipe is perfect for moms who just gave birth or are breastfeeding (click here for more pinoy breastfeeding recipes). Here’s how to cook tinolang halaan.
7. Sisig na Puso ng Saging – Want a healthier and cheaper version of Sisig? Check this recipe out from Mely’s Kitchen. This will also be great for the coming holy week.

]]>Nowadays, we have to be more intentional on what we are to feed our families. We have to serve meals that are not only delicious, but nutritious as well.
In this day and age where time is of the essence and gone are the days where you can afford to cook two ulams per meal –both time and money-wise– it is important to have in our arsenal vegetable recipes that can be a ‘stand-alone’ ulams because of the taste and nourishment it provides.
1. Laing — This one is just so yummy and nutritious. Who can go wrong with gabi and coconut oil and some bits of pork or shrimp that are, in the vernacular, nagmamantika? Check out a good recipe from Panlasang Pinoy here.
2. Gising-Gising — another recipe that utilizes coconut milk, this yummy dish can be spicy or not but for sure you would really need loads of steaming white rice. Get the recipe from Casa Veneracion here.
(Post continued below)
———————————————————————————————————————–
3. Misua-patola –– you will need some giniling or diced pork, misua, and patola and you’ve got yourself a piping-hot healthy ulam that even your kid will like. Take a look at this recipe from magluto.com.
4. Ginataang Sitaw at Kalabasa — this is great actually even without gata as plain guisado alone. It is great whether with small shrimps as sahog or thinly sliced liempo. This is a good recipe from pinoycookingrecipes.com. Just omit the shrimp to cut down on costs. It will still taste superb.
5. Vegetable kare kare — just buy some pechay, eggplant, and sitaw plus kare kare mix then take out the bagoong, game na!!! Here is a simple recipe to follow.
Hope you all got some great ideas from this post. ]]>The post Filipino Lumpia Recipes under P100.00 appeared first on Happy Pinay Mommy.
]]>Lumpia is one distinct Filipino food that is both delicious and economical to make.
It is so distinct that my hipag tells me, this is what is usually being requested as potluck contribution from pinoys whenever there are gatherings in the US.
Anyway, for families who are trying to stay within the budget i compiled Lumpia recipes that are under P100.00 to make and can feed at least a family of four.
1. Lumpiang togue. So yummy yet so cheap. Lumpiang togue is so good that it can be eaten as ulam or meryend. In fact it is being sold by ambulant vendors with the signature spicy suka in used mineral water bottles. Check out this recipe.
2. Lumpiang Tuna – i know lumpia is not the healthiest of food because it is deep fried but you can somehow balance it out by filling it with fish. Consider prepping this recipe but omit the jalapeno so that it would be kid-friendly.
——————————————-
————————————————
3. Lumpiang Hubad — This does not cost much especially since the main protein used is firm tofu which you can get for less than P40.00 for a big block. Besides, i think it is the healthiest among all the recipes i have compiled for this post since no deep frying is involved. Check out the recipe here.
4. Lumpiang Chicken — This is another cheaper and healthier alternative to the pork lumpiang shanghai. It has not too much ingredients too. Here is the recipe.
5. Dynamite Lumpia — This is definitely not for the kids, but if your older kids have a penchant for something spicy the go ahead and make some. Bonus because it is cheap to make, that you will only need cheddar cheese, lumpia wrapper, and siling haba. This is also a super easy bar chow to make when surprise visitors come over. check out the recipe here.
Hope you’ll be able to try any of the above mentioned recipes. If you are on the look-out for more Lumpia recipes, why not check out this e-book on “Top 50 Most Delicious Spring Roll Recipes,” The kindle version is just less than P150.00 or 3USD. You may buy it here.

]]>Fried Rice is a happy food for us Pinoys. It is an economical meal because it allows us to recycle food — just be sure the rice was refrigerated to avoid food poisoning (see other food-poisoning prevention tips here), and at the same time it is quite cultural because we are really accustomed to eating it almost every morning.
It is also so yummy that sometimes in my family, we could eat it on its own sans ulam especially if i get carried away and put so much veggie/sausage/meat/fish on it.
I have compiled below some of my own fried rice recipes that are easy to cook, under a hundred pesos to prep, and will definitely be loved by the fam bam.
1. Pinoy Yang Chow — Super yummy to the taste. Not too difficult to prep. I make it on super busy days. Dash of olive oil in a pan plus a tablespoon or two of your fave butter or margarine. Saute minced garlic. Add cubed Chinese Chorizo (i buy the Fat and Thin brand over at Rustan’s Supermarket– 3 pieces for 75.00), two is enough for the recipe. Once the choriso is cooked slightly add in whatever frozen veggie you have in the ref. if its peas or carrots or both then go ahead. If you’ve go scallions then add in some chopped too. Saute a bit. Add in the day old rice. Season with salt and pepper. Crack two beaten eggs. Mix well in the rice mixture. Once egg is completely done and rice turned yellow add a dash of Knorr liquid seasoning and sesame oil.

2. Tuyo Fried Rice — i use bottled tuyo for this recipe but you can use your usual tuyo that you ca buy from the market. Saute onions and garlic in olive oil and a bit of butter. Add in half a bottle of tuyo flakes. Cook well. Add in one or two pieces of calamansi depending on the size. Add in the day old rice. Season with salt according to taste. This one doesn’t need much salt, obviously.
3. Japanese-Inspired Omelette Fried Rice — Saute onion, garlic and about 250 grams of lean ground pork. Add in the day old rice. Season with salt. Add in enough tomato ketchup to coat the rice. Set aside. In a separate non stick pan, pour two beaten eggs. Season with salt and pepper. Flip to cook thoroughly. Once done put the plain omelette in a shallow bowl. Transfer the rice mixture. Flip the bowl over in a big plate before serving.
Another favorite fried rice recipe of mine is the Aligue (Crab fat roe) fried rice but definitely it is not under a hundred pesos to make. But just in case you have left-over shrimps and a bottle of Aligue sauce lying around, try this recipe that i use and you will not definitely regret it (well except if your cholesterol is shooting up or you have allergies). Ill be making a follow up post on super yummy fried rice recipes soon.
So there you have it. Hope you could try one of the above-mentioned recipes. They really are easy to make and can be eaten any time of day.

]]>As most pastry chefs say, “life is short, eat dessert first,” and so we mommies, no matter how budget conscious we may want to be, have to set aside a little extra for an added sweetness in our life.
These are all easy to whip up and could serve a family of four. Here is the list:
1. Saba con Hielo – What could be more delicious than glazed or minatamis na overripe saba, with evaporated milk and shaved ice? Who could resist this? For an added oomph, why not add some sago balls. You can buy a piling of Saba for less than P40.00, half a kilo of brown sugar, a can of evap milk, and i am sure, you will even have some extras for meryenda. Here is an easy to follow recipe.
2. Mango Sago – When it is mango season, and you see a lot of overripe bananas in the supermarket, and even in streets, take advantage! Make a smoothie out of the mango, grab and boil some mini sago balls, and you’ve got yourself some Mango Sago! For those who want measurements and procedure, here’s a quick recipe to follow (you may want to omit the condensed milk since the mangoes are usually very sweet, just use evap or whatever milk that is available in your ref — but you can do away with the milk altogether).

3. Chocolate Clusters – You can buy those very affordable oishi-brand cereal that looks like coco crunch. Buy as well the plain chocolate bars over at the baking aisle of your favorite supermarket, and you’ve got yourself ingredients for chocolate clusters that your kids will surely love to make and eat! If you’ve got change for your P100.00, you can buy some colored sprinkles over at the ice cream section or still in the bakery aisle. Here is a recipe you may wanna follow.
4. Fiesta Ice Candy – Buy a small can of fruit cocktail, a small can of evap milk (or even fresh milk if that is what you have in the house), and presto! You’ve got yourself ingredients for your fiesta ice candy. Just add some sugar and ladle on your existing popsicle makers or ice candy plastic, and you’ve got yourself a healthy popsicle for the kids all under a hundred pesos. I am sure the kids will love helping you out too, and bonus points for another day’s supply of this yummy and cheap dessert!
5. Iced Coffee Jelly – Of course you would not want the kids to have this lest you will be chasing them all day! Anyway, head on over to your favorite supermarket, buy those unflavored gelatin, and two sachets of 2-in-1 black coffee mix (so that you do not have to add sugar). Make this into your gelatin mixture. Pour into a container, let it rest, and then refrigerate. Once the gelatin is set, cut into little squares. Make iced coffee out of three or four sachets of your favorite three-in-one coffee mix, get a shaker, and mix with cold water and ice cubes. In separate glasses, add the coffee jelly and pour in the three in one mixture and put in some ice cubes. Serve! For kids, you may want to substitute the coffee mix/flavor with any kool-aid or tang juice flavor (strawberry?), and then instead of unflavored gelatin, just get strawberry flavored gelatin instead! All under a hundred bucks. If you’ve got an extra change from the one hundred, why not buy those fat colorful straws?
